What she was getting from the "party performances" was laughter from a group of people...which is why comedians generally do what they do. They all want "the roll' where anything that they say is getting laughs because the audience is with them. It's an addiction that keeps them going, even through hard times. But being a fun party guest is no way build a career and is not a path to eventually get paid doing comedy, which was the problem.

I love that they got Jane Lynch to play Sophie, and essentially have her playing two different characters. I guess I agree with your reaction to Midge's behavior at the end, but I also feel that Midge's on-stage "outburst" was necessary and, in a way, triumphant. Kevin kept saying "This isn't the time or place for this," but in a way, it was exactly the right time and place. Yes, it could potentially harm her career, but it also showed that she had the freedom to call out the "phonies" in the world, and to point out that women don't need to change their behavior for men, or apologize for being their true selves. It's a challenge that all performers and artists face throughout their careers, balancing their authentic selves with their public persona, and weighing professional success against being true to themselves. Midge is finding her true voice; now she needs to figure out when and how and where to use it, and if she's willing to accept and/or suffer the consequences.
