Mad Men, Season 4, Episode 4

Comments

Chris

Slattery does a great job directing this episode. So many complicated scenes to stage from the opening phone call to beatnik party. Great visual jokes like the column in Pete’s office or Peggy peeking over the wall behind Don or Cooper on the couch eating out of focus — his only appearance in the episode.

Chris

Rumsen is a dinosaur but he was also the first to realize Peggy had potential and Faye also suggests a strategy that focuses on marriage so he’s not alone in thinking that. But he’s not a good fit for the new Sterling Cooper, or cutting edge work, no doubt.

So do you guys think Don should/will pursue Faye the market research psychologist? He needs therapy and won't admit it...that would be a surreptitious way to get it...

Actuarial Lurker

Superior writing by having the focus group be a public yet private shaming of Don for sleeping with Allison

Actuarial Lurker

I've seen people in business and college allow there staff/students to dictate what is in a recommendation as a favor so they know its what the person wants to emphasize...that said, you're right that Don is so shallow he doesn't know what to say other than she types well or something banal like that

The reappearance of Kenny spurs Pete to put the screw on his father-in-law when in Season 1 he initially did not want to take his money to get the apartment when his own father said no. So we see that Pete is more willing to do anything- even more than when he went to the American Airlines meeting with Duck and said his father was on the plane that crashed in Season 2

Great to see you conclude that this was a young versus old episode, with Don and Freddie out of step, Pete finding a path to adulthood with a child and being more cut throat now that he has to support a child, and Peggy hanging out with people her own age instead of dating Duck or trying to please her strict Catholic mother....Peggy is 25, Pete was 26 in Season 1/1960 so he has just turned 30 in 1964, Don is 39

Lucky Strike is $25 Million at the end of Season 3, Pete took about $10M in the "heist" episode hence the $69% when you add in growth and that they won Glowcoat, Sugarberry Ham and some other un-named clients. Upgrading Vicks from $2M to $6M gives then a cushion and makes Pete more important in the firm

As to your closing comments about Peggy- we see Pete being in the office with a support pillar to be next to Rogers and we see Peggy in an office next to Don peaking over the transom after Allison throws the desk contents at the wall- so that subtly reinforces the "mentor"/"mentee" relationship and also the severing of the potential Pete and Peggy issue if not already driven home by the pregnancy of Trudy

“The rejected”, I feel like it’s all about the women. This episode always makes me laugh out loud. “If it’s a boy, it’s $1,000, a girl, $500”, every time I hear that line, I want to punch the guy through the screen! 🤣 There are many things I want to say about the women in this episode, but I think I’m going to have to wait a few more weeks so I don’t spoil anything. 🤐 Alison: in the Christmas party episode we actually get to see how Don’s and Alison’s relationship was. They would flirt a little, like when she was reading that letter that Sally wrote, and then we get to see how he treated her after he slept with her, like when she asked about that picture of him and Anna, and he was really short with his answers. I mean I get why he wouldn’t elaborate, but he was rude. This is something that all women have to deal with, even right now in 2023! I would have felt awkward as hell, and I would have thrown the thing at him, not the wall. We did get that moment of Don knocking on his own office lol (Btw, Alison was the receptionist in the other company and was his secretary after Roger married Jane). Joyce (the girl from Life Magazine): Zosia Mamet is an excellent actress. LOVED her on Girls. Trudy: She finally got pregnant. Trudy is my favorite thing about Pete. When they act like a couple, they are a team, and I love it. Ms Blankenship, I mean he said to move the meeting and she did 🤣 The column in Pete’s office... is just comedic lol I have more comments about a lot more people but 🤐

Every time I see Ms. Blankenship all I hear is the Karate Kid :) Originally airing on August 15, 2010, 'The Rejected' is Episode 4 of Season 4 of Mad Men. It is the 43rd episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.2, placing it as the #12 ranked episode of this season and #19 out of all the episodes shown so far.

I know he directed Phillip Seymour Hoffman in one of his last performances. I'd love to see him do it more.

What's up with not showing parts of the frame in the background like you did before? Now if something happens with either playback it's next to impossible to resync the videos with each other without going back and starting the episode over from the start. If nothing else then add a clock to the frame so that we can see what point of the episode you are at.

If you can just add like a blurry image at least, that would work too. It's hard to sync without audio or something visual
