I'm Not the Person I Used to Be

The Greg decision was (and I mean, still is) very divisive amongst fans. I felt fairly weird about it in the beginning, but I do think Skylar Austin is very talented and Greg as a character is very important to the show. I think they did the best they could with what they had, interested to see what y'all think throughout the rest of the season!

Many things to say! First, I too am proud of all us Patreon fans for never spoiling a whisper of what would eventually happen with the return of Greg. Yay us!

Second, Santino returning was NEVER on the table once he left. This fourth CXG season exactly coincided with the rehearsals, tryouts, and Broadway opening of the musical TOOTSIE, for which he won the Tony Award. So there was honestly no way it was going to happen, and everybody knew it.

Third, I felt all along that Greg had to return. He had been absolutely central to the series for a third of its duration (as well as that important paternal connection in season 3), and it couldn't conclude properly without Greg being back on hand. That being so, I think they handled it BRILLIANTLY with the "totally different person" scenario (it's even the title of the episode!) and I was very pleased to see the role played by someone of the stature of Skylar Astin. (I also adore meta stuff, so that helps!!)

Skylar Astin is a musical and dramatic performer of some stature. He was in the original cast of Spring Awakening, was the male lead in the Pitch Perfect movies, and actually co-starred with Santino Fontana in a musical revival (you can buy the cast album! LOL). Before CXG he starred in a sitcom for 2 seasons (Ground Floor) in which his best friend was played by Rene Gube -- Father Brah. (The lead actress from that show is now Rene Gube's wife.) And Skylar Astin is currently the star of a very good NBC comedy-drama, So Help Me Todd.

PS: You can now better understand why I was so entertained, a couple weeks back, by you guys' analysis of why the series was getting rid of cast! Nope, they're all here until "the end of the series... of holidays." (Mrs. Chan, however, is out of the picture. This is the year she became a regular on the Magnum PI reboot, which is still going on.)

Oh man, have we all been waiting for this episode! I agree with DelGuy....the Greg return was initially weird, but then he grew on me. Santino wasn't coming back, but they needed Greg to come back in order to tie up Rebecca's story. The way they handled it was pretty good, I thought. Since the show is from Rebecca's perception, we're seeing Greg as a completely different person, the way she does. The final conversation about Marco really shows how much they've both changed. She owned up to something she did and simply apologized; he found out about something awful, and didn't punch a wall or get wasted. Also smart to almost immediately swing into a Rebecca/Greg song to help us get used to seeing them together again. Oh, also, "What You Missed While You Were Popular" is another one that gets stuck in my head all the time. It reminded me of something so I had to look it up: "Hollaback Girl". The choreography/set is essentially a direct homage to the Gwen Stefani music video. (Though, honestly, if I listen/watch Hollaback Girl now, it just makes me think of the catchier When You Were Popular.)

Speaking of surreal and meta, I would HIGHLY recommend Bojack Horseman on Netflix after CXG wraps up.

Wow, I can't believe all of that was going on behind the scenes. We absolutely loved Santino. When an actor makes a character iconic it's hard to separate them from the role, ironic that he left this to take on Tootsie lol. I'm sure Skyler Austin will bring his own spin to the character and it makes the anticipation for the rest of the season so much better! Once again thank all of you for not spoiling this amazing reveal! You're the absolute best!

I think once we finish this season, i'm gunna go back and watch all of the early Greg episodes just cause I miss him lol. Also comparing the two performances will be fun!

I'm someone who nuGreg never really grew on; I accept the necessity of him so I'm glad for him on that level, and it's absolutely not show-ruining but after some rewatches I realized that it did impact my feelings around the character going forward. Oh well, it is what it is. In the meantime I still respect the HELL out of how they played the recasting off here. They didn't just sneakily reference it, or even justify it... They made it a major character and thematic beat ! Like, I don't know how they'd have done Rebecca and Greg's reunion if Santino had been here but "we realize we're very different people from when we last interacted, let's start afresh" is both so generally relatable (something they could have come up with randomly) and also SO INCREDIBLY APT with the recasting... You'd almost believe that they recast Greg on purpose in order to make the reunion go that way and evoke those themes! You really can't hope for better, as far as papering over out-of-show constraints goes.

Exactly and he's back for 1 season and not even a full one! I don't mind it as much anymore but man I miss Santino.

Santiano is one of my favourite actors in CXG, and I was disappointed to see that he never came back after season 2. I also felt (initially) that Skylar is too sweet- and young-looking to play Greg. However, when I started to think about Greg's journey and real-life examples of people like him, I realized that having a slightly more "mellow"/sweeter version of Greg in S4 actually makes sense in the story. Having an addiction or any other issue can highlight some character traits that make a person seem more indifferent/snarky/unhinged/darker etc. than they actually are. Underneath all the darkness and desperation, you might have a very sweet, even sensitive person who just does not know how to handle their feelings in a healthy way. While S1-S2 Greg had its own charm (and was played by a wonderful actor), you could argue that S4 Greg is the actual Greg or the Greg that his friends knew before the addiction came along. After rewatching the show, I actually wish the show writers had more guts to make him even more different from the original Greg since that would make sense too. (I've met some people whose personality changed drastically after overcoming an addiction or mental health problems.) But that obviously would have been a risky thing to do and made some people hate the new Greg even more.

That's actually a really cool idea. Lean into the meta ness of it all, while having something really sincere to say.

I still prefer old Greg, but Greg "lite" works for me on a different level.
