So Joan COULD have been the one...will she be?...and you are right Greg is heading for Viet Nam- In Don's fur backstory where he tricks Roger int getting hired its 1955 and Roger is already having ab affair with Joan

Actuarial Lurker

The scene where ALL the women in the office give the side eye to Betty when she just lest Sally roam the Metro North commuter rail system and could have been abducted is the pinnacle of what they have been building up with with the writers trying to get us to dislike her- Sally is 10 in 1965

Actuarial Lurker

Classic noir with the death of Ms.Blankenship- ranks up with Guy being run over by the John Deere

Actuarial Lurker

And more of Pete being "progressive" and trying to get Filmore Auto Parts to employ Africa-Americans in the South and still not happening...its 1965 and the Edmund Pettis Bridge HAS happened a few months prior

Actuarial Lurker

The psychologist is Faye Miller- the actress Cara Buono, played the wife of Christopher Moltisanti in the last few episodes of the last season of the Sopranos. In the prior episode date when she was talking about Aesop and "bent" her nose when talking about her store-shop owner dad- it was to imply that her dad was low-level involved with the mob....and left it at that before teasing Don that he is also a 2-bit hustler like her Dad,

Actuarial Lurker

Classic tell- that Peggy would die to have run the Goldwater campaign- just for the money- so what is she doing with Abe

Actuarial Lurker

The issue with Betty was that the reason Sally even was able to sneak onto a busy commuter train is that Henry convinced Betty that Sally needed therapy and Betty couldn't even be bothered to take her to her sessions and sends Carla the housekeeper. We then earn that Carla is teaching Sally to cook breakfast which Betty "should" have done in that age and dumped that mother duty on her employee. Now Don basically does something similar multiple times- gets the nurse from down the hall to babysit on a custody night, has Faye take her home and try to "handle her" when they are not that stage in their relationship and she is basically a company contractor.

Wow you guys really don't like Betty . Look Betty is also changing just like everyone but she's going to take longer because she started really late( yes she is a horrible mother ). The focus of the episode was the way woman are treated just like the old lady said to Don when she took sally to the office "men never know what's going on " Look how Abe talk to Peggy and how Blankinship was treated in that office Joan with Roger ,Dr Fey being put in that scenario . In my eyes the point of the show is that these woman including Betty have a role in society and its pleasing and helping the men with there kids, there grieved, with there opinions. Its funny that you guys immediately disregard Bettys time as being less important than Don's because she's the mom and she's not doing anything and its her Job. Amazing episode and I can't believe that you guys missed the whole plot.

So… I dislike Faye sooooo much 😑 even though I like that she's a career woman, like me, I think it’s her performative Psychology. She lost me when, in the second episode when she appeared, she changed her outfit to appear more approachable and used “techniques” that she used to make the secretaries like her… also, she didn’t remember that Alison ran away crying from the meeting… 😡 So as a Don Draper relationship I give her a 2/10

Denisse Brito

I always wondered why she wasn't (I haven't finished the show so Idk if they address it lol)

I LOVE Stan, he’s funny in an annoying way lol I find it funny when he says "You can't even do what we do" and I think, "bro that's the point lol" I'm bi, so I get what both sexes bring to the party lol

Denisse Brito

I LOVE ABBE!! (Peggy’s date) He’s nerdy, awkward, and into politics… so my type 🤣 (I'm also the person who says the wrong things all the time lol) Also, I’m so excited that I get to nerd-out a little about the feminist movement 😍 The feminist movement started with the civil rights movement, but they split because of differences in ideologies… some of the comments are hard to read (because the reasons are so out of date), but that conflict left black women at odds… they were both “black” and “women,” and they still struggle in this society because of it.

I think Abbe was an awakening for her. The reason it doesn't really work is because she is still trying to be Don; Don would compromise his beliefs for money.

So my dad was basically a Don Draper. He cheated on my mother constantly. As a child, I wanted to spend more time with my father because he was never around, and my mother had to be the bad guy. I hate that I'm defending Betty... Ugh, but after years of having daddy issues (it was fun), I was able to see my father for what he was. Now I'm closer to my mother. What I'm trying to say is, I agree with Betty in this episode... Don is not a father, he takes the same responsibility with his kids as a "cool uncle". Kids need discipline, and responsibility, and consistency and Don is not it. He wouldn't be capable of being it.

Denisse Brito

I really really really don't like Betty, but she was right in this episode. Don does not know what it takes to raise children.

Quick thought: Have you noticed how Betty's fashion has changed from 1950's housewife when she was with Don to a politician's wife (More Jacky Kennedy) with Henry? It shows that she kind of changes as the needs of her husband change. Also guys, she has 2 other children and housework to do, she can't just drop everything to go get Sally. She was going to the city the next day, and Don is her absent ex. Being a stay-at-home mom is a job, a big one. Don't make me defend Betty, I don't like it lol.

The best writing is the slow burn - and I felt some flame in this one :) Originally airing on September 19, 2010, 'The Beautiful Girls' is Episode 9 of Season 4 of Mad Men. It is the 48th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.8, placing it as the #3 ranked episode of this season and #9 out of all the episodes shown so far.

No we get that Betty has to be the bad guy. From the perspective of the show it only shows her that way too, at least right now it does. We've defended her before but her actions in this episode truly rubbed me the wrong way.

I think the point of the writing with Don and Betty was that neither of them are being mature. The moment Betty answers the phone Don is criticising her (despite the idea of Sally walking to her appointment being reasonable), and rather than being the bigger person Betty buys into it and tries to get Don back. It's a childish dynamic

Actuarial Lurker

It dates back to just after the Civil War. When they passed the 13th, 14th and 15th Reconstruction Amendments women were pushing for voting rights THEN but male Black leaders like Frederick Douglass refused to join the proto-suffragettes out of fear that demanding women's rights would sabotage male Black rights as a "step too far". And of course White rich men loved seeing the two oppressed classes infighting so that they could slow down progress....

Make no mistake; Stan will be a favorite character come the end of the show.
