The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Season 2, Episode 10

All Alone

Jeff

This was such a great season finale, and leads into a totally unpredictable third season. This isn't a spoiler -- really -- but get ready for the first scene of the next episode: it's another very impressive one-shot. The Lenny Bruce scene was taken almost word for word from his actual appearance on the Steve Allen show. You can find it on Youtube: Lenny Bruce on the Steve Allen Show April 5, 1959. Kevin, your memory is remarkably accurate about the sitcom called "Empty Nest." It was a spinoff of "The Golden Girls" and it ran from 1988 to 1995. It was about a pediatrician, a neighbor of the Golden Girls, whose grown daughters come back to live with him. Isn't it amazing how much useless trivia is floating around in our brains? Joe, I just want you to know that I did appreciate your joke: Benjamin: "How do you stumble on the Big Bang Theory?" Joe: "TBS."

Luke Kirby's performance is even more impressive when you realize that the Steve Allen performance was recreated word-for-word, beat-for-beat, breath-for-breath from real life. The decision to put it in this episode - where it resonates with the Midge/Benjamin arc - was pure genius. As a matter of fact, all of Lenny's standup material in the show is at least partly adapted from real bits, as the writers thought it would be overly presumptuous to write new material for Lenny Bruce. However, this is one of the only instances where we have full video of the original performance, rather than just audio or transcripts. Also, regarding the baseball-hitting scene: the actors for Archie and Joel spent a lot of time rehearsing it so they could get all the hits for real (it was a oner, which added to the challenge). However, when it came time to actually shoot, they kept running into problems with the balls hitting the camera operators, so the decision was made to deliberately miss and CGI the balls in later. However, the actors found it difficult to deliberately miss after getting so into the rhythm of really hitting them, so the final scene actually has a mixture of real and fake hits.

Looking it up right now! Glad that you're confirming the GG spinoff. We were both curious! Also that's how I stumbled upon it lmao!

It was driving me crazy trying to figure out if it was real or CG. Thanks for sharing! I really couldn't tell.

Woah. Totally forgot about the amazing guest actors in this episode. The coolest Broadway connection is Katrina Lenk ( the fortune teller) who won a Tony in 2018 playing opposite Tony Shaloub who also won a Tony for the same show, The Band’s Visit. Also Christopher Fitzgerald (the jerk nightclub owner) has originated roles in « Wicked », « Waitress » and « Young Frankenstein ». He’s been Tony nominated three times. Andrew Keenan Bolger (the PA who is trying to kick Midge out of the studio) has been in countless Broadway shows since he was in the original cast of “Seussical” in 2000. There’s the wonderful inclusion of “Shall We Dance” from The King and I. Such a great finale!!

The Lenny movie is pretty good. Hoffman is superb, but Luke Kirby is working with a better script, frankly. The best take on Lenny is probably what they do with him on Maisel: indirect, mostly on the periphery, central only in contrast to someone else. Looking at Lenny Bruce’s life directly is very painful and not easy to do in a way that doesn’t feel either grim or exploitative. He’s like Marilyn Monroe or John Belushi that way. We don’t see a lot of onscreen depictions where he’s central because he’s so hard to capture and because no one wants to live through his ending again.

Such an amazing episode. I love hearing "This Will Be Our Year" by The Zombies at the end. Great to see you guys finally watch Luke's Emmy-winning performance! A lot has already been said here in the comments (all of the stand up is real Lenny's, Steve Allen performance is one of the few we have actual video of, etc.) Luke has said he listens to the recordings over and over to get it all down. Even the ums and ahs and snaps. I know the original Lenny version was linked but here's a side by side comparison of them. It's incredible to see the detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZKDaccsK-4. Also, yes, this is about his marriage troubles, but in real life he was already divorced in '57 and the show started in '58. In the show, he stops wearing his ring when we see him in 2x05. They've talked about how since this isn't a biopic, they don't really worry about his chronology too much. It's more about the character having his essence than it being the actual Lenny Bruce. Something I noticed is that you guys get pretty quiet during the Lenny scenes here. They're very different and introspective. Rachel has said they're some of her favorite scenes to shoot because he changes the pace of the show. It's so quick and frenetic, but when they see each other it slows down. Lenny really opens himself up to her here, and it sets a precedent for the rest of their interactions going forward. They're my favorite too and can't wait for you guys to see more of them! I guess I'm the resident Lenny fan here lol. Regarding the movie Lenny, it's definitely a lot darker than this show. I think it's a great Fosse directing feat and has beautiful b/w cinematography, but I shockingly don't like Hoffman or the film really. Like you guys said, some actors can't nail being a comedian on screen and I just didn't feel it with him. Valerie Perrine is great as his wife Honey though. Man, I've written a lot here lol but as I've said before, this is one of my favorite moments in the show. Season 3 is definitely a journey. Once again have an ep that I'm very excited for you guys to see!

you guys should defiantly check out the side by side comparison of lenny's act with lukes portrayal it shows just how well done the scene is and such a beautiful homage to the real lenny bruce, love watching the show along side you both, made me really appreciate the work that goes on behind it all :)

That's fair. There is a certain sadness to him that Kirby pulls off well. We still really wanna watch the movie.
