Here's a fun behind-the-scenes excerpt from the book "Madly Marvelous: The Costumes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" (2021) by Donna Zakowska, costume designer for the show: “From the early 1940s, and especially after World War II, USO shows – entertaining the troops – became a high-profile pursuit for entertainers of all stripes, including many comedians, not least because the pied piper of the USO was comedian Bob Hope. And in order to fill a very large airplane hangar in New Jersey for our USO reenactment without resorting to CGI, we costumed over a thousand extras in period uniforms, which, I was told, broke – or at least rivalled – a New York record for the largest number of extras on set for a single day of shooting. “A lot of khaki,” as Midge so aptly put it, and a daunting challenge for wardrobe. So, unable to build or find enough complete uniforms in the necessary time frame, we developed a system I liked to describe as resembling a Napoleonic battle formation, with the front lines perfectly costumed, successive lines less so – starting, of course, with shoes – until we reached the extras I called “shadow warriors,” the farthest from the camera, who were dressed in just essential pieces, sometimes only shirts or T-shirts – but always dyed to the perfect shade of khaki!”

Another fun bit of trivia: the scene at the USO show features a huge 49-star flag backdrop. The 49-star flag was flown for only one year, from July 4, 1959 until July 4, 1960, the time between Alaska achieving statehood and Hawaii achieving statehood. The episode takes place in December 1959, meaning the flag is historically accurate.

Finally, in regards to the dedication at the beginning: the episode was dedicated to Gary Stewart, a music producer on this show and the Palladinos' previous series Gilmore Girls. Producer Dan Palladino wrote: “We are deeply saddened by the death of our friend Gary Stewart. His generosity and enthusiasms were infectious. He was a tireless warrior for social causes and fought injustice every day of his life. He was a magic genie with a trunk full of CDs and a love of music that was unparalleled. He produced our Gilmore soundtrack with as much energy and devotion as if it was The White Album, and will continue to be an influence on the sounds of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He was the best of the best.”

The main cinematographer on the show is M. David Mullen who was the DP on 27 episodes including this one. He won the Emmy for cinematography for the season 2 premiere ep "Simone" and he won it again for season 3 for the fifth episode coming up (probably my favorite episode of the entire show!) There's a great video where he talks about shooting that USO oner but it includes talk of scenes from ep 5 so I'll wait to share it until then. He is an incredible wealth of knowledge. Once you finish the show you should dig into more of his interviews! When you guys said with the Shy tour you didn't know if we'd see Lenny I was saying "Just wait!" at the screen lol. Don't worry, he will still pop up. You have something great to look forward to again. The Lenny and Abe stuff in this episode is amazing and a nice way to push Abe toward where he wants to go. They're kind of a perfect duo. This is actually the first time in the show that Lenny's scenes aren't with Midge! It's pretty rare, so it's cool to see. I don't know if you guys saw Everything Everywhere All at Once but the actress playing Mei (the girl who confronts Joel at his club) is Stephanie Hsu who's the daughter in the movie. This was obviously a few years before that, but she's amazing and a great addition to the show. Regarding the Midge and Susie fight, I see why Midge is mad but she really just has to get over it in this case. It just seems shitty for her to try to take this opportunity away from Susie. She doesn't have to see Sophie! Anyway, see you next ep!

So happy Stephanie Hsu (Mei) is finally on the show! Before she became incredibly famous last year for her Academy Award nominated role in EEAAO, Stephanie got her start in theater and originated roles in two Broadway musicals. She’s incredible on screen, but if you ever get to see her live on stage, she has such great stage presence.

A quick thought on Joel - my take is that he was never mad about Midge being with Benjamin, he was upset she didn't tell him that Benjamin met Ethan. It's the co-parenting lack of communication and doesn't fall into hypocritical behavior as Midge did know about his secretary (once the kids were involved). Originally airing on December 6, 2019, 'Strike Up the Band' is Episode 1 of Season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It is the 19th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.4, placing it as the #5 ranked episode of this season and #11 out of all the episodes shown so far. Only 8 episodes this season.

I always thought Mrs. Moskowitz line was supposed to be racist too, also when Joel was annoyed that Moishe didn't mention the place was in Chinatown. I interpreted as them not thinking white people would want to go there

Okay, I thought she looked familiar. Such a great movie. Yeah I can't wait to get into the interviews with him.
