The idea of the season-ending cliffhanger began in force in March of 1980 when J.R. Ewing was shot on "Dallas." Television shows were usually in reruns all summer, so we all had to wait until September for the new season. The makers of "Dallas" brilliantly saw the benefits of marketing the whole "Who Shot J.R." craze, which became a global phenomenon. To frustrate viewers even more, a writer's strike delayed the new season, so it wasn't until November that we learned the identity of the shooter. (I won't spoil it for you; you might just watch it someday.) These days, that kind of cliffhanger seems to be less effective, and often, as you said, can be an insult to the viewers. I appreciate this season finale because it wraps up the current storyline, but also teases us for the next season.

Such a great way to wrap up a season, giving FX freedom to decide whether to continue or not. The Americans never had a huge audience at the time, but I think the suits at FX....just liked the show. When I said none of the characters are safe...it doesn't just mean dead....it also means some evolve in interesting and plausible ways. Claudia eh? :) One of the best changes was a forced temporary recasting (kinda) for S3, I think you'll love it too. Some people think that Season 2 is a bit bumpier, but I think it's more like the "difficult second album" symptom of an amazing band, I think it's excellent, and I hope you will too. I want to give a shout-out to my good friends Chip and Sara. They started their excellent Watching The Americans podcast from S2 onwards (after each episode). They fell in love with the show having binged S1 on a transatlantic flight. :D Over the rest of the show they were lucky enough to host a bunch of great guests, including (eventually) the Js themselves. WatchingTheAmericans.com + Oh, and the Colonel's quip about "another arms race...this time in space" is basically the premise of the awesome For All Mankind. 🙂

One example of the 'failed cliffhanger' was the presumed death of a major character in Game Of Thrones, which basically backfired, annoying a lot of the audience, instead of amping them up. It would have been much better to have simply teased possibilities for the following season - which is what the Js (Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields) did so well with the finale of S1.

Behind the washer was where Elizabeth was hiding some of her personal stuff - I believe in previous episodes we saw their hiding place was in the fuse box.....which is conspicuously middle frame over Paige's shoulder at the end, and in the final shot she turns around and stares in that direction. Originally airing on May 1, 2013, 'The Colonel' is Episode 13 of Season 1 of The Americans. The next episode aired 301 days later. It is the 13th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 9.0, placing it as the #1 ranked episode of this season and #1 out of all the episodes shown so far.
