The West Wing Special Episode

Hi gents - Sorkin left TWW after S4.

Jeff

Wow, I forgot how good this episode was, and like you, I feel it's even more powerful today after what we've all lived through. I have a friend who'd never seen "The West Wing" and started watching it, but refused to continue because it just reminded her of how much worse things have gotten. I understand her feelings, but I love the show so much, and it actually reminds me that people can be goodhearted and work to serve the country. Now you're heading into the final four episodes of the season, which do have a connecting narrative. While nothing can match the previous season finale ("Two Cathedrals"), these episodes delve into complex issues, and I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts. As usual, we'll see more amazing writing, acting, and directing.

They definitely had Republican fans, but the Bush administration HAAAATED them (shockingly no sense of humor) so their access changed immediately after W took office. They had more people from the W admin for the special but they apparently turning everything they said into a partisan campaign ad. I think Karl Rove is the only one who made it in, and believe they said out of 30 minutes that one sentence was all they could use for what they were trying to do.

I had been out on a couple of dates with a girl when we met up to watch the 2016 election results. So confident was I that Trump wouldn't win I made a joke that if he did win well we obviously should sleep together. Similarly assured that there was no risk of that happening she agreed. Let's just say that neither of us paid up as that would have probably been the most depressing time that happened in the history of the world. lol

This episode is also known as The West Wing Documentary Special and it received an Emmy. In wondering how this episode came into being, I am guessing ... I think the show was very popular in ratings and it was nominated for and winning all kinds of awards. I imagine people were saying, "Well yeah, it's good television, but how accurate is it?" This hour of television answers that question. Look at all the former White House occupants were willing to talk with us on camera! And also, I felt echoes of this special episode throughout the rest of the series. So it does serve a purpose in moving the narrative forward. The next few episodes are among my favorites. I struggle to watch just one of them ... it's a continuous arc.

Actually, I've never seen this episode, or knew that it existed. It was not shown in Hungarian TV where I first watched the show, and was not included in the Hungarian DVDs. I can understand why - Hungarian watchers would not know who these people are. But it was interesting to watch, and watching your reflections, comparisons with today. You know, people say, nostalgia has always been there. There are these fun memes about chisseled tablets from, I don't know, 500 BC, about how times change and things used to be better and more reliable in our fathers' time. So, I guess, it would be interesting to know, what people thought about then-current politics, maybe 50 years ago, and whether they thought how current government was worse then ever before, and not measuring up to the good old time...

I believe if we all watched TWW every night in lieu of cable news and scrolling on social media, we would be so much happier.
