Great meta- symbolism. Even if Ginsburg didn't want to see the pictures he pitches the stalker version of the fairy tale "she wants to get caught and in that moment he IS handsome" to the client and they love it....so he turns the horror into art. Yes he IS the sensitive artist on the show. You will get some backstory on Ginburg that will let you know why he is so horrified....later with Joan we see the reality of marrying that date rapist and she has the guts to tell him to just leave... so Joan is the splash of reality to Ginsburg's fantasy shoe sales ad

Your pre-show commentary focuses on whether Peggy is threatened by Ginsburg and we see the "unloading" on Dawn where she realizes that she is successful and has the guts to talk back to Roger and even want his watch. So she is realizing her worth....first addressed in the Suitcase episode when Anna dies- she finally is believing it about a year later

Actuarial Lurker

Great to see Greg try to be a "man" and Joan cut right to the the chase that she's glad the Army makes him feel like a man because she was tired of trying to make him feel like one- so Joan is finally realizing she shouldn't be the "mistress" in relationships so just as Peggy with Dawn she is really finally finding her own worth

Henry's mother is bitter- her husband is obviously dead since we never see him- she gains weight and tells Betty that she is at an age where as Henry's mother she no longer has to look good for a man but Betty is young and should take pills to lose weight to make Henry happy and get back into her fantastic wardrobe of clothes- rubbing in that Betty is shallow. Like the Stones' song "Mother's Little Helper" right after we see SCDP try to get the Stones to of a Heinz commercial, Henry's mother is drinking and on Seconal- a strong barbituate- and gives Sally the meds to drug her to escape from the horrors of the world. But also takes perverse pleaseure like her dad did in describing the serial killings and how he only stops because a man can't ejaculate that many times. She learned this dark view from her father who teaches her the world is cruel in the story about being abused by him as a lesson that the world sucks....and we see that she solves the problem by sleeping with a knife and focusing on the negative "Henry how can you live in that man's dirt?- you could have gotten way you want (sex) without marrying her"

We see Don's inner demons with the fever dream and that Peggy for being "progressive" (would still have "killed" to run the campaign for Goldwater in her first reaction to her "liberal" newspaper reporter boyfriend) and reveals that she has racial fears that Dawn will steal from her purse while still trying to be a mentor for another up and coming woman from an oppressed class (Recall she wanted to stay friend with Faye Miller in Season 4 to try to start female networking). Peggy thinks Filmore Auto should hire African Americans- so she is struggling with the changing times to where Roger calls her Trotsky for siding with the striking workers....so Peggy is in transition. We know where Roger is coming from with the Blackface at Kentucky Derby day and taking the jokes about needing to drop 2 nukes to get unconditional surrender when talking to the Honda execs last season....so Season 5 really is a weaving and synthesis building on the ideas floated in Season 4

This show really does highlight how generationally people are screwed up, she did take some kind of perverse pleasure in telling that story. I'm not even sure if she knows why. You're right it's her dad.

Right, it does feel like it's escalating each season. The purse scene is so interesting because it doesn't paint her as perfect. It's also slightly ambiguous. Sure the reason they had her look at her purse and the moment existed for exactly what you said. Don't most women take their purses with them when they have guests stay over? Regardless of who it is?

Another way to interpret Don's dream - he killed the temptation? This is only my second time thru Mad Men, I'm very much not remembering a lot of the details so this is just conjecture. :) Originally airing on April 8, 2012, 'Mystery Date' is Episode 4 of Season 5 of Mad Men. It is the 56th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 8.6, placing it as the #6 ranked episode of this season and #13 out of all the episodes shown so far.

He was trying to kill the temptation- the question is is he a "dry drunk" like someone in AA or other recovery who is "sober" for years but never put himself in a place to be tempted....

Meagan hits the nail right on the head when she highlights - more practically than Faye ever could have - that Don’s reckless “appetite” is a symptom of something that is beyond his unhappiness with Betty. Which of course we’ll see more of. For me, the fact that Meagan has since the beginning of their relationship had Don’s full trust indicates that he does indeed love her for somewhat the right reasons. Faye would solve him like a puzzle, but he shares his mind openly with Meagan.

That's fair. There is some compassion there but since it happened so fast and we know how he is, there's something about it that's hard to buy I guess. We're just waiting for it to blow up.

Don's rejection of the Cinderella idea and his hatred of Ginzburg's reversal recalls the very first episode of the series when he ridiculed the research about the "Death Wish" and cringes as Pete wrongheadedly pitches it to Lucky Strike. As the increasing violence of the Civil Rights struggle, the Vietnam War and sensational accounts of crime creep into the public consciousness, it's another sign that Pete Campbell was ahead of the times back in 1960, and Don is now falling behind. As recently as last season, Don recognizes almost immediately the significance of Ali knocking out Liston. Now, he is completely oblivious as everyone around him does nothing to hide their unseamly fascination with the Chicago killing spree, down to his own wife and daughter.

heheheheheh

I get goosebumps every time I watch the scene with Joan leaving Greg. It is such a shame Christina Hendricks isn't more recognized because her acting, from her face and her repressed rage and facial expression is just pure gold.
