Rumble on the Wonder Wheel

Weird Magic

I want to be clear before reading my next statement - I still love this show as a whole, this doesn't change the enjoyment as a whole of the entirety of the project. I hate the Wonder Wheel scene, possibly more than any other scene in any other show I've ever watched. In watching entertainment (TV and Movies especially) there are times when a certain modicum of "suspending reality" needs to happen in order to move the plot or make it dramatic etc. (insert dues ex machina here) I can't do it with this one, just can't. Was it shot great - yes. Was the dialogue entertaining - for the most part yes. But I just can't get past the enormities of unrealism with the plot and character decisions. Midge had no reason to engage this conversation at Coney Island - she came there for Ethan's fake birthday celebration. Why on earth did everyone take a different cage? Shirley and Rose were together? Moise was with sailors? Abe was with two kids? Midge was alone? Joel is with their son but not sitting on the same bench? Why would these characters choose to take the wheel basically alone? There is no way these conversations could be heard by everyone - that wheel was huge. The urgency Midge had to air all the dirty laundry to all of her family and all of the Wonder Wheel crowd is not there for the character. There is zero reason for this character to engage this conversation in this setting - and I just can't get past that for any part of this scene - which (unlike almost everything else they did with this show) completely ruined everything they tried to do. In my opinion, they producers/writers thought - we need something that looks pretty and is artistically gorgeous in the season opener and shoehorned this scene into the Wonder Wheel without regard for character reasoning. To me - this was Game of Thrones Season 8 bad. Other than that - solid episode despite it being the 2nd worst IMDB rated :) Originally airing on February 18, 2022, 'Rumble on the Wonder Wheel' is Episode 1 of Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. It is the 27th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.8, placing it as the #6 ranked episode of this season and #26 out of all the episodes shown so far.

It was off the air for 3 years, actually, not 2. COVID really held this show up. Speaking of which, I’ve always wondered if the Wonder Wheel scene was meant to be a parody of what a COVID-restricted version of this show could have looked like - it’s one of the classic Maisel family chaos scenes with five different conversations going on at once, but with everybody partitioned off into their own little box.

You know that is completely fair, it worked for me but I see your point. It was very stylized. It reminded me of when Midge tells her whole family that she is a comedian. I wonder if they were going for the same kinda thing.

I assumed they shot everyone separately for covid protocols, they probably filmed this in 2021. I don't know if it's actually the case but it was my first thought.

This is the last episode that I watched of this show so it's all mysterious to me from now on. I really liked Susie and her sister's scene and the Coney Island part of this episode. Still don't know what to think about it but I really hope the show doesn't dip in quality, the first 3 seasons are really great to me!

I know some people have their issues with this season (and 5) but personally I adore them. Sure there's elements that don't hit for me as much as they should but the same can be said for the earlier seasons too. I go back and watch episodes constantly and I would say both this and season 5 are actually my most rewatched of them all. Looking forward to seeing how you guys react to it all!

I forgot this is when Alfie (the magician) shows up! Played by amazing Broadway actor Gideon Glick. One of you, don’t remember which one, but one of you mentioned you saw Aaron Sorkin’s To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway. That means you probably saw Gideon playing Dill, a role that earned him the Tony nomination that year.

I forget where we left off, I think somewhere in S4. I don't think it will be an issue sticking with it this time around, partly because of this group, but mostly because [everybody's] headspace is very different from 2022.

I still have to remind myself every time that [Moishe] wiped out a cargo ship full of Argentinian mobsters, alongside Dean Keaton.

Frank's Red Hot Sauce? Really? Frank's? No. Cholula or go home. Maybe... maybe Valentina.

I'm glad we are all watching this together now. The first 3 seasons were magnificent and if it does dip in quality, we will for sure be the first to point it out!

Youtalkingtome

Glad to hear someone praise them! We will always give honest reactions, so if something doesn't work for us we will say it!

This episode went down better for me than it did when I first watched it. It had been a little over two years since s3 and Amazon decided to switch to two eps per week so we only got 1 & 2 initially. After waiting so long, I found this premiere to be unimpressive and I agree with what someone else said—that wonder wheel scene is a bit torturous. I still don’t love the ep, but again, it’s going down better in hindsight. It’s interesting to see how you guys react and interpret some of Midge’s actions and choices in the ep. Can’t wait to go on this season journey with you to see where you land in the end.

Youtalkingtome

We can't either! We didn't mind it. Maybe because we didn't have to wait as long as everyone else? Maybe it's recency bias. We enjoyed this one!

Taylor

I definitely think you guys have the advantage of watching all of the seasons at once! It’s cool to see how that changes things.

Taylor

Gideon will also have a role in the Palladinos new show with Luke Kirby!

Aaron

That’s awesome! I haven’t heard about it yet, I’ll check that out today.
