I loved this episode, edgy and hilarious.

The ability to write material so close to being offensive while really not being offensive (and still being funny and not just another Fox News show - well, back in the 2000s when they tried to pretend) is where the talent is in comedy. So many people do the "you could never joke today like they could with (All in the Family, Blazing Saddles, MASH, etc) today and get away with it!" Yeah, you can, you just have to do it in a FUNNY way and not a PUNCHING DOWN wat. Not that comedy has to be like that, but so many people go straight to offensive topics for the shock value (it's at least some kind of reaction) without focusing on making something funny. I like to write jokes that touch on sensitive topics but are ultimately not really about that topic. If I can't do that then it wasn't that good of a joke anyway and not worth offending people. Same thing applies to swearing in most cases, if it doesn't work without swearing it wasn't that funny anyway. Great stuff as always, looking forward to more of this and The Goldbergs now!

Hey thanks for being so insightful and thank you for being here! I agree with everything you just said. Comedy is exciting and it should be. Mark my words, very soon somebody is gunna nail it and it's gunna be glorious.

state and main. is the mamet movie you're talking about in the intro. the main things i remember from that movie are 1. never trust a man who wears a bowtie (something like the point of a crevat is to emphasize the wearer's genitals and what kind of maniac wants to emphasize his ears), and 2. you can give your assistant an associate producer credit instead of a raise.

One of the things that inspired this episode was an article that claimed Tina Fey always had to be the smartest person in the room. So she wrote a character who was smarter than Liz.
