What We Owe to Each Other

Interesting about the point system. Based on the little we have seen, it seems to me, the system cares about objective value of actions more than your subjective perception. It does not seem to be interested as much about whether you are selfless or what's in your head. You save a baby, +50 points. You raise 50,000 in funds for cancer research, +10 points. Not sure about this perception, though. But this may be one explanation for Tahani: the system might not care that seriously about motives, or how you do things, just about what you do. (I've watched this show throughout, and I obviously remember most of the important plot twists and story elements, but probably forgot about a lot of the details. So, it's fun to speculate about something I could remember, but luckily don't!)

It is so. much. fun. to watch you guys and hear you discuss and theorize. Nothing else can really be said, for now, except it's a great ride and I think you're going to continue to really enjoy the show as it grows.

In response to a question on Reddit ("Do Professors of Philosophy enjoy The Good Place?) there's this non-spoilery answer which is timely for this particular episode. :) > I've only seen philosophers express positive opinions about the show but there's hardly a survey of philosophers out there about it. The show references Scanlon's What We Owe Each Other, which is pretty awesome. The show briefly schemes out an intro to ethics in the first season which isn't unlike what you might find in a class - that is, describing the differences between virtue ethics, utilitarianism, and deontology/Kantianism. There are some philosophy tidbits that are thrown out on occasion, usually via Chidi, the philosophy professor, but thankfully the show doesn't spend a lot of time lecturing on philosophy or advancing some view, instead just being an entertaining show which plays with philosophical ideas within its unfolding premise. <

next episode is one of the very best!! Also, your theorizing is hilarious and occasionally prescient. I'm so excited to see what you think of the latter portion of this season.

I can't wait to see the next episode. They reveal so much in each episode and it makes each week a real treat.

Fun context - this episode we get reference to Scanlon's What We Owe To Each Other and that was one of Mike Shur's big inspirations for the show! I was really excited when you picked this show to fill your time after you finished Crazy Ex Girlfriend, because I think both shows are clever in similar ways. They're both nuanced and the humor is often situationally based, and they unfold the story in a way that makes for both great first watches and fantastic rewatches because you want to go back and look for the things you might have missed.

One of your (J&K) discussion points is peripherally a major story arc for Season 3. 🙂

Yes! Watch Good Omens!

Hopping aboard this series. I watched this a little while ago and it's pretty good. S2 is my personal favorite, I also think this season gets really good with the next episode. Can't wait.

that was just what I was thinking. I kept thinking that I cannot even comment on their theories without spoilers :D it's so difficult being the audience of these reactions - we should make a viewers club where we discuss the guys' reaction without them seeing our discussions and being spoiled :D

they are very similar, indeed, without having pretty much anything in common. it is so weird. maybe because the protagonist in both is a misguided woman who starts becoming a better person? don't know. what I will say, however, is that I immediately fell in love with Elenor after not liking Rebecca for the best part of 4 seasons :D

on the question of where it was shot: I recently visited Universal Studios and actually saw the fountain from the show live on the set there! So at least part of it was shot there. apparently it is a very popular set and easy to re-dress for different shows and styles. As I said in other comments, I am finding it very hard to comment without spoiling anything. So much happens in this show and so quickly, that it becomes very tricky for us as your viewers. I wish you were noting down your guesses, though, so you can look back at them later and see how they compare to the actual plot. Maybe worth keeping an eye on that. It might be that some of your early guesses become reality in later seasons? For example, you keep saying "We should definitely see this person at some point!" - maybe we will? Blind Wave have the habit of taking notes from the shows they are watching (they are the definition of professional reactors, so they put way more effort into it than is required of any hobbyist for sure!), and they would sometimes pull out their early notes and see that they called a major plot twist very early. it's fun (for me, at least) :D

You're right! We were just kinda spit ballin ideas trying to figure out where the story is headed. We forgot that he already covered that.
