How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?

Comments

Aaron

It's been a tough day for me, then I got the notification for you guys watching this and it really made me so happy! I've been waiting forever to see how you react to the ending.

Aaron

I will NEVER understand how Luke Kirby wasn't nominated and didn't win for this episode. That scene just gets me every time, what an absolute masterclass in acting from Luke Kirby. I think people look down on this season because it's not upward movement for Midge. But it's such a genuine human experience; everybody is guilty of self-sabotage to an extent. I think standing on that stage at Carnegie coupled with Lenny's words is definitely her "Oh, f#*%&" moment. I hope you guys love the final season; they make a lot of artistic choices that are different from the other seasons, but I personally love everything about the last season.

Wow! A Maisel on Friday, then another in a couple of days? You spoil us. This was such an amazing episode with great performances, especially Luke Kirby. I'm really curious to see how you do with the final season. It's different, but I loved it, especially how it leads up to the conclusion of the series. I never in my life thought I'd hear a comparison between "Mrs. Maisel" and "The Matrix", but Kevin pulled it off. Bravo. By the way, when you watch "Derry Girls" I highly recommend using captions; those accents can be challenging. And you might want to read up on "The Troubles" in Ireland, especially during the 90s, if you're not already familiar with some of the history. Looking forward to your reactions!

Such an incredible episode. Sadly Luke Kirby wasn't even nominated for it because he was in more than half of the episodes this season and had to submit in supporting actor not guest. Factor in a busy field (Ted Lasso, Abbott Elementary, Barry, Hacks), Tony being their usual nom there, and Maisel coming back after a long break + seeing a downturn in nominations, he didn't get in. One of the worst snubs ever to me. Interesting how you reacted to Midge and Lenny getting together. To me, I think their relationship would've rang false if it DIDN'T happen eventually. I don't think the gut punch at the end would've hit as hard if they didn't have that added layer to their dynamic. I never saw it as something transactional. Lenny stuck his neck out for her and told her about Tony Bennett before her ending up at his hotel room was even an idea. Lenny really cares for her and loves her. I hope your mind was potentially changed after the end. What a brilliant way to flip romance on its head to have a "you will break my heart" line be about her wasting her talent and not their relationship per say. And on a more superficial level, they just have crazy incredible chemistry and I'm glad it wasn't squandered. They did film at Carnegie Hall and were really only able to because everything was shut down during COVID. They had about 400 extras and they tiled the audience to fill it all up. They actually filmed a lot of standup for this so we didn't see everything they did. I think they said Luke did about 5 1/2 pages of dialogue there. Also to go from "Are women more important than God?" to "You are more important than God." "You paid attention." "To you? Always." All time moment lol. Lenny really reveres her and in the end, he is the one person who can get through to her when, like you said, people like Susie and Joel been trying and failing to do so.

Taylor

Also a great quote from Amy on the Midge/Lenny romance: "To take them dramatically to the most connected, intimate place when you know you’re going to blow them up…it felt like, unless you really went for that, the blow-up just wasn’t really going to be as effective. We needed to really take them to the place where they’ve been leading up to this for so long. Now they’ve connected on that level and they’ve had sex and they’ve acknowledged everything that they can possibly acknowledge about each other. And then the reality… He saw her potential. He saw what she was. He was her guardian angel and her muse in a sense. The fact that then that’s the person who turns back on her to say, 'You are blowing it,'…it was dramatically the perfect storm of events to happen to her. It doesn’t matter that he had sex with her a night before, he’s still going to turn around and say to her, 'You are fucking blowing this.' That is what their relationship was based on, and it’s why we love them together because he is that person to her.

Fun fact - because COVID had everything shut down, they were able to just go ahead and shoot the Carnegie Hall scenes in Carnegie Hall, which is normally difficult or impossible to book for filming. The Carnegie Hall show, as you surmised, was a real show. They moved it back from February 1961 in real life to November 1960 in the show, so that it would coincide with the Kennedy-Nixon election. However, they kept the real life detail of a massive blizzard happening around the time of the performance, and even made it a major plot point. The opening and closing of the set were recreated beat-for-beat from the real thing, while the middle bits were taken from other sets he did at different times. This was done in part because they had already used up a lot of the best Carnegie Hall material in Lenny scenes earlier in the show. The Lenny stuff is my favorite thread in the show, so of course the episode that pays off everything they had been building with them for four seasons instantly became my favorite episode of the show. What a phenomenal way to pull Midge out of her (narratively frustrating) season-long rut. I also love the way his rant to Midge gets into a bit of a meta-commentary on his future with the whole “I’m not the standup messiah” bit - it feels a bit like Lenny challenging the popular version of his legacy, as touted by comics like Carlin. Just because it’s compelling to retrospectively view Lenny as a heroic martyr for free speech does not mean that he viewed himself that way.

Yeah no idea what Derry Girls is about! Captions are a great idea. Luke Kirby is just something else man.

God that's so tragic. I am mixed on it. The will they, won't they was juggled so well. I still think one of the most intimate and sexiest things I've ever seen, was the episode between them in season 3. It didn't end in sex but it didn't need to. I am fine with it and it was going to happen eventually.

Youtalkingtome

He was a complicated guy and I love how this show is a real tribute to him. He's not the star but he is in fact this specter that hangs over it all. Just phenomenal stuff.

Taylor

I think what makes it work is that it’s immediately cut by her finding the drugs and then their fight at the end. Often times in these will they won’t they situations you don’t want to break the tension but here the tension is put right back into the relationship. Obviously I’m biased here though because this is my favorite relationship on the show lol.

Taylor

It’s crazy that what they added to the set almost weirdly lines up with Midge. Divorced woman with a kid, hanging out with them after work, being at a motel at 4 in the morning, the sister joke lol.

Loved your reaction as always! I, like you guys, liked this season. I get the frustration with it but alas that was the goal and I never really understood the hatred for this season honestly. Now as you move forward to season 5, there's some interesting things to keep in mind: First, there was supposed to be 6 seasons and they had the story planned out to fit that. Therefore, unfortunately, A LOT of side plots and storylines are gonna get cut short to zero in on Midge's main storyline. Extremely, extremely unfortunate and it's smth you will absolutely notice. I would love to see their original plan, tho I think they have released some info on what was supposed to happen. Second, I wasn't really in fandom spaces for much of s4. However, I was for season 5. A lot of people really disliked it (it was very harsh) until a certain point which clarifies things. People were very quick to judge, altho now that the season is over, it's becomed liked for the most part (from what I've seen). Honestly, you'll see why because they go in a different direction that most don't expect. I'll be honest, I always enjoyed it and was highly anticipating each episode as they were released. And if there were aspects that I didn't like, I had faith the creators would sort them out. Overall, I really enjoyed it. I actually think it's a good thing some stuff was left up to audience interpretation because... well obviously they can't make everyone happy with the final so some vagueness was needed. Third, I really like your inputs on the character flaws everyone has, even if I don't always agree. Some people are really hard on particular characters (especially Midge), and I like that your more fair. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on the situations of s5. It prob gonna go in a different direction than you expected. I really hope you guys enjoy it! Even though it might not turn out how you expect!

I think I disagree with you guys about Rose. Yes, her dynamic with Midge is frustrating, but going from blaming Midge for not being able to take her extended family's misogynism anymore to fully owning being a female businessperson is a major upward development.

b

That part of the raid where someone yells, "I've got the books!" and Boise says "Both sets?" really got me 😂

Youtalkingtome

I wish we would have gotten 6 seasons. We love how complex all of these characters are. It makes for a far more interesting show. Everyone keeps telling us how season 5 goes in a completely new direction and I can't wait to see what that is.

Youtalkingtome

It is and we aren't alone in our disdain for her character. We really like Rose as a character and have been in her corner since the first season. We just don't love how she has been since season 3 really.

If you are interested, Gary Oldman is in Slow Horses on AppleTV right now. Awesome show you should definitely check it out. He is brilliant in it.

I sent J&K the following by DM: + Hi both, Jeff made the great suggestion that you guys do a little homework on Northern Ireland / The Troubles before watching Derry Girls. I found what I think is quite a good primer to the overall sense of community relations, right up to the present day...where the "peace walls" are still in place between neighbouring communities. Possibly the closest analogies for the USA are the Civil Rights / Race Relations (1960s onwards), plus maybe what life was like for border communities in the aftermath of the Civil War. It permeated every aspect of life, even if the majority of people just wanted to get on with life. Derry isn't Belfast, but it is in Northern Ireland, and was similarly fraught with sectarian divides. Case in point, even the name of the city was (is?) disputed, with BBC having strict rules on how often it should use the name Derry, or its original(?) name Londonderry, during news reports. It sounds funny...and it kinda is...while simultaneously being deadly (literally) serious. I have no doubt that Derry Girls will touch on this stuff a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAAmf6eTReQ

Jeff

That's an excellent video! Thanks for that. I hope Joe and Kevin have time to watch it.

Youtalkingtome

I've heard of it but I've never given it a shot. I do have AppleTV and I've almost started it several times. I'll take your recommendation
