I don’t know that Josh Molina is a top fan favourite, he’s not one of mine anyway, but it’s one of those situations typical of The West Wing where everything is extremely good. You can’t find a bad episode, you can’t find a bad character (except maybe Mandy), and you can’t find a bad actor. Josh Molina playing Will Bailey is fantastic, really exceptional, just like every other actor and character in this show.

My memory of Josh Molina is of him being a bit of a hate figure. I like him and his character, but a fair few people really didn't - at least relatively speaking - back when the show was airing. There's at least one occasion where the show itself directly makes a reference to that by-proxy.

When I first watched The West Wing, I had such a crush on Josh Malina. I met him years later and I think you can tell in the picture that I'm about to pass out as all of my teenage dreams came true! LOL He and Sorkin have been friends for years, so he's definitely one of the "Mighty Sorkin Players." I always think he's very good, particularly in Sports Night.

Jack

That’s my recollection as well, and was my attitude at the time, but I’ve warmed up to him a lot since then.

Fun watching the guys guess about how the show will end but we're only halfway there :)

We only got a glimpse in the Season 2 flashbacks as to what kind of senator John Hoynes was. I often miss VP Harris in the Senate. She used to get into some great verbal scrapes in committee hearings and really took people to task. I miss that.

Jeff

I love hearing your predictions about Hoynes and the next presidential race. I think you'll enjoy where the series ends up. So much good writing and acting ahead, especially in the rest of this season.

Weird Magic

I think his work with the West Wing Weekly helped bring a new perspective to Josh and his contributions to the show during and now after

For the record and those that don't/didn't know - Dr. Samuel Mudd was convicted by a military commission of "aiding and conspiring" in a murder for setting John Wilkes Booth's leg (but more realistically because there was a connection between him and Booth prior to the assassination). He was one vote shy of receiving the death penalty, instead getting life imprisonment, with President Andrew Johnson pardoning him in 1869. As for the entire episode - to me if this was after Sorkin left all the Sorkin supporters would be complaining about how boring it was, but since Sorkin wrote it we probably won't hear that :). The casual misogyny regarding being able to "pat your behind" to C.J. and telling Mrs. Bartlet to go back to her sewing group don't age well. As such I do agree with the overall ranking of this episode within the pantheon of the entire West Wing universe. Originally airing on November 20, 2002, 'Swiss Diplomacy' is Episode 9 of Season 4 of The West Wing. It is the 75th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.6, placing it as the #21 ranked episode of this season and #74 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, the misogyny was definitely there. I thought it was still a really good episode and had some interesting ideas.

I guess time will tell. When Sam is actually gone, maybe he won't be able to fill that same void. We'll see!

Alex Lee

The actor you recognised, who was talking to Josh, was the Captain in Dexter, if you watched that.

Youtalkingtome

Don't remember him from that. It's been so long! The John Lithgow season is the one that stands out to me

Does “the full catalog of Schitt’s Creek” mean that you guys won’t be able to watch the documentary on the channel?

Weird Magic

I think - immediately at the time - he defended his writing but has since changed his tune and has gotten much better. And to be fair - I don't think realizing this was misogyny started becoming mainstream until the 2010's (by men).

Malina's "bio" on Twitter has long been, "Hi. I ruined The West Wing."

I often bring up the First Lady's point about setting the leg. In medicine you truly don't get to choose who your patient is. Dr. Mudd literally got a congressional hearing on account of treason. And then got his name turned into a saying we all know. His name was Mudd. He saved the guy who shot Lincoln. Because he was a doctor and saw a patient. The reason we talk about it? It's because this has been around since the Greeks. There's a reason they call it the Hippocratic Oath. And every doctor to this day takes it. You set the leg. No matter who it is. A Big Red Cross....right on that plane.
