Mikey, are you a visual learner? I wondered based on you liking to see the maps and what you said about enjoying LOTR more when it had subtitles. I can relate!! When I started watching GOT I needed to look up some things to wrap my head around the geographical and social context. I think you're picking up on the important stuff. One thing to keep in mind when watching this is that people's identities are strongly tied to their family of origin (their "House") and where they come from geographically. That can help to compartmentalize what's happening in the plot. Here's some nonspoilery context!! They're on a continent called Westeros. (Except for the Daenerys Targaryan storyline -- she and the Dothraki are on the continent of Essos.) The king who holds the Iron Throne (Robert Baratheon) rules Westeros. There are various territories or realms in Westeros which a long time ago were independent kingdoms (which is why you'll hear it referred to as "seven kingdoms") but were ultimately united under one person's rule. All over Westeros there are noble families such as the Starks, Lannisters, and Baratheons. They each control a particular territory but are still ruled by the king. So you'll hear them referred to as lords and ladies. Each house has a sigil (emblem). The Starks are direwolves, Baratheons are stags, Lannisters are lions, Targaryens are dragons. Queen Cersei's maiden name is Lannister. Catelyn Stark's maiden name is Tully (their sigil is a fish). Jon Snow's last name is Snow because noble-born bastards are given customary surnames specific to their region. So bastards in the north are called "Snow." In other places their last names might be Sand, Rivers, etc. The Starks are in Winterfell, which is in the north region of Westeros, about as far north as you can go before you get to the Wall (which you'll learn about). When you hear Ned Stark is warden of the north, that means he's responsible for the governance of that territory and the welfare of its inhabitants. Daenerys Targaryen and her creepy brother Viserys are the remaining living children of the former king, who was overthrown by Robert years before. When you hear people refer to "the Mad King," they're talking about Daenerys's father. So Daenerys and her brother are in exile in Essos but wanting to reclaim the throne in Westeros. The Dothraki are comprised of independent, nomadic tribes (called khalasars). Each tribe is headed by a warlord called a "khal." So Drogo is a khal, and Daenerys being his wife makes her the khaleesi (feminine form of the khal's title). Genuinely, I think you will enjoy the map. 🤣

LET'S GO!!! A notebook might help with all the different characters and families or "Houses" The sigils might help too. The Stark sigil = Direwolf; Lannister = Lion; Baratheon = Stag; Targaryen = Dragon. Sometimes a character will refer to themselves as a dragon or a lion etc. based on their sigil. Also, the opening map sequence changes and follows the characters as they move around this world, some places will get added if a character is there and places are removed from the opening when the characters leave. Cassie with Popcorn in Bed is just finishing the series, she only has a few episodes left and she has loved the show.

Hi Mikey and Sean, by the end of the episode, it seemed like you were piecing together what you have been shown. Here is some information for context. "The Wall" that you kept hearing was that giant ice wall from the beginning of the episode when those 3 men came ouf of the tunnel into nothing but snow. "Widlings" are the people who live North of the wall (where that one guy saw the things with blue eyes - White Walkers) King Robert is the current king, but he took the thrown from the previous king during a rebellion who was a Targaryen and the father of the two very blonde brother and sister. Those last Targaryens were forced to flee to another continent across the sea when they were young. The brother sold his sister to Khal Drogo (Momoa) in exchange for an army to take the throne back because he is the son of the last king and believes he should be king. The beatiful young blonde sister is named Daenerys (Dan-air-is) and now that she is married to Momoa, she is the Queen of their people, the dothraki. Khaleesi means queen while Khal means King of the dothraki. People often call her "Khaleesi" rather than her name. Now, King Robert, who asked Ned to be his hand (the king’s highest-ranking advisor and essentially the second most powerful person in the realm) wants to kill the Targaryens because he believes another one of them killed the woman he loves (Ned's sister) "Ned" is short for Lord Eddard Stark and he is has been The Warden of the North which is a powerful military title given by the Throne to the noble house trusted to defend and govern the North region of Westeros (the country where WinterFell and Kings Landing is.) The Warden's duties are to protect the region, keep order and act as the crowns representative. There is also a Warden of the East, West and South of te Country. Each of the Stark children got one of the direwolf pups because that is their House sigil (think of a family crest) when they found one more pup, that went to Jon Snow who is a bastard and not able to take the Stark name. All bastards in the North of the country are named Snow, that is how people know who is a bastard. In other parts of the country they are called Rivers, Sand, Waters, Storm. I hope this helped clarify some of your questions.

There are excellent videos the show made, 1 for each season (maybe originally per episode?) describing the history and lore of the world. It's perfectly safe to watch season 1's lore now, and would make another cool Patreon video (about 1 hour 15 minutes). Thing to keep in mind is these are read by the actors in character, so each one will be describing events from their own perspective and bias, some of which will be recalling the same event a bit differently. It is a lot of info, so more to store in your brain. Or just learn as you go along. Cool thing about the opening credits... they change from episode to episode and the locations shown on the map show the key locations where that particular episode will be set. Also, if you look at the astrolabe (shit you not on the name) up in the "sky", it tells the story of Robert's rebellion. The Baratheons (stag) were joined by the Starks (dire wolves) and Lannisters (lions) to overthrow the Targaryens (dragon). In the end, the other animals all bow to the stag.
