They were going to go out, but as soon as Beth and her mom saw that her match was with Borgov the next morning, she suggested eating in the room because she knew Beth would need the study time. She encourages Beth to relax when she needs it since she’s an intuitive player , which was why she switched tactics when she finished her match with the 13 year old and won. The day before she got too into her own head and the match went on for 5 hours, the next day she decided to not think so hard; taking breaks, walking away, then playing what felt right in the moment and quickly before she could psych herself out. This time, her mom was able to read Beth and know that what Beth needed was to lock in since this was such an important game. As frivolous as her mom can be at times, she DOES care for Beth and understands her. So she suggests taking dinner up in the room so Beth could focus. I really love their relationship. They have this balance of being mother-daughter but also being friends.

when she walks away during the chess match with the lil dude, i think she's taking her mom's advice and doing the intuitive thing. instead of sitting there obsessing over whatever move he makes, she just walks up to glance at the board and follows her intuition on her next move
