When they say "the depression" they don't mean the actual, historical, Great Depression of the 30's. They're referring to a period of severe depression in fictional Gotham's history, which was at some point before or during Bruce's early childhood.

Re: Gotham, Gotham is a monicker for New York City in real life. Main line DC heroes tend to live in fake analogues of real cities (Gotham, Metropolis, Central city, etc). I’ve heard someone say that Gotham is New York after dark; Metropolis (Superman) is New York during the day.

Cast iron is elite. And you heat it to the smoke point BEFORE you add butter. Also, you only cook the egg until the edges are crispy if you're a Slytherin and your cast iron skillet is a horcrux.

so Gotham City is a fictional city in the DC Universe. It's across the bay from Metropolis (Superman's city), and it's kind of like the New Jersey to New York, but both are much bigger than their real life counter parts. The Narrows is an island burough like Manhatten, but it's the opposite in terms of class and crime - the most dangerous burough. Looking forward to next week, if you can guess the joker actor without looking it up I'm sending you guys candy bars

Glad you guys enjoyed Batman! he's my favorite comic. mostly because most (not all, but most) of Batman's villains have mental issues and Arkham Asylum is where they go instead of regular jail. Crane(Scarecrow) deals with phobias. Joker is a psychopath, some have other issues like OCD, delusions of grandeur, anger management, addiction, etc etc. where as with Superman, his villains are pretty straight forward bad guys. villains for villain sake. "The Narrows" is just Gotham's version of a ghetto or slum. where poor ppl live. also where the asylum is located. all the dirty and shady stuff that happens happens in the Narrows cause you can get away with crime where cops and nice ppl don't want to go and the city has "forgotten" it. Gotham is modeled off a gothic version of New York.

Its New York and other cities like Chicago as a catch all idea of a Mega-American city associated with organised crime and corruption. The main idea of Gotham City alone is so that the creators could have a catch all comparison between multiple locations where organised crime and socio-economic tensions were prevalent. Gotham City probably favours New York City more than other candidate for inspiration, however you can not dismiss places like Chicago where figures like Al Capone dominated the city in a manner that would give New York a run for its money as being a centre for the criminal underworld to thrive.

Hans Zimmer is not my favorite composer, but I found his description of the Batman theme really interesting. His idea was that Batman never becomes a true superhero like Superman, so he never has a full superhero theme, just those 2 notes. The harmony moving around the theme does most of the heavy lifting. The Dark Knight music gets even better. James Newton Howard collaborated with Zimmer on these first 2 Nolan batman's (along with Zimmer's army of assistants), but they are some of my favorite works from him. You guys will love the next one if you haven't seen it before. The 3rd one is pretty great too.

Specifically caused by the League of Shadows during the time that Bruce Wayne's father was giving out all that money and inspiring the rich in Gotham to collectively save the economy from the League of Shadows' tampering to destroy Gotham economically and watch it tear itself apart. Bruce's dad saved Gotham from Ras al Ghoul and the League of Shadows, this is huge for Bruce because Ras al Ghoul said Bruce's father was a coward, when in fact he was a savior even before Bruce had become one as Batman.

And the reason they don't just use "New York" or other cities is so that they have creative freedom to make different institutions, history, mess with layout, names, and locations. It's loosely based off it, our mind makes connections, but the writers have full creative freedom still. I do the same thing in my writing.

Regarding Rachel and Bruce romance: Rachel loves Bruce, and vice versa. However, she sees at the end that Bruce is Batman more than he's Bruce right now... and right now, Gotham needs Batman more than Bruce. Someday, it won't. Someday she has faith that Batman will clean up the streets (he's proven himself to her with saving all of Gotham against the League of Shadows and Ras al Ghoul) that Gotham can be saved, and when that day comes, they'll settle down together without Batman... without the cowl.

Haven't seen this since it came out. I forgot how really beautifully dark it is. Cast is indeed stacked. It's not the first time Christian Bale has been in an Asian prison - Empire of the Sun anyone? THAT is a beautiful movie.

My god.. a few of these comments.. lmfao. HP is coming, relax you weirdos. Its really not that serious. Anyways.. This is by far my favorite of the batman series. I connect very deeply with the conversations around loss and where fault lies- that bit about wishing someone never existed, Ive been there and its a terrible place to be. Y'all were spot on about convincing yourself of something of something you don't believe, especially a child. "If i had just waited 2 minutes, that man wouldn't have been there" while technically true, just isn't the way the world works, and only real life experience can teach you that. Keep up the great content guys, love hangin out. :D EDIT: PLEASE watch peaky blinders at some point. Great show start to finish. It has become a bit overbearing with the way certain people idolize the characters, but i promise its a fantastic show. And some notes on the movie: 1. Bruce was rude to his guests because it was the quickest way to get them out, kept his identity hidden from them, and i think he actually half believes what he was saying. 2. Gotham was created from a combination of NYC, Chicago, and Seattle. 3. "The Narrows" is the underground area, where all the criminals hang out. Gothams ghetto is located below the Manhattan type island IIRC. 4. At the end, rachel said she will wait for him. Its not safe for them to be together while he is batman, she is leverage, but they love each other and will wait until hes saved the world, pretty much.

It's not NYC. Gotham is its own thing, though it certainly takes inspo from NYC and Chicago (as it did in the comics). Nolan actually composites shots of different cities around the world (but mostly Chicago) to create the Gotham of his films.

Gothem is based off new York but the dark knight trilogy, in which this is the first film, was shot in chicago

Christopher Nolan does use CGI. VFX arguably made his career what it is and he makes sure to dismiss the hundreds of artists that worked overtime on Inception, interstellar etc because it's cool to say he only uses practical effects!

I really dislike the Batman Comics and all Comics in general. I love Manga and hate this american super hero bullshit. But this movies could catch me and it is not Christopher Nolan as you felt for me it is Hans Zimmer who carried this movies. All the scenes where you said how godlike Nolan did this I only felt the awe of Hans Zimmers music. Dont know if you had somehow the same but could not name it because it was nearly always at the same scene. Was a bit surprised you called all the greatness in this movie from great actors to Nolan but you did not mention in one sentence how godlike the music is that Hans Zimmer produced.
