So excited! Probably one of my favorite portrayals of real world events turned into TV

Hyperion

Another channel i am subbed to, called Reaction Therapy Just finished a chernobyl watch through last week. mikey, sean, yall are in for a serious treat. This is such a good show. I cannot wait for your turn to watch it He makes FANTASTIC content like MSP. i cannot recommend checking him out. Hes a professional therapist that talks about the movies/shows/music he consumes. He just finished Better Call Saul last month, and is going through Walking Dead, Dexter, and Squid Game currently. But he has done Death Note, attack on titan, arcane, Severance, Breaking Bad, The Last of Us, and a few other shows i cant think of right now. If yall are curious, he has a good youtube with cut down versions of his reactions, but they only show half of his discussions

Cristabel

“Only women and toddlers have meltdowns!” 😂😂😂hype you guys are watching this amazing show man!

Johnathon Pedersen

ReactionTherapy is great. Currently watching along with his walking dead reactions.

Kevin Bisson

I haven't seen this since it first came out. I remember being blown away by it and am really excited to experience it again with the guys! Cheers!

Hyperion

hell yeah brother

Kylezart

Haven't seen this since it first aired! This will be like watching it all over again! Im stoked.

Sarah Harrelson

My favorite reactionists watching my FAVORITE mini series!! Subscribed on patreon just for this... this mini series and Lord of the Rings are my two most rewatched things, like 20x. God i hope you like this! So so so good

Kylezart

Before Sean saw it on the news the next day, nearly an entire city was dead....

Cristabel

This series is one of the most difficult things to watch ever. Brace yourselves, it gets harder.

MomzillaAngie

I watch him too! He’s awesome. ❤️

MomzillaAngie

The old man that everyone applauds at the meeting is the maester at Winterfell on GoT.

Steven A Brown

for those who seen this, ive never watched it, is it best to watch alone, or is this not hard to follow with a reaction ??

LittleHorus

I'm Ukranian and i was born few months prior this accident. This one is close to heart, thank you for watching - it's so well executed and truely a masterpiece of a serie.

💜💜💜💜

Willow Tree

The older gentleman, who caught the attention of the meeting, think: Game of Thrones, Winterfell........

Tiago Ferreira

Why would a "Roman show" have Italian accents?

Perry Taliaferro

"Only women have meltdowns" :D It was perfect timing when Sean said that... the wife was walking by my computer and heard what he said. She... well... she replied with a comment I won't type here. Hahaha. I almost told her he was just joking, but I thought I would let it sit for a few. :D EDIT - and I want to say right off the bat, that I bet Mike (and Sean to some extent) will get my eyes going like I'm cutting onions, at least a few times during this series. EDIT - And Mike does a hell of a Tom Brokaw! :)

Eric is Me

This show is especially meaningful for us MSP-OGs who grew up with this event.

Perry Taliaferro

Well, looks like Last of Us is next after this, huh? ;)

Castiel

I agree!!! It’s a must

I have this on DVD, watched it a few times and everytime time I got angrier knowing what they covered up. We still don't know the true number of deaths or people with side affects years later. Here In Great Britain 6 days after the explosion, radiation passed mainly over the north and west. Heavy rainfall washed the radioactive fallout primarily caesium-137 out of the atmosphere and onto the ground, concentrating mostly in high-altitude, upland regions. The hardest-hit areas were: North Wales (particularly Snowdonia) Cumbria (in North West England) South and West Scotland (such as Dumfries and Galloway) Parts of Northern Ireland Because the peaty soil in these upland areas bound poorly to the caesium, the radiation was easily absorbed by grass and vegetation. This led to strict government restrictions on thousands of UK sheep farms to prevent contaminated meat from entering the food supply, with some final farm restrictions only being fully lifted in 2012.

carrot

I live in the UK & I remember that they were picking up radiation down in Cornwall & parts of wales as it blew across!

SamlovesWillow

Same, I'm from Manchester so it was close to us too

Guna

Guys, I’m not Russian, but from an area affected by Chernobyl. I’m glad they didn’t go for gimmick accents. It really isn’t an issue. And this is the best depiction of Soviet Union that I have ever seen on TV. BTW Chernobyl is in Ukraine now and the sacrifice that Ukrainians had to make to stop the catastrophe is still remembered vividly.

Travis Groot

Need the next one as soon as possible lol

On getting in trouble as a kid.... I was a good boy but now and then my friend Craig would get me in trouble.... Defiantly not me... We once ran up a hill in the night, sounds fine yes, it would have been but our feet couldn't touch the floor unless necessary... We ran over a streets worth of cars jumping from one to the other, car alarms going off left and right... They didn't catch us as we hid in a garden with a big wall.... It is one of my funniest memories, I hope we didn't badly hurt a persons car but yea... Probably did.... Bad Nicky *Slaps hand*

As for why they didn't use russian accents, the director specifically wanted them focusing on their performance of this story than to learn how to properly speak in an accent they may or may not do well, as it could've impacted their performances. I'm going based on my memory of watching the podcast the director did alongside the airing of each episode. I also learned from watching people who are experts in the field react to the show that they did exaggerate and speed up certain things, and in some cases show things that wasn't there irl, like the plume of smoke. It's fascinating

TheWalrus

To put into perspective what high doses of radiation do to the body, picture microwaving a hamburger patty. You know how it gets both weirdly soft but rubbery and all the fluids leak out? Now imagine that's your lungs, eyes, blood, and skin.

A Romanian named Andrei

For folks in the Soviet Block (and adjacent countries - Romanian here) there was such a strong culture of “my superiors know what they’re doing”. If you were told by a superior that something was true, you just sort of had to believe it. The alternative was often imprisonment or a labor camp or death (depending on the context). A lot of of what happened at Chernobyl was people putting blind faith into their superiors. It’s why none of the workers inside went “I’m out!” even as it became clear that the space around them was unsafe.

George Savage

What's up Sean and Mike? Physics graduate from England here! It's been great to see you watching this and discovering just how horrifying radiation is. Never apologise for asking questions, there are no stupid ones. Radiation at this level boils down to particles travelling at incredibly high speeds that have enough energy to interact with and break down the structure of atoms within your body (or mess with your DNA!). Your cells begin to break down, hence the bleeding and very visceral reaction of all of the poor workers and firemen. The reason they tasted metal is because the radiation began to break apart or modify the cells in their mouths (taste buds, etc). I won't go into any more about the show, but this is a really powerful watch and a reminder for mankind to innovate with but always respect nuclear power. Use it, yes, but be safe. Love you guys, enjoy the rest of the series.

BS Productions Radio

Towards the end of this first episode, Mike, you mentioned The Last of Us, and it was something about zombies. Although it is zombie adjacent, it's a very different take on the genre with a great story. It is one of the best Video Game to Movie/TV show adaptations I have ever seen. Given the fact it also has HBO quality like Chernobyl and GOT, The Last of Us is worthy of consideration to watch! I hope others agree and it makes it to a ballot. Fallout is another video game to tv adaptation that is very well done as well.

I was in Jr High when this happened. I still remember when we started getting nuclear disaster drills at school. In 9th grade, a fallout shelter area was added to the front of the school. Utterly horrifying seeing this portrayal of the disaster. So many people just trying to do anything they could to help. Many true, hardworking heroes, manipulated by the fear and arrogance of “so called” superiors. 😭🤬 I’m glad that the true horror of these events is being revealed to the world. I just pray that valuable insight is gained from it. This must NEVER happen again.

VideoMixer1000

"hey i pucked my anus out" sorry but when you guys said that i stupidometer immediatly maxed out. Of course a faulty meter and not you guys saying completely stupid shit haha. BEST REACTORS hands down! I am lookin forwards watching the show with you guys

Gryff

All this kerfuffle and a TV show over 31 dead russians and an estimated 4,000ish cancer deaths. Meanwhile adding last nights casualties we are at 1.46 MILLION dead trying to take Ukraine.

joeltt1

I too was also "thrown" a bit by "The Kings" english in this series. Having already seen the entire series, I *think* the reason was because the Actors chosen looked the most like the real people they played. If memory serves, there is a reel of the actual characters at the end, end, of the series and it makes the comparisons - Make sure you dont miss it!

DarkAether

Russian accents or not, i'm sure they did it this way so everyone could understand what's being told this way. Anyhow, incredible series, good luck.

DarkAether

speaking of HBO, True Detective Season 1, my favorite season ever. Consider it

Kisha Potts

It really could be a coin toss. Heads watch reaction. Tails watch the episode first. I've never seen any of the Dark Knight movies and chose to watch for first time with the guys. I managed through it ok. Then once I watched the movies alone, it made me appreciate the guys even more lol! It's totally upto you. This series is very detail oriented since they're going minute by minute of the catastrophe. So... There is a certain comfort in being able to watch and rewind at your own leisure. I've watched this series many many times and still had to look things up just to verify my thoughts and feelings lol! Learn something new each time! I'm enjoying the guys reaction very much. It's like watching through new eyes. May you have a happy watch to this brutal gut wrenching series!

Extra_Ordinary_Rage

I did the same lol...I'm gonna go down their Game of Thrones journey with them too, but I came here for this show specifically. It's more compelling that they were alive and old enough to remember this when it actually happened. They know how serious this was, and I cant wait for the next episodes.

Toy_Foundry

This is great but why are their blurred segments when this is a paid patreon submission?

Khali

Little fun fact: The explosion blew off the 1,000-ton reactor lid

Jacob

"Watch the panel while we're gone", "it's not working", "just watch it." Fantastic writing, this show.

The next mini series you should watch is Band of brothers! Another awesome HBO series

Asmodean

There are no commercial fusion reactors. They are all experimental. All commercial nuclear power plants are fission reactors. Fusion and fission are opposite processes. Also China syndrome is total bs from scientific perspective. Nothing to do with physics or reality. At some point pressure would be too much for reactor to melt it. And that is not to mention that the closer to core the lower the gravity pull downward is and at the very centre of earth the gravity won’t pull you anywhere. So even if that melting earth bs was real — reactor would never go any further than Earth’s core. Oh and nuclear engineers can make sure that stuff like that won’t happen (for all intents and purposes). Chernobyl blew up due to bad design, missmanagement, operating in critical conditions. So everything was done wrong there. And no, cement wouldn’t do that do your hand. What could do that to your hand is graphite (from the control rod). Man, sometimes I really wish that nuclear power expert would be sitting there debunking all the bs and radio-phobia right there. “Million people dead”, while in reality about 40 people died with up to 4000 people with reduced life span. This show, while undoubtedly having great aesthetic have so much bullshit and these 2 clueless guys consume it and make up even more bs in their head(((

Vlad Cherrylack

From what I understand, the problem was a crucial design flaw. The emergency system meant to abort the test (specifically the control rods materials) could, under certain circumstances and momentum, cause an exponential increase in the reaction instead of stopping it. Furthermore, it is important to remember that, to date, Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain the worst nuclear events in history.

Benjamin Blue

As someone who was raised by Soviets in the barely post-soviet era (90s), your reactions to the culture and tone of everything is both fascinating and hilarious. Like in a good way. This series was surprisingly loyal to the realities of Soviet life, minus the accents (which were British because producers felt that forcing British actors to affect a Russian accent would come across as hoaky and inauthentic), and its always fun to see Westerners discover some small part of what things were like back then.

Mikīla Killwell

why did the russian accent become pedro from napoleon dynamite for a moment 😅

Bob

It's naive to think things like this couldn't happen in the USA. just look at water quality in flint or lots of places over the country. Or the shortcuts and deregulation at Boeing or other companies. Even with whistle blowers things are done and covered up all the time that hurt the public.

Bob

As for response with FEMA being dismantled just a store of Forrest fire and the aftermath of that leads to devastation.

Carlos Gonzalez

I love the skillet skrillex drops. Two very different musical styles.

Paul Liversage

Great reaction...joined for this....but...but ..are you being ironic when you say when you say what if you move to another country and a nutter takes control..or..at least hear we can't get shot for making a mistake

Sharpgirl

One ton is 2000 lbs. Omg
