2026-09-12 19:00 Emma Watson??

Marcy

Just realized the young scientist with Emily Watson plays Larys Strong in House of the Dragon.

Carlos García

What do you mean Emma Watson? hahahaha Btw, love having 2 TV show episodes to watch every week!

Will

The general who drove the truck close to the plant to get radiation readings was Vladimir Pikalov. He was a war hero of WWII and knew because of his status that party members wouldn't dismiss his statement. That is why he drove the truck himself so there would be no question of the reading's validity. A true badass.

carrot

I'm not sure but I think the Russian spoken parts might have english subtitles!

Cristabel

This show is so very chilling. Literally chills over and over during each episode. Just absolute top tier television. Absolute masterpiece. A beautiful, haunting piece of art. God it’s just so brutal.

I became a OG yesterday... I have found out there are many of us and also that we want medals... I think we need them... Or a hat, where's your merch lol. A hat that says "I AM AN OG" lol.... Bit cheeky as a new OG but I am what I am... Cheeky :)

nickyc777

There was an animated film in Briton, I forget the name but was on a Pink Floyd album cover, set in the UK, it was scary

nickyc777

The fact in military we have far worse now to hurt each other is so scary. I know its a trigger for some but Japan lost a hell of a lot from tech of 70-80 years ago that I think is similar in scale or effect. God knows what they have now. AI scares me but the choices of people more, lets hope everyone stays too afraid to use something like this on another.

Perry Taliaferro

As an "OG", I do remember thinking that the movie Red Dawn was going to be a historical document.

George Savage

The scientist played by Emily Watson is a fictional character that represents the scientific community around the world that attempted to help the soviets fix the problem. The cooperation shown by the scientific community to save humanity is inspiring.

Troy Corbin

I'm going to call it Comrade Pepper in Public from now on.

nickyc777

Those 3 to stand up is amazing, true heroes. I like to think of myself as quite selfless as I only have my Mam and Tony her soon to be husband but give to anyone if I can, I would be too scared even if I had the skills to fix it. Those 3 are amazing, to be that brave and selfless is something special. Nice to know there are people like that, a sad shame that they had to do it though.

VideoMixer1000

I criticized you once for sometimes not listening and then failing to understand some plot lines. But whoever criticizes must also be able to praise, and I want to do just that. I know it doesn't sound much like praise, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT when you guys start doing your absolute shit impersonations of characters in whatever you're watching and start talking total bullshit that literally no other channel can reproduce. Every time you do that, my brain cells start dying and I'm laughing my ass off! For example, at 19:20 when you started improvising a discussion with Boris Shcherbina, I couldn't take it—I was laughing so much, it's funny as fuck. No other channel does that as well as you both. So... fucking... funny! Keep up the good work; I can't wait for the next episodes of Chernobyl and Game of Thrones!

Asmodean

Come one guys. You must have had education. Radiation is not what is killing during nuclear explosion. Only a tiny portion of energy is going to radiation. Most go to heat and kinetic. These are the things that will likely kill you. The reason so much radiation exposure was in Chernobyl was ironically because it was not a nuclear explosion. Just steam and chemical explosion. All the radioactive stuff was just left in the reactor and around it, permanently heating itself.

Phylicia ✨🌸

I loooooove the intro! Hats off to you, Sean! 🤩

MomzillaAngie

I'm 55. I remember The Day After being shown in school!! Try stomaching the UK version called Threads. That one will stick with you. I remember being 100% sure nuclear war will happen before I grew up. My kids do not believe this at all. It was a scary time. But, you know, we had all that great 80s music, so...

Stealthy Lunatic

Guys, thank you for watching this show. It can be a very hard watch, but it is so well done. Probably the only reason I don't feel bad voting for this show. I might not be an OG, but I've listened to Dan Carlin before, talking about the nuclear threat during the cold war and this "nuclear sword of Damocles". Sean's elaboration reminded me of this concept and has given me a personal perspective of it.

Joanna

"Come on guy". Why couldn't you just let go the first two sentences of this comment? Are you feeling better now?

Joanna

Spoiler

Sarah Harrelson

Not really, they never address it in the show after this episode, and it's not a spoiler that she is a scientist... just answers to questions they had during the episode that aren't addressed in any other episode

Matt Auzzie Man

emma watson ahahahhaahhaahhahaahhaahah damn she got old lol

marc

Napolitan is Itallian, Napolean is French

Kevin Bisson

Man, this show is so good. I watched it when it came out and have forgotten a lot. So happy to re-enjoy it with the guys!

Jane at Home

Was that the one where the woman gives birth in a barn? Still traumatized.

Jane at Home

They address it at the end of the last episode.

Zima Roo

I never considered the trauma adults today must carry, growing up with the threat of nuclear attacks! Having it woven into your every day and school lessons and how that constant anxiety would wire your brain as a young kid. So sad

tatufmetuf

There is a smarter everyday video where he goes into a nuclear plant, its super interesting

MomzillaAngie

I think so. Threads goes years down the road after the bombs into the fall of civilization and people basically turning into animals. It’s highly disturbing. Speculations have said the truth is life would be a whole lot worse and you wouldn’t want to be around for it. Both those movies I think are a available to watch free on YouTube

MomzillaAngie

If you look them up, you see that they did survive it for years if my memory serves.

Asmodean

How they got 4 megatons explosion from steam is very unclear to me. Yes, steam explosions are powerful (certainly more powerful than common people expect), but the explosion here is not nuclear, so no way it can destroy everything in 30 km range.

DarkAether

''You are dealing with something that has never occurred on this planet before''... that line, every time i hear it wether its through reactors or watching the show again myself absolutely shakes me.

Strait Jacket

A lot of my career has been spent watching body language CLOSELY as a matter of safety, quite literally to avoid bodily harm and injury to myself, my staff and others. The actor for all of these people knocked it out of the park but the super subtle acting for Gorbachev stood out to me in the meeting. He hesitates, takes a moment to find the words to project detachment and stoicism but his little fidgets, throat clears and facial demeanor shows that he was deeply affected. The Soviets didn't have a great track record of value of life to say the least, but that actor whether true to life or not showed so much nuance. When your entire national identity is strength, you have to project that to keep the morale faith and confidence up. Making hard choices is the role of a leader, but he showed there's a massive difference in giving an order that MIGHT end up with casualties versus a choice where you KNOW for a fact that people will die.

nezudev

turns out that nuclear energy is by far one of the safest and cleanest ways to make energy today. It's so much better regulated than other forms. It just gets a bad rep from people that don't understand it and also the media from mis representing it... it has NOTHING to do with nuclear bombs and cannot every cause a nuclear explosion. It also turns out that several of the power plant panics in the US over many decades were actually just the media and the government stirring up the public intentionally.

nezudev

I hope yall realize that a lot of people who tried to help around this time were very very brave people. They aren't all apart of the government of that time wanting to hide things

nezudev

I think he meant Emily Watson, who is the actor in the show lol

That European Guy

You said it correctly - nuclear holocaust and death by radiation are the childhood horrors of all who were growing up during those times. I'm from Croatia, and I was 13 years old when Chornobyl happened. Everyone was watching the weather forecast to know where the radioactive cloud would go next as winds were carrying it over Europe. When it was over us, we also didn't go to school for 3 days, and all the public events were cancelled. People were still going to work, though

@28:57 -- the man in the blue jacket asking her to take the baby is the same guy curly hair lady was speaking with (and his wife with their baby) on the bridge the night of the explosion. The people who stood to watch the glow from the plant were exposed to SO much radiation even from that far away. So everyone you saw in that scene on the bridge (all those kids playing and families watching the glow) had those same radiation burns the man holding the baby had

Distantnova

We absolutely do anticipate things like this happening, which is why most reactor complexes had containment structures around them even then. If you want a fun watch, research the experiments of people testing the integrity of said structures and spent fuel containment casks; from plains to trains and mild explosives, not much makes a dent.

Justin

Doesn’t it get so much worse… like that explosion isn’t it right?

Justin

I’ve watched several documentaries on the birthing byproduct of this event. Children with terrible terrible deformities.

Justin

If they told them 60 million people will be displaced or die. I think there would be some volunteers, instead of just ordering them to their death for nothing….

Nicholas Bevan

i bet you two would love the movie Tetris, it has a great comedic look into the soviet union. "The death of stalin" too.

Nicholas Bevan

It won 77 awards with double or triple the nominations.

blizzity

"first I have to figure out what boron is" absolutely destroyed me

Becky Johnson

Please don't confuse actual communism with Soviet in the 80's.

Becky Johnson

The biggest problem was that Dyatlov told them everything was fine, so they had a scientist that told them they didn't have to act.

Ladyjaded

I am Deaf. I know this is a pain but only the show is subbed but you guys aren’t. I don’t know why. (Episode 2 - 4… for some reason episode one worked but not the rest. Any chance you guys know why? Is there anything you can do? I really want to know what you both are saying! I love your reactions!

7Paulii

right now i work in plant like that in europe (for just few months) and I have to say that safety is absolutely amazing here, you always carry dozimeter when you go to instruments that are powered, its right next to river but thats not what i wanted.... first apointment i had (as eastern european - im from Slovakia, and as you may know its right next to Ukraine) was measuring radioactive background of your body. I asked many people if they went there but most didnt BUT all Slovaks went because we usually have higher background because it happened so close. My father was 14 and my mom was 12 when it happened.
