To avoid a Harry Potter situation in the next movie, lil wig's real name is Seneca Crane. My favourite thing about this series is it does not shy away from the complex mental trauma that the characters endure, Haymitch has PTSD from his own games, each year he has to mentor District 12 children who have no chance of winning and he's watched them all die (at this point in time its been 23 years/46 children), and he medicates with alcohol

I loved watching how into this you were! A lot of people feel the next film in the series, Catching Fire, is a rare example of a sequel film that's even better than the first, so you're in for a treat if you continue (please do!!) Mike, I don't blame you for not feeling the Katniss/Peeta chemistry, I think that's how you're supposed to feel. It's awkward and uncomfortable, because even though Peeta sincerely had a crush on Katniss already, Katniss is only thrown together with him because of the Games. The whole process of getting to know him and possibly developing feelings is tainted by the situation they're in, and for survival she has to act like she feels things she isn't even convinced of yet. On top of that, Katniss was always very aloof, doesn't trust easily, and hasn't really entertained romantic ideas before, because she's been so focused on her family's daily survival. You guys may not realize it but I think you actually caught on to a TON of stuff about the nuances and dynamics of this society which can get a little lost in translation from the book to the screen! The people in the Capital are intentionally ridiculous, driven by excess and spectacle. The government encourages this among its wealthy citizens. The idea is to keep the people in the Capital entertained and distracted and keep the districts oppressed, and of course not let them have any actual communication or interaction between districts. The Games had to evolve into this extravagant pageantry and orchestrated conflicts/obstacles because at some point they'd have realized just having kids beat each other to death in a cage was going to become unpopular. So they make them into TV personalities before sending them into the arena, they allow betting, they allow people to "sponsor" them by giving money so the mentors can send in gifts. But they also have to engineer dangerous environments and creatures because most of these kids' instinct is going to be how Katniss and the redhead girl behaved when the Game started -- to get away from direct conflict, avoid combat, and just try to outlast everyone else by hiding. The dynamics of this system are pretty diabolical. Like the people in the Capital love to act like they love these kids, but subconsciously they really don't see the District kids as fully human. When Katniss surrounded Rue with flowers, it was basically the first time in the Games anyone had overtly grieved the death of an "opponent," acknowledged their humanity, and forced everyone to really see it for what it was.

Yes. The districts are just slaves to the capitol. They are penned in and barely allowed enough to live. They all are kept track of and will be hunted down if they try to escape.

I’ve always seen the Hunger Games main trilogy like the old Star Wars trilogy. The second movie, Catching Fire is like The Empire Strikes Back and just like that movie it’s widely considered the best one of the series.

I’ve always recognized that Haymitch is damaged and traumatized from his being in the games and winning aka killing a lot of people but this is the first time I’ve thought about how he’s also been mentor to maybe like 20 tributes and they all died. Tough to keep caring!!

Important info 1. When Cinna (Katniss' stylist) says "I'm not allowed to bet, but if i could, I'd bet on you", he's actually not allowed to bet in the Hunger Games. When Haymitch was watching the children play sword fighting before the Games started, there was a billboard in the background. It posts the betting on who the people think will win the H Games. That's why there's performance auditions, interviews, and scoring before the Games start. It gives the people a good idea who to bet on. Similar to betting in a horse race or dog race. 2. The performance auditions, interviews, and scoring are also there to encourage people to sponsor a tribute. A sponsor pays money toward the tribute to send them gifts in the games. The gifts are the parachutes you see being dropped in the middle of the game. The further into the Game, the more expensive the gift becomes, even if it's just a bottle of water. Also, gifting medicine is VERY expensive. That's why it's so important to get sponsors to like you. 3. Tracker-jackers and the dogs chasing them at the end of the Games are all called "mutts" because the Capital creates them in a lab by combining the DNA of different animals and even humans. In the books, the dogs that are chasing them at the end actually have the faces of the dead tributes. They try to torture them psychologically too, not just physically. 4. A Mockingjay (the bird on Katniss' pin) is the offspring of jabberjays and mockingbirds. Jabberjays were "mutts" created by the Capital originally used to spy on the people, but they were a failed experiment so they let them loose in the wild. The jabberjays ended up breeding with the mockingbirds and the Mockingjay was born. They are nature's symbol of rebellion. 5. There's a good reason why you guys (and any one else) didn't feel good chemistry between Katniss and Peeta. Katniss is pretending to love Peeta because she knows the cameras are watching and she's only thinking about survival. Now Peeta's feelings on the other hand....... 6. Yes, the winners get a reward for winning the H Games. They (and their families) are relocated to Victor's Village within their district and will live in a nice house and will always have food provided for them.

The chemistry gets better by the way. Katniss herself in this particular film/book is unsure of how she feels about Peeta, and is at this point just trying to play the game to survive. As a character, she isn’t good at the acting part of trying to get sponsors. She’s not a schmoozer, she doesn’t have the charisma to sell something she doesn’t feel. It’s a canon attribute of her character and is somewhat of a plot point. And Jennifer Lawrence is REALLY good at portraying being bad at acting lol. But I can’t wait until you see the rest of the series.

I am a big fan of CCTV, makes me feel safer. Yes if I get hurt its still bad but the fact its there makes sure that person don't hurt another, hopefully. I have been hurt before, got a broken cheek bone. Some people without CCTV will go out looking to hurt another if they can for fun. Bad people

the reason catnip got that care package for her burn was because hamage(the mentor) saw that she was probably going to die and then went and schmoozed up with sponsors to get her them to help her. It showed it on screen but it was quick and easy to miss!

The reason you dont feel the chemistry between them, is because Katniss is acting, but Peeta is not. It goes over it in the books better, but katniss is shmoozing up the audience to get on their good side.

One of my fave reactions so far!! Thanks, guys.. the next 1 is gonna blow your socks off. JL was paid 500,000 base salaryfor this film. 10 million for the second. The blue tone on the screen is so reminiscent of the mid 2000’s.. a lot of critics of the first film, complain about the “skaky camera.” I read an explanation somewhere that makes the most sense. It’s not just stylistic choices by the director, but given the brutal subject matter & theme of kids killing kids, he had to show the brutality & gritty “realness,” of the games, while also conforming to a PG-13 rating. The books didn’t have that problem, but alas, the source material and adaptations are two different animals completely, so I don’t really compare the mediums in that way.. Sutherland wasn’t initially considered for this role.. he had to campaign pretty hard for it. He was perfection. It’s America.. dystopian future setting. Someone should have told Clove (girl who could have easily killed Katniss at Cornicopia,) that she shouldn’t play with her food before she eats it. JL’s acting always gets me in my feels and it’s rare an actor can do that with me. Another one surprises most people. But it’s Sanka, from GoT. Freaking Utah in the subtitles. I’m dead. lol Byeeeree!!

So, they can put there names in as credit for extra rations of food, or water usage, or other basic necessities. Thats why Gales name was in so often, because he does it for his family and anyone else. You need to be of tribute age, obviously, in order to barter chances of being chosen. It was also his last year to be a tribute, so he kind of went all in, in order to get as many life necessities as he could.

Then losing that war, and Panem is what arose from the destruction and chaos.

I love that you guys enjoyed this. For all the things that got left out, I understand. As for the chemistry between Katniss and Peeta, it is meant to be awkward. They only had the one real interaction when Peeta gave her the burnt bread. And that moment is significant to Katnip because it all coincides when her father dies and she becomes the bread-winner, in literal terms, for her family. The filming is done well since it does feel like we are getting Katnip's point of view. I am a little upset that they didn't allow Thresh, Rue's partner, go out fighting Kato like he should have because he stole his Feast bag where he kills the girl who about to kill Katnip. As for the finale with the Muttations, Mutts for short, they were all supposed to look like their district counterpart: their fur like their hair and their exact same eyes. Which to me always implied they were gene splicing with humans awhile. One final thing, I wish they let them put the berries in their mouths before spitting them back out when they yelled at them to stop lol And, lastly, for my personal canon, they will always be called Katnip and Peeta Bread.

Agreed, on youtube it was one or sometimes half a movie (LOTR, Potter) a week, now it's 2+ hours of movie, GOT, and something else! So much value, and so much extra fun time spent with the guys

You two may not see this, but i appreciate your reaction to this! I think you were really trying to understand what was going on, especially with a plot as thick as this series. Of course you could imagine the details that were left out from the books, not only the world building details but the horrific ones as well. Example; the dog mutts at the end of the games were created by the Capitol/Gamemakers. In the books, they were described to each resemble a dead tribute. Black coiled hair and dark brown eyes with a collor that had an "11" on it for Rue, Glimmer (blonde district one girl) had blue eyes and a shiny blonde coat and so on. Extremely twisted. There are also servants in the background of some scenes that are called Avoxs, people who got in trouble and had their tongues cut out.
