ODW

One of the things I really like about this show is that it doesn't attempt to say anything about nuclear power as a technology. Instead, it spends so much time showing you what happens in a paranoid, authoritarian regime, where everyone behaves as though they're taking crazy pills. I would love for this show to be mandatory viewing in high school social studies classes. It does such a brilliant job of showing how people negotiate living in a completely dystopian world, how the truth always bats last, so to speak, and when it does, it swings for the fences.

Your analogy of graphite to tin foil out of an oven.. was perfect!

SamlovesWillow

Jared Harris is one of my favourite actors and is outstanding in this

Echo Moon

This series is very good, but I saw it when it came out and once is good enough for me. I just cannot watch it with you guys, sorry. That is not to diminish the series, I really loved it, but......

Phylicia ✨🌸

This episode was the hardest one to watch for me. 😔

Perry Taliaferro

<- Dog person. Soooo, yeah, this is a rough one for me. EDIT - I think you guys are misinterpreting Barry Keoghan's character (the one that didn't finish killing the dog he shot). He tried to save the dog at first, he was telling him to run "go", but when the dog bark he freaked and shot the dog and then was just lost. He wasn't trying to make the dog suffer, he wasn't a bad guy, he was just a kid that got drafted and was in a tough spot. Should he have finished it, yes, but he was somewhat traumatized because he had just shot a dog. EDIT 2 - Why I should wait to edit, because this is what Mike just got through saying seconds after I posted my edit. Thanks Mike!!!!

Joanna

This was the hardest episode. The soldier who killed the dogs was a great character. It had to be done, but "don't let them suffer" and "go outside" show he was a good person. Thank you, Sean, for the short lecture—I also learned something about graphite. You're the perfect duo—this time you couldn't watch, and Mike calmly guided you through.

MomzillaAngie

The hardest one to watch. These are the most innocent of victims.

Perry Taliaferro

I'm totally ignorant on the science of nuclear workings.... other than what I've seen here and there, but that was a fantastic analogy

MomzillaAngie

And they were given all the vodka they could drink. If that doesn't make you drink, nothing will.

Cristabel

This episode was the hardest to watch. So effing bleak man. So sad. So much suffering because the Soviet Union had to save effing face

MomzillaAngie

Did you see him in The Terror? I’d love the guys to do that one someday.

nezudev

your statement of that country being insecure is accurate. I also think the same of the US's current government - insecure and dumb af lol

Eric is Me

To set your minds at ease, the soldiers-on-the-roof scene was highly dramatized. None of them died in any unusual length of time. In fact, a good many of them still survive today. Their exposure having been limited is what kept them from quick death because radiation danger depends not just on how intense it is, but on the total dose absorbed over time. There were leukemia incidents in years that followed, but many of them were treatable and nearly all of the men lived normal lives, or are still alive (age dependent).

Daniel Pridemore

The graphite itself would be extremely radioactive itself from absorbing radiation nonstop from the core.

Dan

My first time was in Kuwait when I was just 20. Helping my buddy put down his 14 y/o cancer ridden German Sheppard because he couldn't afford the 600$ vet bill to do the same thing was the hardest thing either of us had to do. Dogs know only love. Animals are truly innocent. It may sound weird but I haven't been hunting since.

VideoMixer1000

Would be way better if you made breakdowns after your reactions. even 5-10 minutes are more than enough. makes it way better!

LordM8rshal

They exploited the trust that animals, pets and dogs in particular, place in humans in order to kill them. And as a dog owner, that episode devastated me. If it weren't real, if it were a fictional movie, fine, I could live with that. But the thought that this actually happened makes me infinitely sad.

Kylezart

I think you hit it right on the head, Sean. The graphite absorbed quadrillions of radioactive particles, and instead of the "bullets" permeating and passing through, they were instead absorbed into the graphite.

DudeIsh26

On that one section of the roof that is “the most dangerous place on earth”, I would have done an air strike from at least 20 miles above it. The missiles would be hollowed out only containing enough of an explosive force to disperse iodine, sand and water out of the missile upon impact. Only thing is that when they got close enough you couldn’t remotely pitot them anymore. So you would need to observe wind speeds and atmospheric conditions to enable a controlled fall. Then maybe program each missiles’ detonator to ignite when the circuitry is completely destroyed or disconnected (open circuit). I don’t know how any of that could be accomplished. But it’s the only thing I though of to maybe get something within range to somehow help without much control at all.

Jane at Home

And Mad Men, and incredible in The Crown.

Apple Pip 000

When you saw the men in the white hazard suits spraying everything, that was a sticky liquid that dries like rubber. It bound to the top layer of soil stopping a huge amount of radioactive dust blowing around and up into the atmosphere.

Freddie Meredith

This one was very dark. I'll say this show is amazing

Sarah_M

It is such a hard watch as an animal lover. 💔💔💔💔 Also I've seen that episode of River Monsters and it's so fascinating. I adore that series, I should rewatch it.

joeltt1

AND... they didnt even get a vast % of the animals, tons of animals running all over The Zone today.

joeltt1

Stay Stronk, Camrades! Ep 5 is near.

MomzillaAngie

The Crown is one I’ve been meaning to see!!

Becky Johnson

BRUH! You think America DURING THE COLD WAR would give Russia help if it could because the US would want to "help the world"?!?!? Stop it right now, you are killing me

Johnie 💮

will you be doing harry potter reunion soon?

blizzity

"this is my first nuclear disaster" during the 'egg basket' scene sent me omg

Carlos Gonzalez

There are at least 5 Got actors in this show.

Carlos Gonzalez

He's the reason I started watching the Expanse.

Carlos Gonzalez

Exactly. One of the big things was when one of our battleships got hit by Covid real bad and the sailors sounded the alarm aboutit. Trump got mad and said it made us look weak. It's comparable to the reasons the Soviets used.

Carlos Gonzalez

Cracks me up that Barry dated Sabrina Carpenter.

Pharazul

This show really smothers you and kicks you in the gut repeatedly. But you feel you owe it to everyone who participated, sacrificed, and was innocently victimized by this event to keep pushing through.
