I'm taking a break from finishing X, Y and Z until after I have fixed anything people don't like about the current batch of episodes. I'm put in a position where I'm being asked to make these into a book, but if I release it with the current complaints unresolved, I'll be hearing them forever - and I like myself too much to do Future Matthew and his audience dirty like that. If I push out X, Y and Z before the rest are ready, we'll just lose momentum and people will print the book at home.

So, some things people have complained about that I'm going to fix over the next week or two: - Giving the Broadsword a basket hilt - "Dozen donuts" - Flip the battery symbol on the eel - I cannot be bothered putting the sword frog's sword frog on the 'correct' side, won't fix - Got called anti-semitic for using the term 'golem', will consider alternatives - Change "karate" kiwi to "kung-fu" kiwi - Willing to be bribed to change the King Kangaroo into a more patriotic Kiwi Kakapo - Some complaining that Quat and Verdun aren't real swords, will take time to verify my sources againIf you have any quibbles, I'd appreciate you taking the time to voice them now. Especially if you can offer a stronger alternative and cite your sources.

I'll be meeting with my regular book printer next Friday.

Thank you very much

My god! The alliteration… it’s beautiful…

i fail to see how using the term golem would make someone antisemitic, but maybe i'm just ignorant

David Fields

100%. I think this was a case of someone being too sensitive.

Chris Kuan

Matt did post a small discussion over in chat back when it happened, I think. Basically the term originally referred to a very specific entity in Judaism. Apparently some people feel that taking it out of that context is cultural appropriation.

Stephen Grote

In my opinion Golem should be fine, it is the accepted term for that creature. If it is in the monster manuals of dozens of TTRPGs then I say you can use it in your comic.

Raymond Rabke

Quat seems to be attested as a style of Vietnamese sword on several sites, but I can't find a 'verdun' except one mention on Wikipedia (not a primary source, as your teachers said) as an alternate word for an estoc. Not sure about another v- sword.

I do agree karate isn't right (it literally means an emptyhanded martial art), but ngl, I don't love "kung-fu kiwi" for a katana either, because different Asian cultures getting lumped together is not a great look. What about Kenjutsu/Kenjutsuka Kiwi (lit. sword martial art/artist)?

Justin Doan

Damn, TIL. I didn't know golems weren't a made up fantasy literature thing

Dashogi

Do not know why Basket Hilt Broadsword caused controversy, given that is an actual type of sword.

sindri

Ah yes, people at least fourty years too late to make that complaint, without obviously cherry picking.

Bruce Strong

Been loving the series. So happy you used jian with the older guard. I used to do full contact jianshu.

"Y" could be yataghan, and "Z" could be a Zhanmadao, which according to Wikipedia is the Chinese Horse Chopper type sabre

I am seeing some wiki articles indeed linking to a 16th century rapier and a northeastern city of France which was notable for sword making but yeah that would take some better sources as Raymond said. (Some mentioned final fantasy and I’m not sure if there could be a “VR” kind of alliteration angle that could be taken with that). I also know “Carolingian swords” have also just been called “Viking swords” but that does sound kind of generic but it’s hard to get that elusive V. They were swords predating the seax apparently. “Vikingesverd” was a Scandinavian spelling. I also saw Ulfberht alternatively spelled as Vlfberht, so that could be another thing if Verdun doesn’t work out. Overall I’m excited about this being a book, I don’t think Golem is antisemitic at all, it’s culture and folklore and in many games and things. I guess I get the kung fu > karate kiwi. Tho the kangaroo looked cool the kiwi kakapo would be cool! Idk I honestly loved everything so far, the alliteration and swords are great. I’m curious about XYZ, I can only wonder if you went with Zweihander or Zanbato. Probs the former.

I *didn't* use the basket hilt, that's the issue

Matt Blakeley

Golems are from Jewish FOLKLORE, not religion, so even the most sensitive person has no call to pretend there a reason not to use them. Only a 4chaner deliberately causing trouble would say that.

Matthew Wills

For the same reason I'll never use a "Swiss" army knife, I won't use "Viking" sword. These are still set in the Swords Universe which has its own countries and cultures.

StSquiggy

Honestly I've liked the whole series start to end, but I can understand about wanting to clean up any issues. Sadly don't think I have any specific feedback, I enjoyed it though!

Why is golem anti Semitic? The tie to Judaism is the golem of Prague which was a protector

Jonathan Stein

In agreement with the other golem comments, though I can see why some loud people online would go to that extreme, particularly with recent world events. While golem does have Jewish roots, it has been used repeatedly and subsumed within multiple fantasy worlds and works and lost much of its original cultural associations to most people… just like many other beings and creatures from many other cultures. (And to be very pedantic, the original Jewish golem is made of clay, so would not be ground down to “gravel”, emphasizing that this is a more generalized fantasy golem which is usually made of whatever material is gathered together) If you were still looking for alternatives to avoid the loud angry voices, perhaps ghost or ghoul would be good g-monsters? Grinding ghosts into goo, aka ectoplasm? Griefing ghouls into giving up, since geese are a-holes? Not saying you have to change anything, but I understand looking for alternative options to avoid the trouble of loud angry voices.

ShorahNagi

Agreeing with others that Golem isn't offensive. I hear that and I just think 'creature made of stone capable of moving' - not of the religious sense of it. But I suppose one could still keep the idea and call it a 'granite giant' or something.

While Golems are from Jewish mythology, just mentioning them fighting someone is hardly antisemitic. It's a being made from inanimate matter that follows the commands of its master, and that obviously could include fighting. Not to mention that it's taken on quite the different meaning over the years - there are golems in Minecraft and DnD and a hundred other things, there's nothing antisemitic about those depictions either.

Switching to a basket hilt will be good for B especially when longsword and hand-and-a-half sword are already essentially the same thing (not a complaint, but it's a good reason to diversify your broadsword) Totally understand not redoing the sword frog's sword frog Don't really have opinions on the other points especially that haven't already been said a lot

Z is for Zwiehander X is for Xiphos Y is for yatagan
