i'm really excited that you both started this! I am really enjoying how a lot is happening in between the lines and how satisfying it can therefore be to rewatch and notice new details. Without spoiling anything (i'm at ep 3, the latest one), one aspect which I'm not sure you noticed in ep 1 is that Nakarai Sei (the one living with his boyfriend/male friend) actually used the name "Kazuaki" in his email address because his boyfriend/male friend is called Kazuaki, just like the other protagonist (who lives with his girlfriend - let's call him Kazuaki 1 and Nakarai's partner as Kazuaki 2). Another thing that I had theorised on when I watched ep 1 is that it seems that Kazuaki 2 is not actually Nakarai's boyfriend (which you may have noticed by how i've described him in this comment). It seems like they are close, and have known each other for a long time, but that they haven't actually defined their relationship as romantic and may never have even had sexual relations in the first place (this was my interpretation when i first watched). One of the reasons why I think so is due to how Kazuaki 2 seems to avoid or deny anything that would confirm to Nakarai that he feels the same way/sees their relationship as romantic/queer. For instance, there is a parallel between Nakarai and Kazuaki 1, where they both ask their "partners" if they mind the penpal situation. Kazuaki 1's girlfriend can openly joke directly about whether Kazuaki 1 "wants" her to be worried/jealous because she openly acknowledges that they are in a romantic relationship (regardless of the status of it/other issues). Whereas Kazuaki 2 can only inquire the way a friend would (hiding his jealousy that is obvious to the viewers, but which he seems to deny even to himself) by sounding nonchalant: "the penpal you mentioned?". When he can't contain his frustration, he disguises it as a logical-sounding question : "seriously, why did you even reply to a missent email?" to mask the fact that his worry reflects his own feelings which he doesnt want to come to terms with. Meanwhile, Nakarai, just like Kazuaki 1, hopes that this could be a sign of jealousy and asks Kazuaki2 if he's worried and whether he should "stop tallking to him?". But instead, Kazuaki2 tells him to do as he likes, feigning indifference. The difference between Kazuaki1's girlfriend and Kazuaki2 (in my view), is that the girlfriend shows open affection towards Kazuaki1 to ignore the elephant in the room, but she can do this because they have established their relationship. Whereas Kazuaki2 seems very conscious of the words he can use to respond and tries to appear uninvolved because he wants to appear as a close friend rather than a lover, and this reflects in all of his behaviours throughout the episode. Particularly when he places his hand to Nakarai's face on the bed but rejects Nakarai when Nakarai then holds onto his hand. Lastly (sorry this is long), something interesting i have noticed in Japanese BLs/BLs is that characters that appear most open-minded about topics relating to gender equality and the lgbtq community appear to then have the most difficulty accepting their own identity and living true to it (and we see this with Kazuaki 2 when he says that anything said about women would be too stereotypical and would also apply to men, therefore showing awareness around gender roles and misogyny, especially compared to both protagonists). One example of a different character(s) is Nagisa from HIS, and Birdy from the Taiwanese BL named Your Name Engraved Herein. Both of them are most vocal about standing up for other people who are queer/oppressed but are the ones who leave their male love interests and both get married to women. It seems that the awareness reflects a fragility and self-consciousness which the characters feel helpless about and leads them to seek conformity, as compared to characters like Nakarai Sei and Kazuaki1 who both seem less informed/aware/as detailed about the specifics of certain social norms but have a very stable sense of identity (both know what they want and actively attempt to pursue it). As such, I interpret Kazuaki 2's aversion to physical intimacy as less of a lack of interest (the way I believe it is for Kazuaki 1's girlfriend), and more of an act of denial, because if he were to enact physical intimacy, it would actualise his feelings /the relationship as a romantic one. Phew apologies for the rant and hopefully it's somewhat interesting

Your analysis is so interesting and I’ve only finished episode 2. I didn’t think of Kazuaki 2 being repressed or secretly in love - the language detail is so subtle. - E
