Back in April, People Make Games traveled to Michigan to meet Jerry Gretzinger and the map he's dedicated decades of his life to making. As you'll see, it's a beautiful thing to stand in front of, but there are two big reasons we wanted to tell this story. First of all, it's not really the map that Jerry's been designing all these years, it's a deck of cards that instructs him what he's meant to do to the map each morning.Jerry is an 84-year-old man and is pretty removed from anything resembling the games industry, but this deck of cards is absolutely packed with what we recognized as game design. We were fascinated by that and Jerry, in turn, was fascinated by our fascination. And then, secondly, it turns out Jerry hasn't seen his map laid out in full in more than 14 years. Nobody has. That is until now. With the help of a team of over 20 volunteers, working over three days, we built Jerry's map in all its glory. And the result was spectacular.I know this documentary is a bit of a swing for a YouTube channel called People Make Games, but stick with us on this one, and I think you'll understand why we just had to tell Jerry's story. This may be one of the best things I think we've ever made!

Note for patrons:

Before you get going, I also wanted to mention the sponsorship you'll see at the end of this doc. Longtime viewers will know we've not taken sponsorships on the channel in years now, as we tend to maintain our focus on the Patreon and all the incredible support you've all provided to the work that we do.In the case of this particular video, to be frank, we've spent more money on getting this thing made than we've ever spent on anything before now. In this case, we needed to:

Fly Quinns and myself over to Michigan for the best part of a week

Hire an additional camera operator

Set up drone shots and time lapses of the map being constructed

Hire a large enough community space to build this crazy thing over three days

Rent a guest house to stay in

Hire a car to travel around Michigan

Feed three men in the United States of America

And that's without accounting for the enormous scale of the edit we then ended up with back home.Anyway, to get this thing over the line, we took a sponsorship with the streaming platform, which helped us pay for just over half of these expenses, or thereabouts. In exchange, we also created a bespoke, companion video that Nebula viewers can watch over there as of today. However, when we were negotiating this with Nebula, I wanted to make it clear that our patrons are the lifeblood of everything we do and even if you don't have a Nebula sub, I wanted you all to be able to watch this extra video as well. This isn't usually something that Nebula goes for, but in the end, we agreed that we'll able to share that companion piece with our patrons in exactly two weeks time. So look our for a post then, if you'd like to watch it as well.If you already have a Nebula sub, you can watch that companion video here, today.Or if you'd like to sign up for one, using our link, you can do so here.If not, we'll be sending it out in a post on Monday, 29th June.

I love Nebula and they support so many creators I enjoy watching. Highly recommend anyone on the fence to get a sub.

Just signed up now and what an amazing video to start of with. Looking forward to what else you guys will be making 😁

This man is cutely insane. As a hobby!

Exomag

Thank you for the amazing video! It is very inspiring and moving, and we’re proud to be patrons and to support this material.

You wonderful game nerds were so perfectly equipped to make this documentary, it's incredible. Thank you for bringing us this beautiful story.

David Lomax

I sat and watched this with a grin on my face and a tear in my eye. Oh to have a fraction of Jerry’s contentedness. Well done to your whole team, that was magnificent

Dominic Carter

Thank you Chris and Quinns for going to the effort of doing this mighty video for the channel

Jeremy Saunders

This is basically outsider art. What a wonderful project and such a great film.

Kieran Wasylyshyn

I've been struggling for a while trying to find the creative energy to pursue my personal projects, and this definitely gave me a huge boost of inspiration. So incredible to see what can come from small persistent effort. I tend to try to do everything in grand bursts, but I love Jerry's attitude toward systemic creativity, while also allowing himself to deviate and mutate the formula as he sees fit. Awesome documentary you guys. Really knocked it out of the park.

People Make Games

Thanks Dominic, although I should also highlight Anni here as well. She's responsible for the vast majority of the edit and has spent more time pouring over all this footage than anybody else!

Heather

Wow, this is an incredible video. The look on Jerry's face when you described the concept of lore! The panels and cards are such incredible art objects showing the power of simple rules and systems

Game Dev Guide

This was so, so good to watch and a fascinating study from a game design perspective. I appreciate you guys doing stuff like this so much.

First of all, what a terrific video, it might be my favourite so far. My main emotion was confused for at least the first half, but I almost cried at the end with the beautiful remarks of Jerry and Meg about how they viewed the importance of this map. And: I'm very thankful the bonus video will come here as well, since I don't follow that many creators and I would rather increase my donation here than sub on Nebula, even though I'm very happy they allowed you to make this video and I think they are doing lovely work.

Dominic Carter

Thank you to Anni as well for going to the effort of editing most of the footage from the trip and going through said footage with a fine tooth comb to make it look as good as it does, magnificent efforts from all involved and what a story it tells.

Jonathan Beckham

Phenomenal video! Sharing this with all my urban planning and geography colleagues - I'm now keeping an eye on Jerry's website so I can see this in person the next time it's on exhibit. Without a doubt my favorite video y'all have made. Thank you!

John Frazer

I gotta be honest: when I saw the title, I wasn't sure if this one was for me. I wasn't even sure if it was a good video for People Make GAMES! I mean, 47 about a map?! But I gave it a chance, cos PMG can't be wrong, can they? And, holy crap! What a video! Such an enjoyable story to follow with you. Thank you Quinns and PMG for making this happen!

Ross

What a fascinating and beautiful video - pumped for the update video. Totally fair on the Nebula wait time front, personally I'm a big fan of channels I like getting bigger budgets from having ads from non gross companies
