Help me pick a sci-fi movie to watch!

Love a poll with no bad choices, but I'm hoping for a Contact win here. For Carl.

Philip Davetas

Lots of good choices here. You'd probably really dig HITCHHIKERS, but it's not doing well on this poll.

WinkNudgeNudge

Oh man! Too many choices! I think you're probably gonna have to roll this one out a second or even third time based on those options! Haha

Doug

Some good films on this one. 🙂 If I had to pick “the best” movie it might be Ex Machina, that one is really great! But honestly there’s a bunch here I like quite a bit so whoever wins it’ll probably be a fun watch.

Randee Carreno

Happy Thursday, Addie! 😊 A great list for this week's poll. However, I easily voted for "Mars Attacks". One of my all-time favorites with a great cast. Have a great day today! 😊

Adrian Towers

Thought provoking, Creepy, intense and the rest are not

Alex Tan

Happy Thursday, Addie. All are good choices but my votes belong to Mars Attacks! (1996), Contact (1997), Minority Report (2002), Oblivion (2013), and Gravity (2013), basically a slightly larger half.

Steve SG-1

I think District 9 (2009) would be a great addition.

Michael Tucker

A lot of great choices. I picked Ex-Machina

Chris

I really hope Ex Machina wins 🙌 That and Annihilation are both such amazing sci-fi films from the same director

Jeff I.

Yeah, District 9 really gets slept on by reactors.

Doug

FYI She’s already watched Independence Day

Michael O'Connor

Other sci-fi you might enjoy: Battle Star Galactica Movie and tv series. Only one season. Buck Rodgers Movie and TV season. Only two seasons. 2nd season is hit and miss. Heavy Metal, the cartoon, Rock and Roll Punk Sci-Fi Musical. 🎶 80s for sure! WILD RIDE so be ready. They really hit the gas in this one. Enjoying your original Planet of Apes 🦍 Reviews! There is a TV show too. P.S. it's only POTA if the monkeys are wearing pants.

Doug

I’d second that one for a future poll. 👍

Byrd N. Hand

How about another fantasy poll one of these days?

Doug

Yeah, I think it’s maybe because the movies not quite as good as the book or radio series (it’s only 61% on Rotten Tomatoes). 🤷‍♂️ It’s not bad, but Mars Attacks is probably the more popular sci-fi comedy film. P.S. And yeah, if you can find it to listen to, that radio series from way back when was great!

Brandon Gibbs

Then she should see the 2016 sequel!

Brandon Gibbs

Independence Day Resurgence (2016)

Philip Davetas

I read whatever the book was back in the day, but it wasn't complete. I watched the BBC series. Haven't done the radio plays. MARS ATTACKS has a lot of funny things in it though.

KingGoji94

Pacific rim, lets start some kaiju movies

Jon Anderson

Good selection! I went for Mars Attacks, just because it's a great movie for jaws hitting floors.

HeyHeyJK

Such a fantastic sci-fi film that is still criminally underrated.

zynjams

worst movie ever

zynjams

claustrophobic nightmare

zynjams

Mars Attacks because Pierce Brosnan is in it.

Chris Brown

I suggest watching the best fun/humorous movie (Mars Attacks, Hitchhiker) and one "serious" one.

Doug

You misspelled Tom Jones. 😉

Doug

(Technically “we got a freaking kaiju up in this shit” recently, but I get it. 😄)

Archive23

They’re all great imo.

Aldo Gonzales

How is The Day After Tomorrow not winning? And what do we have to do to get you to watch Kingsman?

Julian San

I picked Ex Machina because I want to see Addie “tear up the dance floor.”

Doug

I haven’t seen Day After Tomorrow but it’s 45% on Rotten Tomatoes so it must be hit or miss for some people. 🤷‍♂️

Doug

I don’t think I can bring myself to call Mars Attacks a fantastic film or anything, but some parts of it are pure gold! 😄

Doug

Yeah, if I remember right the BBC TV series had mostly the same cast as the radio series it was based on. (In fact the radio series was the original format, the books and TV series were based on it.)

JAKH

For future sci-fi polls: "Alien Nation" (1988) "John Carter" (2012) "Battle: Los Angeles" (2011) the one with Aaron Eckhart, not the one with Nia Peeples "The 6th Day" (2000) "The Final Countdown" (1980) "The Running Man (1987) "Outland" (1981)

JAKH

For a fantasy poll: "Bright" (2017) "Ladyhawke" (1984)

The Amazing Webhead

Hope Pacific Rim wins. It be a great way to see if we get reactions to Godzilla (2014) to start the Monsterverse or Minus One

Rey

Man, you're about to have a 6 way tie on your hands 😅

zynjams

you misspelled Jim Brown

Geoffrey T. Blackwell

The fact that The Day After Tomorrow is out-polling anything is a travesty.

Casey Ryback

9 months to watch all of them

MrAustincummings

I voted minority report, but but I do think you'll like the top 4.

Jacob King

For anyone curious it’s spelled d a n n y d e v i t o

Jacob King

The Hitchhiker’s lore is all versions of the story are canon in an infinitely improbable universe.

Doug

This is a close one for sure! Pretty much a three way tie right now.

Alex Vazquez

Pitch Black Dark City Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Cut 2010 Enemy Mine Outland Upgrade Looper Cloud Atlas Dredd

Julian Pamplin

So proud of this community for putting Minority Report in the lead at this point.

Byrd N. Hand

I personally think it's one of Spielberg's more overrated films, but I'll nonetheless watch Addie's reaction to it.

Byrd N. Hand
>>169102655

Pam Grier. Annette Bening. Jack Black. Michael J. Fox. Sylvia Sidney. Martin Short. Lukas Haas. Natalie Portman. The list goes on...

Byrd N. Hand
>>169098232

Yeah, it's tied with "Alice in Wonderland" as my second least favorite Tim Burton film (I only like his "Planet of the Apes" redo less), but I have to say that watching some of these reactors watch it has made me appreciate it at least a *little* more.

Julian Pamplin

“Overrated” is a short and telling way of saying “I didn’t like it as much as most other people did.” But, instead of recognizing subjectivity and being humble, people place their tastes as the ultimate arbiter and categorize or “rate” things according to theirs as the standard.

Doug

The fact I think Minority Report is fairly reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes at 89% but it’s also not even in my top 5 Spielberg films list is a testament to how great a director he is.

justin swan

I personally didnt care too much for it but it's a well made movie and full of action

justin swan

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Is the epitome of Science Fiction ... That's not to say these are all good movies ... My next favorite would be Contact (Addie would really like I think)! ... Than Oblivion, but as I can see it's very low vote lol, yet it's such a cool, clever, logical movie haha ... Have a good day ery1 :)

justin swan

May I also suggest: Shutter Island, for a future poll ... Very good movie! :D

Jeff I.

Addie, I think you should go into "Mars Attacks", if you watch it, knowing that it's much more of a silly, dark comedy than a typical science-fiction movie. Yes, there's aliens, but that's about as sci-fi as it gets.

zynjams

you misspelled Slim Whitman

Byrd N. Hand
>>169184463

... or you simply don't let general consensus dictate your opinion about something because you genuinely don't agree with it... 🤷‍♂️

Henkan

...Really? I don't want to step on any toes here, but it's a really messy movie, and 90% of it falls completely flat, in my opinion - Which is emblematic of Burton.

Jeff I.

Oh, I agree. It didn't work for me at all, and I didn't laugh at anything in it. I just wanted to kind of set her expectations for the overall tone of the movie, since she might get confused going into it thinking it's a traditional sci-fi movie.

Milton Reduxed

The Day Before 2 Days After Yesterday is a guilty pleasure

Doug

Yeah sometimes Burton's movies are hit or miss, but he does have some solid ones under his belt (e.g. Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and Beetlejuice are all quite good) I personally put Mars Attacks in the "decent" category. It's hit or miss but it also has some really funny, memorable parts to it.

Jasmyne

U should totally watch superman 3 or top gun 1 and 2

Henkan

Burton didn't direct Nightmare though, that was Selick :)

Jeff I.

Hey Addie, just want to throw a quick recommendation for the new Netflix series Adolescence. It's only four episodes so it wouldn't take too long, and it's truly an amazingly well done series. The acting, the dialogue, the camerawork (each episode is one long take) is all amazing.

Brian Nix

I vote for Edge of Tomorrow
