My reaction to Liar Liar will be up tomorrow! Help me choose a sci fi movie to watch next!

Gattaca all day. All. Day.

Alex Tan

Happy Thursday, Addie. My votes belong to Gattaca (1997), Oblivion (2013) and Tenet (2020).

Michael Saville

A Clockwork Orange is pretty crazy, even by today’s standards. In the 70s it was really disturbing to a lot of people

John A

Clockwork Orange is one of the most overrated movies of all time. Yes, you can handle it despite these people trying to coddle you, but I'd bet my life you wouldn't like it

Adrian Duenas

I’m rooting for District 9! One of my top favorite sci-fi movies 🤞

Joseph Voigt

District 9 is the answer, it is in fact required. Period.

John A

District 9 is the first part of a sort of stylistic trilogy where the movies share a certain directorial aesthetic and location similarities but don't share any other canonical similarities, other than a few Easter eggs. The director and creator swears they aren't in the same universe but what the hell does he know. Chappie, the third film, is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine but I can see why people would hate it. Pretty sure you'd find it heartwarming enough to enjoy though

Joeheg758

I'm voting for District 9, but it's really weighing on my conscience.

The Dude Abides

I don’t know if Addie is ready for A Clockwork Orange. I’m going with Pacific Rim

Randee Carreno

Happy Thursday, Addie! 😊 All great choices for this sci-fi poll. I ended up voting for "Tenet". With "District 9" as my second choice. Have a great day today! 😊

Doug

Wow this is a tough poll, almost all of these are really good movies! I think Real Steel and Hitchhikers Guide are the two weakest entries, but everything else is great. Of the rest the only one that Addie might not like is Clockwork Orange mainly because it’s got some icky scenes, but beyond that it’s a really solid, unique film. (I definitely think it’s a more exciting film than 2001 for instance.)

Tom W.

It is overrated. That movie would have been just as good as a 20 minute short.

Doug

On a tangent, I’d probably suggest Memento before Tenet as far as Nolan’s films go. Tenet is a good movie but I kind of like Memento as a story a bit better. Memento isn’t sci-fi though so it makes sense not to be on the poll, but it would be a good one for a suspense thriller poll probably. 🙂

StonedTrunks

I’m rootin for pacific rim cause i love kaiju films #WhereGodzillaAt!

Franco V.

District 9 is an important film because of the themes and social commentary but I don't think it's a very entertaining movie. For a great reaction I prefer Looper or Pacific Rim.

Matt

Real Steel was underseen and a lot of fun, but Pacific Rim is the best :)

Doug

Agree to disagree, I think it’s one of Kubrick’s most unusual films in terms of its story and aesthetic and I find think it’s more entertaining as a film than 2001 for example. I think its 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is perfectly fair for example, especially given some people are turned off by its creepier scenes. Personally, as far as Kubrick goes, I think I rank The Shining as my favorite, then A Clockwork Orange with Full Metal Jacket a close third, then probably 2001 (it drags but it’s visually maybe his best film). I’m not a fan of Eyes Wide Shut or Dr Strangelove. (And its been way too long since I saw Spartacus for me to remember that one.) He has a few others I haven’t seen but that’s basically it.

Joe Blankenship

Hitchhikers Guide and District 9 would hit very different sides of the Sci-Fi spectrum.

Robert da Spruce

Oblivion is probably my favorite on the list. Gattaca is also good Paul is hilarious! If you’re looking for a laugh Addie Real Steel is a bit of a guilty pleasure 😊

LaserLamb

Addie will only be ready for A Clockwork Orange when she gets a whole brain transplant.

Zachary Kosanovich

Pacific rim has giant robots fighting giant monsters!

Flounder

My vote for funny science fiction is What Planet Are You From. I believe the director is the same guy who did The Graduate. Great cast. Here is the trailer: https://youtu.be/vzK6h_OIyEk It’s a must see in my book

Flounder

I agree about Memento versus tenet. Tenant is one of those movies where after you watch it you’re scratching your head about what just happened. I’ve watched like two hours of videos on YouTube that try to explain it, but I still don’t get the time travel thing the way they do it.

CloudSSj4

A lot of interesting titles in this poll. 'A Clockwork Orange' is probably the best overall; followed by 'District 9', 'Gattaca', and 'Pacific Rim'.

Doug

Yeah I like Tenet, it's a cool sort of premise and way to tell a story, even though it doesn't always make a lot of sense. I think of it as the whole movie, including the title, is a palindrome, with the first half going from one point to another and then then the second half mostly going backward toward the beginning again, with some other similar loops sprinkled in. But yeah, it does lend itself to feeling less "real" and more confusing than, for instance, Memento which also has a very usual narrative structure but still manages to tell a more realistic seeming story in the process. P.S. Oppenheimer is another Nolan film where he messes around with the timeline in telling the story, hopping back and forth a lot between Oppenheimer's work on the bomb and his later testimony before the security committee. I think this is unfortunately, though, an example of how experimenting with the narrative structure doesn't actually help tell the story, it more gets in the way of it. Oppenheimer is a good film I'd consider even better if it had a more typical use of its timeline. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How is Clockwork Orange sci fi???

Adrian Duenas

It takes place in a dystopian future

Jeff I.

District 9 is so good! Looking forward to that one if it stays in first.

Michael Saville

That it does but it’s kind of a hard movie to define definitively. Especially compared to sci-fi movies

LaserLamb

I mean, she's gonna have to be a completely different person to be ok with that movie, in other words, it'll never happen. If she did watch it, at the very least, she would say, "It's not for me." That's just Addie, no shade on her whatsoever.

LaserLamb

I'd say it's more science fact than science fiction.

Tim Boxall

HHG2TG is nowhere near as good as the old BBC series though (particularly the cell animation)

Tim Boxall

District 9 is a unique film, both action and deeply thought provoking (and little Christopher is so cute). Gets my vote despite there being loads of first class others here.

Tim Boxall

Little Christopher is adorable!

Tim Boxall

For Hitchhikers Guide, try the old BBC series - shonky special effects aside it's way better IMHO, and also captures the real Britishness of Adams original books/radio series

John A

Dystopia doesn't mean Sci fi so I don't agree with it either. Plus I'm just not a fan lol

John A

I'm convinced people only say they like Clockwork Orange to try to convince everyone that they're a cinophile. I'm half kidding of course because I don't like it myself, but it's so hard to see it as this cult classic people say they love. I either love or hate Kubrik's style. The Shining is absolutely fantastic, FMJ is great, but I also can't stand 2001. Having read the book right before it might have ruined that for me though because it's light years better

Doug

And even today I think the original radio series is the best version, you could even just listen to that if you wanted. 👍 (Not for the channel obviously, but just because it’s a fun listen.)

Doug

The brainwashing is the sci-fi part.

David Lucas

Hello Addie! My vote goes to Oblivion, Gattaca, and Paul! Oblivion is hands-down one of my favorite sci-fi movies. And yes, before you ask, there is Tom Cruise running. You’re welcome. 😄 Gattaca is such a great sci-fi suspense thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law. It’s one of those stories where the main character beats the odds and chases his dream… super inspiring and really well done. And of course, Paul, featuring one of your favorites, Simon Pegg! A hilarious sci-fi alien movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and will absolutely make you laugh. I think you’ll love it.

Tim Boxall

I regularly binge listen to it. Peter Jones is the definitive voice of the Book. Sorry Stephen Fry...

Rod Summerfield

You ain't ready for clock work orange yet sweetheart

Robb

Best picture nominee DISTRICT 9
