Happy Friday, Addie! 😊 Perfect timing for you to watch this movie with the second one coming out soon. I've pretty much seen most of this movie. This evening will be the perfect time for me to watch the rest along with your reaction. And I know there's the original 1984 movie as well. Have a great day today & a great weekend! 😊

Alex Tan

Happy Friday, Addie. I'm so glad that you have watched Dune (2021). My girlfriend & I watched this movie in IMAX, when it first came out in theaters, and we both enjoyed it. We definitely can't wait to see Dune: Part Two (2024) in IMAX next weekend. It's gonna be awesome.

Behind the Scenes: https://youtu.be/VHYVipdTE8k?feature=shared IMAX comparisons: https://youtu.be/uTK5UQOOvQU?feature=shared https://youtu.be/yqnyksnpnHI?feature=shared . The movie had sequences that were filmed with IMAX-Certified ARRI Alexa LF & Mini LF cameras with the aspect ratio opened up to 1.90:1 & 1.43:1 in IMAX theatres. Dune: Part Two (2024) will be opened up for the entire movie in both 1.90:1 & 1.43:1. I wish that the IMAX sequences of this one were opened up to 16:9 on Blu-ray. It would've been neat. #ReleaseTheIMAXCut

And another Denis Villeneuve movie that I would love to see you watch soon is Sicario (2015), also with Josh Brolin. #SicarioForAddieCounts

Going to go see 'Part 2' in IMAX this Sunday! Next on your sci-fi watch list could be "John Carter" or "Robocop"? You should read Frank Herbert's novel(s), I highly recommend them.

ButtercupsTrueLove

There was a furmans in "Star Wars". His name is Chewbacca.

Alex Tan

Lol. Fremen/Furman.

Alex Tan

I second John Carter (2012). It's an underrated Disney sci-fi movie. #JohnCarterForAddieCounts

Patrick Egan

Agreed, John Carter was very underrated in my opinion. Though to be fair I haven't read the books so maybe the book lovers were unhappy with the adaptation. But I thought Andrew Stanton did a good job directing his first live-action feature. And of course I fell HARD for Lynn Collins as the princess :)

So Addie, the director, Denis Villeneuve hasn't really missed. You saw "Arrival" now, Dune. I want to encourage you to also watch Both Blade Runner Films, the first one Directed by Riddley Scott starring Harrison Ford, (Be sure to watch the directors cut) and Blade Runner 2049 Stars Ryan Gosling, directed by Denis.

Going to watch this right after lunch is done. I haven't watched this movie yet, and the emergence of an Addie reaction to it seems like a great time to do it. I saw the original "Dune" movie on DVD from my dad's collection when I was maybe 11? I barely remember it (and won't say what I do remember so I don't spoil it for people who haven't seen it). But I really didn't like it at the time. Having said that, my dad assures me that a lot of my dislike was just because I was too young for it, and I never did give it a second watch when I was older to see if I could appreciate it more. Might have to watch it again just for curiosity's sake. Anyway, I'm glad you decided to do this movie, and I look forward to watching along as soon as I'm not busy with preparing or eating lunch!

Alex Tan

You meant The 2007 Final Cut. I also encourage Addie to watch Sicario (2015) & Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), both with Benicio Del Toro & Josh Brolin. The first one is directed by Denis Villeneuve and also stars Emily Blunt. The second one is directed by Stefano Sollima and also stars Isabela Merced. #SicarioForAddieCounts

What a great surprise! I saw your notification when I checked my email at work and ended up hardly being able to work because I was so excited to get home to watch it with you.

Thank you for your wonderful reaction to "Dune"! I've read Frank Herbert's first "Dune" novel. It's excellent. I re-read it after I saw David Lynch's interpretation of "Dune" (1984) and it helped me to visualize the worlds and the characters. Personally, if a person's first encounter with "Dune" is Denis Villeneuve's film, I would wait for his follow-up film(s) before reading the novel. I wonder if the character Jamis will return in some form in "Dune: Part Two". The way Jamis appeared in Paul's visions seemed to indicate a benevolent presence that would help guide Paul on his journey on Arrakis. Apparently, Rebecca Ferguson had not read "Dune" before taking the role as Jessica and asked late night host Stephen Colbert if her character had a lot to do in the next film and he just smiled and gave a subtle 'affirmative'. She seemed pleased.

Part two coming soon!! This was fantastic and I expect the end to be epic!

I forgot to mention our fav music composer "Hanz Zimmer" does the scores to this film and the 2nd Dune coming out. After he read the books when he was younger he dreamed of making music for dune film and today he got his dreams to come true. One more thing, its hard to tell, but Silgar is played by Javier Bardem. You have seen his acting work before, in a little movie called 'No Country For Old Men" He played the Psychopathic Serial killer.

Kyle Brandon Sanger

Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem were both in 'No Country for Old Men' together.

This is an amazing adaptation so far. As good as LOTR. The main difference storywise from the books is politics. While this movie does go into the politics some, the book really dives into how it all works. There are some other differences too. For instance, Jessica here is much softer than book Jessica. She's still a badass, but not as much in control of her emotions. Though in public she's fully in control. Still any adaptation is going to take liberties in order to tell a more visual story. One really great scene from the book didn't make it to the movie. But I get it. It wouldn't have fit well with the pacing. Dune (1984) movie didn't include it either. Once you get to Arrakis the story really needs to move. This movie was an experience! I highly recommend watching it on a big screen and great sound system if you ever get the chance. I am eagerly awaiting the release of Part 2 next week!!

Just realized there are tons of Marvel actors here: Josh Brolin - Gurney Halleck - Thanos/Cable Zendaya - Chani - MJ Oscar Isaac - Duke Leto Atreides - Moon Knight Stellan Skarsgaard - The Baron - Erik Selvig (Thor) Dave Bautista - Rabban - Drax David Dastmalchian - Piter de Vries (the Harkonnen Mentat/advisor) - was in Ant Man (one of Luis's buddies, security company) So many other great recognizable actors as well like Rebecca Ferguson - Jessica - is in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Jason Momoa - Duncan Idaho - from Aquaman and Game of Thrones, Charlotte Rampling - Reverend Mother - has had a long career since the 60's, Javier Bardem - Stilgar - most recognizable from No Country for Old Men, and Timothee Chalamet - Paul - very up and coming from Interstellar and Little Women. Truly a stacked cast!! And a bunch of other recognizable ones will be in Part 2!!

I think a big part of Jessica being more visibly emotional is inherent to the medium and visual storytelling and dont see them as real differences to the character/story etc vs how that has to be shown. And it seems like you largely are saying this, just wanted to expand a bit since I’ve seen a lot of people that go sinfar as saying she doesnt seem strong at all. The film can't narrate the stress of the situations, inner monologue about the stress shes experiencing etc so they have to let her show it at some point (visually and relatively clearly/efficiently). Even then, they do to take care that any time she’s around anyone else that I can think of except Paul (and even with him only when surprised by things he shouldnt know) she is quite clearly shown as controlled. Strength isn’t being afraid, it’s acting as needed in spite of realistic fear and without the narration a book can add, not showing any fear would come across as there being no fear or pressure on her at all. Showing it tells the audience that huge things are happening -they- should also be worried about and that her calm is an act of will and training to control it. So they use contrast like the anguish she shows walking alone in the corridor before snapping into a calm as she enters the Dukes room to tell him her concerns about Paul. That fear and concern she visually shows about danger the her decisions have caused for her son and for the Duke. I love her portrayal myself.

RocktSurgeon

Early on when Jessica is picking the housekeeper, the reason she signs to the guard to prepare for violence as soon as the knife is drawn from the sheath has more to it than just being a weapon. It being a Kris knife has heavy implications- specifically that once one is drawn Fremen are not supposed to re-sheath it without drawing blood (an opponent or their own) so it is a serious decision to bare the blade in front of someone. That's why the Fremen at the end, after Paul and Jessica initially fight them back, draw their blades across their wrists before resheathing them.

RocktSurgeon

Granted they don't show the Housekeeper blood her blade, but my assumption is the filmmakers did it to simplify an already more complex moment and would say that it's because it was being presented as a gift and that would make it different.

Marty McGee

Yeah that's what I meant. I see a lot of comments in reviews and other reactions saying that Rebecca plays her too emotional. That as a Bene Gesserit she should be almost emotionless. Almost like a Vulcan. I'll admit when I first saw the scene with her in the hallway while Paul is being tested with the box, I was a little taken aback. But you can see she clearly waits for the other sisters to leave before "breaking down." Then she goes through the mantra and masters herself again. I like this portrayal of her. Jessica does get emotional in the book. It clouds her judgement at times. So give her some humanity and let her be vulnerable. I like how she can be somewhat herself with Paul and Leto to a lesser extent.

Doug

This one is so much better than the 1980's film. 👍 Aside from the downside of it ending on a "to be continued..." it's pretty terrific. Also I can't watch the Box scene without thinking of the Elmo spoof. 😄 https://youtu.be/EHK5fBm1YWk?si=5um2_atdH5DPR7Vz

Michael Short

I like to read the books after the movies, because 9 times out of 10 if I read the books before, no matter how well they adapt it to film, I will be disappointed.

RocktSurgeon

I always really liked the 80s Dune.. but wow, the difference after seeing Villineuve's version is shocking. Granted there's a huge improvement of technique and technology in the time between then, and Lynch did some really innovative stuff as well, but still this one is just so much better.

DazzMetalStorm

Dune was an incredible new experience for me. Saw it the first time this week. Looking Forward to seeing Part 2 tomorrow. Thank you for your reaction 🎬
