PATREON EXCLUSIVE REACTION: L.A. Confidential  We're taking it back to the 1950s Golden Era of Hollywood in this month's Legend's Movie Pick with L.A. Confidential. For anyone unfamiliar with the Legend's Pick, this is where each member of the Legends Tier can suggest a favorite movie of any era or genre for me to watch, and then a winning suggestion is chosen at random for a Patrons Only reaction.

I would like to extend a big CONGRATULATIONS to Legend *Calbah* for being this month's winner! I found L.A. Confidential to be a very well-crafted story that delved into the corruption of L.A.'s finest and produced an Academy Award-winning performance by Kim Basinger. In addition to Basinger, the entire cast was incredibly stellar, and I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

I've provided the unblurred version up top via Streamable (just click the photo thumbnail), and the link for the blurred YouTube version can be found here: https://youtu.be/w2u2fgfGWEw. For those watching the YouTube version, remember that you'll need your own copy to sync up.

Thanks again to Calbah and ALL of you incredible Patrons for your support! I hope that you enjoy this reaction :)

Glad you enjoyed it. This movie was when I first noticed Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis starting to play American leads. It was Simon Baker's first film role. Love that you clocked him and knew Ron Rifkin by name. Kevin Spacey is super-problematic these days, but I think every actor should study his death scenes. You can see the moment that life leaves his eyes. I think this movie has the best example of it. They stay on his face for such a long time too. Honestly, I don't agree that Kim Basinger deserved the Academy Award (over Julianne Moore in Boogie Nights, Joan Cusack in In and Out, Gloria Stuart in Titanic, and Minnie Driver in Good Will Hunting?). I think the person who actually deserved it was Sigourney Weaver in The Ice Storm who didn't even get nominated. No one from this movie but Basinger got nominated for an acting Oscar or Golden Globe, which is a crime. Two fun facts for you: 1. Lana Turner really did date Johnny Stompanato. Her daughter Cheryl stabbed him to death after hearing him threaten the lives of Lana, Cheryl, and Lana's mother while they were fighting over the fact that Lana didn't take him as her date to the Oscars that night. A lot of people thought Lana actually killed him and Cheryl took the blame to protect her mother. 2. Guy Pearce's partner for several years now is Carice van Houten who played Melisandre on GOT! They have a son together who apparently is not a shadow demon. 🤣 It was very strange to hear you say my screen name out loud (you did a good job pronouncing it btw), primarily because it means bitch in Hebrew. Feel free to call me Deborah in the future if you want (Hebrew for bee, which is slightly less offensive). Hope you are enjoying your weekend! 🌈❤️

This was among the first DVDs I owned. The format hadn't been around very long. I didn't have a TV in my bedroom, but I did have a computer that had a DVD player in it and would usually fall asleep watching a movie. Unfortunately, that meant waking up to whatever audio played over the menu on a loop with no remote to turn it off. In the case of L.A. Confidential, it was Danny DeVito's opening voiceover! After having that annoying experience a few times, I frequently put on Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. That had k.d. lang singing Skylark over the menu on a pretty seamless loop. Don't like the movie as much, but way better to wake up to! 😎

Starman Deluxe

This should have won best picture for 1997. But Titanic basically swept the it. Also, an amazing recent film Kim Basinger has been in more recent is "The Nice Guys". It's a Comedy/Thriller staring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling

Oh my God so much good stuff to unpack from your comment!!! This is one of those rare times when I almost would have rather you told me all this from the outset so that I would know while watching (well not all- I wouldn't have wanted the Spacey death scene to be spoiled haha). But yeah, ok so.. - Re: the Brits, Aussies and Kiwis.. nary an accent detected, at least by my neophyte ears, so I thought they all did great! The only accent I even heard was James Cromwell's Irish, who is American, so I assumed that was intentional - I need to go back and watch the Spacey death scene again to appreciate the moment you mentioned. Also, side note about that scene with my editing- I actually thought the movie got hung up when I was putting the video together because of how long the camera holds on him. I wasn't remembering it being that long, and I thought my video got stuck lol. - Yes to Ice Storm!!! I watched that movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. And I loooove Sigourney Weaver in everything, so I agree with you there about at least getting a nomination. But yeah, with Kimmy, that was one of my theories, that she was a "Marisa Tomei My Cousin Vinny" winner. Not to take anything away from MT, of course, but I understand that's a theory about her win- that her year was a highly competitive one when the vote was really split, and she benefitted from that split. - About Johnny Stompanado's death.. even though I'm not celebrating death or anything, I love dramatic true crime stories like this! Thank you for sharing :) - Guy Pearce/Melisandre.. WHAATTTT????????? That's crazy!! But I love those kind of connections!

David vs. Film

Hahahaha that's hilarious. Now with Midnight in the Garden.., maybe it's because I grew up in the South or maybe because the movie just hit me the right, but that one has always been a favorite of mine :)

David vs. Film

Hey thank you!! I was wondering what she'd been in lately, and I remember hearing about that movie (by title, but not much about it). And yeah, I remember Titanic dominating that year in just about everything except the actual acting awards lol.

Jude Law's accent in that one, not exactly on par with the performances in L.A. Confidential. Also, Kevin Spacey's was apparently way off because he prepared by listening to tapes of Jim Williams during his third trial without realizing he was on Valium. 😂 Lady Chablis is my favorite. I would have watched her do a one-woman show of the whole movie.

Calbah

If you were Guy Pearce, tell me you wouldn't have some anxiety in the delivery room while Melisandre is giving birth to your kid. 😬

Calbah

Definitely put The Nice Guys on your list. Such a fun movie!
