'SUP Awesome Patrons! BIG BIG FUN in Little Houston last night as Marc and I FINALLY got to watch this iconic Kurt Russell movie! John Carpenter succeeded once again with this blend of cheesy humor and spot-on 80s practical effects against the backdrop of a supernatural, sci-fi eyefest.

Here is our unedited, full-length reaction to Big Trouble in Little China, and we would love it if you watch along with us. Definitely be sure to let us know your thoughts if you do! I've provided the unblurred version up top via Streamable (just click the photo thumbnail), and the link for the blurred, watchalong version can be found herehttps://youtu.be/kUQXLjHgkSA. For those watching the blurred version, remember that you'll need your own copy of the episode to sync up.

Thanks as always for your incredible support, and I hope you have a great rest of the day/night!

I’m out running errands, but I am so excited that you finally got to see this. Can’t wait to watch later. Hope you enjoyed it!

Definitely watch again someday if you get a chance. You guys talked over a few of the best lines. The way Lo Pan says "indeed!" is probably the thing I quote the most, which you also seemed to enjoy. The other one I use a lot from that same scene is when he sees Eddie, Margo, and Gracie on the monitors and tells Jack and Wang "now this really pisses me off to no end." That one I think you talked over. Other stuff: The Three Storms are called Thunder, Rain, and Lightning. I'm not sure if you ever hear Rain and Lightning called by their names. The actor who played Rain loved that hair. According to him, it was a $3000 wig. Worth it, right!? If you get a minute, go check out the IMDb page for the actor who played Lightning. I think you may be right that he's gay. His photos are something else. The best way I can describe it is as a combination of Johnny Depp, Harry Shum, Jr., Magnum P.I. (not Tom Selleck, Thomas Magnum), and Liberace. He was inspired to be a martial artist by watching Bruce Lee, but he was also inspired to be a ballet dancer by watching Rudolf Nureyev. He must be a fascinating person. I have so much more I could say, but most of it you could probably find if you read the trivia section of the movie's IMDb page. There are three I'll mention here. First, when Lightning gets bonked on the head at the end and the blue lightning slowly dies away through the hole, the last thing you see if you look closely is the lightning forming a Chinese character. It translates to "carpenter." Love that little easter egg. Second, the scene with Egg Shen at the very beginning was added after the studio bosses didn't think Jack seemed heroic enough. So, they want to set him up as a big hero right at the start even though Carpenter's goal was to try to subvert expectations about who is the hero. There are lots of films and TV shows where the white hero has a sidekick who is a person of color. With the exception of killing Lo Pan with his amazing reflexes, Jack is bombastic (I was born ready. Ol' Jack always says "what the hell," son of a bitch must pay, etc.) with very little to back it up, which is hilarious as we watch Wang Chi kick a ton of ass. Finally, I thought it was funny that when the movie ended, The Golden Child was next up. BTILC was released in summer of 1986 (and went into production a little quicker than planned) because they heard The Golden Child was being released at Christmas the same year. Victor Wong (Egg Shen), James Hong (Lo Pan), and Peter Kwong (Rain) were also in The Golden Child as The Old Goupa, Dr. Hong, and Tommy Tong, respectively. If you haven't seen that one, it's just as fun and quotable. Thank you so much for this reaction! It made my week. Love you guys!

Ok, I lied. More facts. The girl who played Tara (Min Luong) was the female lead in the Christian Slater skateboarding movie Gleaming the Cube. Peter Kwong who played Rain was a bad guy in that movie as well. He is not the only one who was in both movies and The Golden Child. There is a stunt man named Jeff Imada who is in all of them (there's like a 10% chance that if you name a movie from the 80s or 90s that involved stunts, he's in it). And possibly the best of the Wing Kong baddies is played by Al Leong (also a Golden Child stuntman). He's the guy with the hatchet who is the first Wing Kong you see heading toward the funeral. That fabulous hair (both head and facial) was in Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and played frickin' Genghis Khan in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Now I'm forcing myself to stop. 😉😂❤️

UGH, so sorry!! When we really like a movie and are having fun like in this one, we get chatty :-/ It was SO GOOD though!!! I'd definitely watch again just for sheer enjoyment of it, honestly! You were 100% right! I seriously almost made a comment about Rain's hair being donated to some very lucky wig maker once he met his end. It was beautiful, yes! lol. Also, it's so funny that you mention that about looking up Lightning because that's the first thing I did after we watched hahaha. I was really just half joking when I said that about him maybe being gay (and I'll probably leave that out of the YouTube edit lol), but he for sure had some moves. And speaking of moves.. I love that referenced Harry Shum Jr! I feel like no one really knows him, and he is someone that I have LOVED since the Glee days. I'm sure you've already seen the YouTube videos of him dancing and doing stunts, but if you haven't, check them out. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TRIVIA!! You know how much I love that, and I'll be sure to share these little tidbits with Marc. One thing I'll add is that I looked up Victor Wong because he looked familiar to me but I couldn't place him. He was the convenience store owner in Tremors! I loved him in that, even though I didn't immediately place him. Thank you again so much for heralding this movie and for sharing your thoughts, my sweet friend!

lol I love that you know so much about these actors and stunt folks! A wealth of knowledge ;) So did you say that you do recommend watching The Golden Child? I think I had someone recommend that movie to me way back, but I kind of forgot about it. That's one that would be very interesting to me because (like this one), I know NOTHING about it except Eddie Murphy and acrobatic stunts lol. And I don't think Marc has seen it either.

Calbah

I don’t love The Golden Child as much as this one, but it’s fun and Eddie Murphy has so many quotable lines in it. I won’t give anything away, but you will definitely like the big baddie in it. Peter Kwong is a baddie in it, as I mentioned, but not the big baddie. I should probably put together a list of movies that were watched at many slumber parties when I was a kid in the 80s. The Golden Child was one of them.

Calbah

I didn’t mean to imply that I’m bothered by you guys talking over good lines. I’m here for your banter! I just want to make sure you know that you’ve missed some good stuff if you ever want to do a rewatch. 😉

Please, you don't even have to explain! I know you better than that by now. Totally followed what you meant :)
