NAOMI THE QUEEN 🫡

Etta Eskridge

This was such a powerful episode in so many ways. I was looking forward to it for literally years as Naomi's hard vacuum leap did happen in the books as well and was just as stunning! There is medical precedent for surviving seconds to minutes in hard vacuum and Naomi used the hyperoxygenated syringe to inject herself and give herself just a little more oxygen in order to complete the transit to the Chetzamoka but her body will have suffered considerable toll. I am so glad you got to see this episode Meg, when you had taken a hiatus I was worried you would never get here and it is so true, in many ways, Naomi is the true hero.

FYI, "Oyedeng" is LangBelta for "goodbye". And yep, NASA has recorded instances of humans surviving vacuum for short periods - death is from brain asphyxiation in about 2 minutes, and you'd likely go unconscious in 30 seconds if you don't hyperventilate beforehand (hence the injection she took) . You don't even freeze (like in that Mission to Mars movie) because there's no air to conduct heat away from you - though you will eventually radiate your heat away. HOWEVER, she did get a nasty sunburn on the sun-lit side of her body and got a dose of raw unfiltered radiation, and the boiling of gases in her bloodstream probably gave her a lot of very painful tissue damage. Survivable, but fuck me that's going to hurt just moving.

Hiya, Meg! You know, I really don't know the details of what you went through with your family dysfunction (nor should any of us, that's your private business), but you've shared enough of it that I was a bit worried going into Season 5 that some of what was to come might be hard for you watch - "triggering," or whatever word you want to use. But seeing your reaction to this story has been eye-opening to say the least. It's clear that you understand these emotions and these abusive dynamics very well, at least in part, I assume, because you've been there. But you also, despite the empathy you always show, seem to be dealing with this stuff with incredible strength, a strength that I don't know that I could have if I were in a similar situation. Your insights have been illuminating, for sure, but beyond that, your ability to be so clear-eyed about it and not have it affect you personally too much is just really impressive. Would it be presumptuous of me to say I'm proud of you? It seems you've come a long way. I'm sure you have bad days to go along with the good ones (as we all do), but especially these days, in these (sorry for the cliche) troubling times, it's heartening to see someone rise above it and not just survive, but thrive. It gives me hope for humanity at a time when that hope has been really challenged. Thank you for that. Everybody else has already talked about the story elements here, so I won't bother repeating them. Especially since you "got" it pretty much right away. Great reaction, as always. Can't wait until Episode 8!

Not presumptuous at all in my opinion. Just a wonderful compliment I will hold with me :) thank you so much.

Mage Reacts

Wooooooooow. Yes, they really thought it through. OMG

@Etta, you're an MD, right? I was wondering about the medical accuracy (or not) of "hyperoxygenated blood" as a treatment for hypoxia. Is it an actual thing? Or is it at least something we could envision existing in the near future? I also wonder about the efficacy it would have in Namoi's case, where she injected it into her leg. Monica got her dose on the side of her neck, near her brain. But how long does it take medication introduced into someone's thigh to have any kind of systemic effect? How "fringe" is this science, in other words? It sounds plausible to me, but only kind of barely so.
