First of all, absolutely loved that the very obvious title flew right over my head 🤣

Secondly, this was SO GOOOD!! This origin is epic--STAS did such a good job of incorporating Green Lantern into the universe! I love Kyle :') and love his artist background even more.

Oh I was waiting so bad for this episode since this is a really good one! Kyle Rayner is the 5th human Green Lantern in the comics and while Hal Jordan is regarded as the best Green Lantern, Kyle is considered the best Lantern of all time. I don't really want to say why because it does involve the other Lantern Corps that you have not been introduced to yet. Though I will say one of the reasons why Kyle is one of the best Lanterns among fans is due to him being an artist, he has created some of the craziest and coolest constructs out of all the Lanterns. From huge mech robots to kaiju monsters. Like it's insane the things he has created. Weirdly though, they made him look like Hal Jordan giving him brown hair as Kyle usually has black hair and also a completely different suit. They also gave him Hal’s origin with Abin Sur crash landing and having his ring choose Kyle instead of the usual origin being Hal. Not sure why they couldn't use Hal. Though it could be because Kyle was the main Green Lantern by this point in the 90's and early 2000's so that probably is the reason why. Also they even reference Hal Jordan's name on one of the jets. Also this is the first time we see Sinestro in this universe and despite his ring being yellow, this was actually before DC had ever established the Sinestro Corps/Yellow Lanterns. That would be until Geoff Johns' comic run on Green Lantern in 2005-2013 where he not only redid the Green Lanterns but established the other color Lantern Corps and gave them their own origin. It's definitely a great read if you wanna get to know more about the other Lantern Corps. I've heard it feels very similar to Star Wars. But I'm so excited that you're going to be watching Justice League soon and hopefully Batman Beyond once you're finished with STAS. Perfect timing for this holiday season! But thanks again for this wonderful episode Meg! Definitely another reaction I will probably come back to watch every now and then. Also I really hope you play the Injustice games at the same time you start Justice League. I'm really curious to know what you think of the story for those games

Love Kyle, he was the "main" green lantern from the mid 90s to the early 2000s, so that likely played a hand in him being GL in this show. It's a bit odd that they gave him a lot of Hal's backstory, but still neat to see him get a role in something animated. He's a biiiiit notorious for having some incredibly dark things happen to him, though, early warning if you ever dive into his comics.

Oh, and the rules on there being more than one Green Lantern have basically devolved into "There can be as many or as few as that writer wants there to be," to be honest.

I’m gonna watch the reaction but I’m excited for this one. There are about 5 humans who gain a Green Lantern ring in the comics and Kyle is one of them. Someone already mention this but he was the main GL for majority of the 90’s so it’s makes sense the writers bring him in the show. Although in this episode he had Hal Jordan’s backstory. He even has brown hair like Hal whereas in the comics, he had black hair. I don’t why the writers didn’t use Hal but I assume they couldn’t so they used Kyle’s version of GL instead. Despite that, Kyle is a fan favorite Green Lantern from the comics so it was good to see him in the show.

Lol, amazing! I'm actually more interested in knowing his comics are darker; thank you for the warning :) when you say they gave him Hal's backstory, I imagine that's more about Sinestro/Abin Sur rather than him being an artist?

Mage Reacts

Oh that's awesome! Thank you for the info Heroes! I'll have to check out other depictions of Kyle later on stream because you got me interested :)

like tim drake robin and wally west flash before him, Kyle was chosen to be lantern in this episode because he was the primary lantern in the comics at the time. They gave him elements of Hal's origin because its simpler than Kyle's own comic origin but still include a Hal reference with his name on the plane. If we want an explanation for why Kyle is chosen instead of Hal here we can say its because Kyle was closer in proximity. In the comics it was eventually revealed a man named Guy Gardner was also worthy for the ring when Abin died but Hal was closer to Abin's crash site so it choose him instead. Since in this episode Abin crashed close to Metropolis we can assume though Hal was worthy Kyle is closer because he lives in Metropolis. In the comics Kyle is given the ring after the other lanterns rings are all destroyed and the Guardians killed. The last Guardian crashes to earth and is forced to give it to the first person he sees, Kyle, resulting in some early interactions where Kyle has to prove himself worthy despite the Guardian not seeing him as such. Interestingly one of Kyle's first comic stories is in fact a team up with Superman against an alien seeking revenge against Hal, mistaking Kyle for Hal. Kyle is also notable to for being linked to the trope "fridging". When he is introduced he has a girlfriend but in an early story he comes home to discover a villain has killed her and stuffed her body into a fridge. When Gail Simone wrote about the problematic nature of the pattern of killing female characters in service of male character's development in comic books she called the trope Fridging after said Kyle Rayner story with the name sticking.

Oh I think you'll love reading up about him, especially when you look up the constructs he has created

The artist stuff is real (In the comics he almost always goes for very detailed constructs to fit that, too), but the origins of him getting the ring is in the aftermath of a big, messy event in the comics, one that wouldn't line up for what their plans are for the Green Lanterns within the Justice League show later (Can't go into more detail than that without spoilers). I guess their options were to either make up a new origin entirely or lift ideas off of a different lantern.

The green lanterns seem kind of slept on by DC movies and tv. So much story telling potential, but they don't get represented much in stories even in animated form. I always thought they were interesting, but I really don't know much about them except for the animated movies and justice league, and casual wikipedia browsing.

Brandon Gibbs

Yeah this GL wasn't Hal Jordan but Kyle Rayner. But who knows? Maybe you will see him again in Justice League TAS/Unlimited very soon. Also maybe you could watch Static Shock along with it cause it does take place around the same time. Just a suggestion

Season 3 starts introducing more and more aspects of Justice League now, but it's not like we skimp on the main characters of this show. The Green Lantern ring has been wielded by all sorts of Earthlings, usually folowing the death of the previous user but not always. A new Lantern is a great way to introduce a new character with a power set we're already familiar with, even if their character flaws may make them very different from the one we're used to.

Glad you loved this episode! You'll have a lot of questions as Justice League starts, but my tip is to wait and keep at it as the show will slowly explain everything.
