Bane (BTAS)

Good reaction! Well the best way to start to know about Bane is to read his debut appearance which is Batman Knightfall which elements were used in The Dark Knight Rises. It’s a big storyline that was huge that they made three volumes. Bane, Joker, and Ra Al Ghul are often the three villains that are up there as the perfect foils to Batman. He’s a interesting character because there are a few instances where he has a code and anti hero moments but still a villain. The man had to serve his dead father prison sentence as an infant. He escaped to fight Batman as the ultimate challenge to prove himself. In a lot of adaptations, Bane is often used as just a brute and never show his intelligence due to his addiction to Venom which is unfortunate cause this episode, Arkham Origins, and Tom Hardy’s version perfectly portrayed him well.

I loved that Robin just fought Candice in the water it cracked me up and they based this episode off of how mexican wrestelers do taking off their mask after a fight is disrespectful so Batman knew what he was doing and he definately is getting more brutal, you'll see this Batman and everyone "age" as you keep going till justice league. The reason they changed the intro is cause everyone wanted more Robin cause they loved the characters soo much

To answer your question about Batman being more serious/brutal is because we’re at a point in the show where Bruce is becoming more like how he acted in the Arkham Games, animated films that you seen, and the comics for a while where he’s more focus on his mission to rid of crime and the fact is, he’s been dealing with so much craziness like facing psychos like Joker and supernatural threats like Clayface and Man Bat on a daily basis and that can take a toll on anyone’s mental health. You’ll see more as you keep watching. When you look back on the games, you’ll notice that Bruce isn’t that phased by whatever he’s fighting at that point. Considering that Batman’s original goal was to stop normal crime but now has to face these kind of problems. It’s why Long Halloween was important because it was the transition of normal crime to supervillain crime becoming the new normal of Gotham.

Always loved Bane. He was actually created as a response to the success of the Death of Superman. DC wanted to give Batman his own Doomsday. In Batman’s case, they wanted to give him someone who was both strong enough and smart enough to beat, or break, him.

Yeah I knew you would be excited for the episode just from the title alone. You are right that this is basically season 3 of BTAS but it being called the Adventures of Batman & Robin with the new intro. If I remember correctly, the reason they changed it was because the studio wanted the show to feature more of Robin. So they decided to rename the show and do a new intro using Shirley Walker's theme, instead of using the original intro with Danny Elfman's theme. As others are saying, Bane had to serve his dead father's sentence at Peña Duro prison with the only company he had being a teddy bear named Osito and while there would have nightmares of bats. As he got older and started to learn about Batman, he felt that it was his destiny to take on Batman and in a way vanquish his fear of bats. It is unfortunate that Bane in most adaptations is seen more as a brute and not really using his intelligence as much. The reason to why he's not really shown to be that smart in some other adaptations is due to his addiction to the Venom drug and the effects it has on the mind. I believe in Arkham Origins, when you stumble onto his hideout, you can see that he was experimenting and figuring out a way to still use Venom without having to worry about the side effects. But I'd say if you combine elements of both Tom Hardy's version and the Bane in Arkham Origins, that is probably the perfect version of Bane since it highlights his intelligence, his South American background, and his use of the Venom drug. Oh and during the fight between Batman and Bane towards the end of the episode, the way Batman was somehow bouncing off the metal bar like a rope and taking Bane down with his legs, I believe was inspired by luchador wrestling or lucha libre. I think that's actually where the inspiration came for his original mask since it looks similar to a lot of luchador wrestlers' masks. Oh and the scene where Batman stabs Bane's injections and the Venom leaks all over him and basically overloads him with the drug, that is sort of in reference to Batman Knightfall, Bane's comic debut, where he and Batman fight and at the end Bane breaks Batman's back. Also the reason why Batman seems to be more brutal is as a few are saying here already, he now has to deal with super villains like Killer Croc, Man-Bat, Bane, Poison Ivy, etc., rather than the usual common criminals he deals with. He's also getting much older and I think Bruce is just kind of getting fed up with everything so he doesn't really have time to "joke" and "play" around with his villains like we've seen before. He just wants to get the criminals and be done with it. But as we know, it's a never-ending war in Gotham. I can't wait for you to see the sort of change in Batman as you keep progressing onward through the show, especially when you get to the New Batman Adventures and Batman Beyond

Oh and yeah, they did include Robin more because of a studio mandate to include him more, and yeah, I believe it was because of a movie release that features him.

Also since this episode is the start of season 3 of BTAS, I can't wait for your reaction to the rest of the episodes cause they are back to back bangers in my opinion

Naw

Season 3, WOOO! New intro and outro! The addition of Robin to the title was a note from Warner Bros. trying to make the show more kid-friendly. Numerous factors conspired to make this version of Bane underwhelming compared to the comics version. The producers didn't like the character for how he 'comes out of nowhere' in the comics to break Batman's spine. The comic book version is legendary for that act, but it could never be done justice in the animated series because A) it's too graphic B) it's part of Knightfall (gonna read it? I keep hearing about a film version on the way but not yet), a story arc spanning dozens of issues. Although it was the start of S3 so they COULD have made a serialized arc where Bats does get broken and Robin has to run things while he's recovering... but no. Too dark even for this series. Less serious versions of Bane play up the Mexican Luchador aspect but it can be charming. More annoying is how some versions make Bane nothing but a hulking idiot, forgetting that his sharp intelligence is what defeated Batman. He didn't 'come out of nowhere', he orchestrated a long-term plan to weaken Batman for a final blow. The one from The Dark Knight Rises is a better rendition if not exactly comics-accurate. The one in Young Justice makes him more South American but less impressive against a whole team of superheroes. Often Bane is the embodiment of 3rd-world brutality, bringing that wanton bloodshed to remind everyone that Gotham is not the only battleground in the world, and not even the most savage one. Oh, and we never see Candice again after this. Make of that what you will.

The Man who broke the Bat has entered the building! In Knightfall (Bane's 1st appearance, and where he performs the *snap*) there's just a one page panel of him breaking Batman's back "...BREAK YOU!", now an iconic image. To the point of Robot Chicken making a gag about it😄

So bane was first introduced in batman: vengeance of bane #1 released in January of 1993, meaning Harleys is actually a few months older than bane as a character. this episode came out in September of 1994, so only a year and a half after bane was ever first introduced so a decent amounts of his now established lore didnt exist. bane being dumb in some versions comes from 2 things, in the comics his addiction to venom sometimes reduces his intellect, and also the 90s live action movie batman and robin, basically made him just a mindless brute for no reason, so some versions refrence that

Throughout this one Candice was being a backstabbing bitch to Thorne looking for better profit from someone like that Bane🙄 but at the end after Batman played the tape recording of her own voice she knew she was SCREWED!!!🤣
