Season 1 of the Halo TV series is basically a reboot of this story... many disliked (some quite strongly) the execution of the show, I enjoyed much of it and hoping they learned from feedback. A lot of your questions would probably be spoilers if answered, they touch on many things you ask about in future Halo games. While they mentioned the flash clones failed, i don't feel that video was quite as impactful as the reality: They kidnapped children, replaced them with clones, and knew the clones would die after a few days of what looked like natural causes, so nobody would ask questions. A note on the terminals, since they were added much later in the game. I don't know how detailed the original lore was when they made the game. They were under super tight deadlines after Microsoft bought them to be ready at the Xbox launch. I know they had some backstory created, because the book Fall of Reach came out in 2001.... but I feel like they retconned details of the story into the original using the terminals. Amazingly, there are 38 books now. 3 of them are referred to as the Forerunner Saga. In the terminals you heard of the didact and the librarian... those books are heavy on that lore as well as the origins of 343 Guilty Spark. I listened to the audiobooks after it was revealed some of the changes from Fall of Reach to the TV show was actually incorporating stuff from those books earlier on.

(Don't worry, this isn't a spoiler, it's deep lore that's not explained in any of the games or shows) The insurrection started because the UNSC is essentially a military autocracy. Think of it as the UN, but every country is forced to be a part of it and can't become their own nations. Except that the people who want to be independent are on other planets. There are essentially nationalist movements on each of the colonies, but the UNSC denies them the ability to govern themselves, and instead appoints military governors to solar systems. And as the rebellions increased, the UNSC clamped down harder on the colonies. That's essentially the situation right as the movie starts. So ONI (The Halo equivalent to the CIA) starts the Spartan program to squash the rebellions with super soldiers. What's also not explained in the games is that Cortana was literally made out of Halsey's brain. She copied her brain into a computer and then made an AI out of it, although Cortana and Halsey are very different people. Cortana is the only AI that was made like that. She also wasn't made until very late into the war, only a few years before the events of Halo CE.

OMGGGGG I am so proud of myself for picking up on some of that! Thank you for this!

Mage Reacts

That's so cool! Do I have limitations on what I can start reading?

Dan Guisinger

Anything forerunner related would probably have some spoilers for the games …fall of reach was released with CE so that book should be safe. contact harvest is also safe I think. After that I’m not too sure, I believe many of the novels sit between different games in the timeline.

I love Halo content, this is so cool. You said you want more Covenant Lore? You're gonna love Halo 2. The one thing that frustrated many of us when we first saw this film in 2015 was that it only depicts the first half of the book The Fall of Reach. You should read the book Meg, a lot of the questions you're asking are answered in the 2nd half of the Fall of Reach novel. I mean for a film called "The Fall of Reach" I was expecting to see the fall of Reach. The novel Halo: First Strike depicts what happens between Halo 1 and Halo 2. Also written by Eric Nylund, author of the Fall of Reach. He also wrote an excellent short story "The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole" I love that title by the way. It's found in the book "Halo: Evolutions". Also just to clarify something, in the ship battle depicted in the movie the ship UNSC Commonwealth sacrificed 3 Longsword fighter planes to lure the Covenant ship to a safe distance where they then launched the nuke. Judging by the tone of voice of one Longsword pilots, it sounded like he was aware that his fighter planes were being sacrificed to save the ship. What was that thing Keyes woke up from you ask? He was in Cryosleep. It's a common trope in sci-fi that for long distance travel the crew is frozen and then thawed out upon arrival. Like in Interstellar, or Ridley Scott's Alien movie. Halo is heavily influenced by the Alien franchise.

Also ... since you love lore, Bungies earlier success was a series of games called Marathon. with a cyborg marine silent hero (sound familiar?). The aliens called the Pfhor was the enemy, and it consisted as multiple alien species united under a religous ... covenant. One of the species was called The Hunter and had huge blade like shields on its arms and a plasma cannon. Its full of ship-board AIs. There was a Marathon creature called a Sharquoi that appeared in the Halo 1 demo but got cut, they tried to put it into Halo 2 but it also got cut... it eventually made it into a novel. Their game before Marathon, as well as Marathon also had ancient civilizations that were destroyed by something similar to the flood. The Halo games use the Marathon logo as a symbol in many parts of the games. Leading up to Halo CE, there was a bunch of "Cortana Letters"... before Cortana was unveilled, but recognizable as a Marathon-style AI ... it was while the game was in early development so they don't really fit Cortana's final personality: https://halo.fandom.com/wiki/Cortana_Letters It is believed that Marathon and Halo exist in the same game universe., and it was initially assumed Halo was a sequel to Marathon's 3rd game. The 3rd Marathon if I remember correctly had parallel time loops, and thus Halo can exist in a parallel Marathon universe.... Bungie now has a new version of Marathon in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

I definitely will! Thank you so much for the cryosleep info lol I can't even imagine.

Mage Reacts

OMG! So should I wait to play/react to Marathon content, or are the original versions worth playing?

Dan Guisinger

I myself have never played the originals. They were Mac exclusives in the mid-1990s... very much in the style of the original Doom games that were more pseudo-3D. They also didn't have any of the cinematic qualities that you've come to expect, most information was relayed through reading information displayed on terminals. There are plenty of lore videos out there, if you wanted to react to Marathon lore one of us would probably need to seek out and find a video that doesn't make comparisons to Halo, because they could be referencing future Halo lore

Dan Guisinger

Also, one of the Halo videos you originally reacted to was actually the MacWorld Halo demo. Back then, just like Marathon, Halo was supposed to be a Mac exclusive game and Steve Jobs brought them out on stage to demo it. It caught the eye of Microsoft who needed a platformer for their upcoming Xbox, and they turned around and quickly bought out Bungie and made it an exclusive.
