Oh so now I see you're starting to go through the STAR WARS movies Meg!😉

Naw

A H H H dorable. Time to get Meg some comics 🤭🤭🤭

Oh giiiiirrrrrl you are gonna be in for a LONG obsession. I think I know more about Star Wars lore than I do about real life stuff because it's such an insanely well fleshed out universe (including the games) and I'm super excited that you're embracing it! George Lucas is also a based anti-imperialist and frequently talks about how this movie is an allegory for the Vietnam War. Excited for more, as always!

The Amazing Webhead

Here we go, Meg’s new potential obsession. Lol Star Wars has so much lore that expands beyond the original trilogy. Like the prequels, sequel trilogy, and the number of tv shows that do connect everything together both live action & animation. It will be a long journey for sure lol.

Yeeeaaaaah! This was awesome. And yeah Meg your questions will be answered as you said. When this came out in the 70's it was just titled "Star Wars." It wasn't until the sequels that Lucas was like, "I'm gonna make prequels so I'll call the first one episode 4." It was cool you caught the part where Leia is comforting Luke after Obi-Wan disappeared and you point out that Leia lost her whole planet and she's still comforting him. She's lost so many more people. I think a sketch from Robot Chicken pointed out that exact same thing. After you watch the original trilogy and the prequels I hope you circle back to "Rogue One" and give it another chance, it makes so much more sense and hit's so much harder with the added context. "May the force be with you" ... "and also with you" yeah Meg, it does seem to heavily draw on Catholicism. Also Dune, the Star wars movies are heavily inspired by Dune, the Dune book from the 1960's. George Lucas got a lot of his ideas from Dune.

Welcome to the magic of the Original Trilogy’s storytelling, there’s a reason this movie had you hooked vs the new recent ones. Countless discussions to be had over which movies are superior, which media to consume, lore can get very complicated if you dive into it. Once you’ve seen the rest, I would suggest reading into how George Lucas conceived this universe, as that story itself is a filmmaking legend For now though, just enjoy the experience of these timeless classics, form your own opinions and plenty will come in time. You’ve taken your first step into a much larger world

Light Yagami

AAHHH I’m so excited for you to start this journey! The prequels are my favorite part of the series, can’t wait for you to get there

Watched anyway. Yup, 10/10 no notes.

And it’s Superman all over again. Then it was you discovering a hero who long symbolized my beliefs and high hopes. Now, it’s like watching a friend exploring my attic and finding my greatest treasure. And all I can do is quote the movie: “You have just taken your first step into a larger world.” I was born one week after this movie opened in theaters, Luke, Han, Leia, Threepio, Artoo, Vader, Obi-Wan, they have been a part of my identity, my fandom for my entire life, since my earliest memories. And it makes me cry seeing you cry because now it’s part of you too. And interesting take on The Force as a unifying faith versus convention religion which can be used to divide. And that’s the original explanation - an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, it penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together. Oh and my ex was a huge Artoo fan too. Or, as I teased, you really love the can, don’t you? And you talk about Vader’s height and the mask as reasons to swoon, but my dear… must you look past the leather too? So, I close with my hopes and wishes in song form from a classic fan to a new arrival: “But you’ll see every day/that we’ll never turn away/when it seems all your dreams come undone/We will stand by your side/Filled with hope and filled with pride/We more than we are, we are one.”

I'm always amazed to find someone who hasn't seen the trilogy which created Sci-Fi as we know it today. Before this, no one took the genre seriously, but I loved it and probably know more about it than anything else despite losing interest with the sequel trilogy. The entire project began with Lucas wanting to make a fantasy film about a mentor and apprentice on a journey together, being a big fan of 'road trip' movies. The 'used future' setting with all the ships and settings looking so junky and run-down is deliberate, making it very visually distinct from Star Trek. And yes, there are naturally a lot of fun Star Wars games that focus on space combat. My favorite is probably Rogue Squadron, and their novels are great too. The reason for 'Episode IV' is the ultimate extension of 'In Medias Res'- wanting to start the franchise right in the middle of the action with the possibility of some day making the first 3 episodes if the originals did well enough. It might seem an odd decision in retrospect but I appreciate how much the opening act focused on developing the droids and their temporary spat instead of our protagonist.

Mage Reacts

Yes! Caleb actually loved Rogue One and I assumed it had to do with having prior knowledge/watch experience

Mage Reacts

I can't wait to learn how he thought of it!

Mage Reacts

I remember watching Star Trek episodes with my Polish Grandpa. Maybe I grew up in a Star Trek household instead of a Star Wars one? 😂

I was wondering when you were going to start these. Lo and behold, I see Star Wars YAY. Honestly since Disney has almost killed the franchise, in my opinion (though I guarantee that many, many people is likely to agree with me) It felt like I was done with it forever, it actually killed me😢😄But by the time the music started playing, I went into full conductor mode, as you do. It feels great to go back to the good ol' days again, along with somebody who's fresh-ish to the whole thing. And having spent the last year or so loving your content, the fact that you're doing it is a big +! Thanks so much Meghan x

Brodie Vickers

Your a way's off, but could you please do Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003) when you get to that point. 100% positive you'll love that show. It was on another level of awesome when I was a kid, and it still is. You should watch the original Holiday Special next month too, though I doubt you'll thank me for that one😂

SpyyZ 053

Loved the reaction Meg, can't wait to see more :D

Fun trivia, the actor Peter Cushing who played Grand Moff Tarkin (the tall scary Imperial old guy) was wearing bedroom slippers during his scenes. The boots the props department made were too small for him, so he asked George Lucas if he could wear slippers and they just filmed him from the waist up. So while Tarkin is threatening Princess Leia he's actually wearing bedroom slippers, which is a funny image.

FireBall_IA

To answer your question if Star Wars is considered Sci-Fi, yes, unless you are a sci-fi fan, in which case it is Space Fantasy

Julio

Finally!! It was great to watch this along with you!! A New Hope is SUCH a classic. It was also the debut of DARTH VADERRR, voiced by the LEGENDARY James Earl Jones!!! "Your lack of faith disturbs me." and him nearly crushing that guy's throat using the force is what HOOKED ME on Vader. I hope you like the next ones!! But I think you will! The droids not being lifeforms was more of a like "that escape pod is empty, there are no lifeforms on board", although of course in some places they are disliked, like the Cantina "we don't want their kind here!" There is no logical basis for this except personal bias, so yeah. Besides that, all your questions will be answered in time!

Julio

Something to note is that when we saw Ben Kenobi use the force, he used it to trick a Stormtrooper into letting him go, but when we saw Vader use it, he nearly choked a man to death

DrEEsky

Yes, this movie came out first. IV V and VI as they are now numbered came out with three years in between each film. the agony of waiting was horrible! And we had heard even back then that Lucas had planned a prequel and a sequel but for many years thought they would never happen. Its amazing that they actually came about! I remember sitting in the theater watching this and thinking I had never seen anything quite like it! Even back then the CGI (or whatever it was called!) was pretty amazing!

Martin Li

Most likely. I didn't learn much about Trek myself aside from catching a few episodes of Next Generation. It's interesting now seeing the contrasts between one being a utopian view of the future and the other a grimmer outlook (though of course the SW films can still inspire a great deal of hope in the entropic chaos of the Galaxy Far Far Away).

Casey

Yay! Glad you’re watching one of my favorite franchises of all time! Especially these original 3 movies! Can’t wait to see your reaction to the next two movies (my favorites in the movie series)! 😁

Chryss Guiler

I recommend watching "Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy." But, only after Episode VI. (It's on youtube.) The original trilogy was made using only practical effects, no CGI. It's amazing what they were able to do with models and sound effects.

Chryss Guiler

Oh, the music! We bought the 2-record soundtrack when it came out. John Williams created an incredible score for this movie. I think we about wore out those records!

Chryss Guiler

The Empire Strikes Back, episode V, is considered by many people in the film world to be one of the best sequels ever.

Chryss Guiler

Yes, this movie stood alone as an incredibly fantastic story until we heard about sequels coming. In fact, when we saw Darth Vader spinning away from the Death Star we instantly thought sequel! Of course, it would be three years until the next episode arrived, yikes!

Casey

Indeed! And deservedly so imo 😁
