I'm like a minute into the reaction and watching Caleb try to be all stoic and Meg chastising him for "Hoth". :D This'll be a fun watchalong!

Never feel bad for feeling sympathy for Vader, Meg 😅 Darth Vader is one of the greatest villains of all time for a reason. He's not just 2 dimensional. He's not simply evil to be evil. You'll know more as you watch more of course (also I highly recommend you watch Clone Wars when you get to the prequels, because it's so essential in Star Wars) but I'm so hyped for you to see everything unfold!

Mage Reacts

LMAO HOTH SHOULD'VE BEEN THE LEAST OF MY CONCERNS...

''Don't you think he'd treat a woman well'' Caleb; chugs Pepsi....😅

FireBall_IA

No, I am your father. Now all Meg's comments about Vader being Daddy make sense.

OH, and Caleb did SO GOOOOOD BTW, Meg has NO idea! GGs, Caleb💚

It’s interesting seeing you already discussing certain aspects of morality and philosophy regarding the force and Star Wars. Lucas drew heavily from ancient Eastern ideologies, the Jedi Order is largely influenced by Buddhist and Daoist principles. The prequels will further expand upon it bc as Caleb said, you know as much as Luke does at this point. Quick aside but, some of the best Star Wars content outside the mainline movies heavily discusses these questions. I would strongly recommend the Knights of the Old Republic games as they are considered some of the best RPGs ever made for their storytelling and world building in this universe. They were made by BioWare around the time of the prequels and are highly revered. Their success would later spawn the Mass Effect series when BioWare decided to create their own Sci Fi universe

Mannnnn, Meg your comments during and the chat after make me want to talk Anakin/Vader, Dark Side, Light Side, Jedi Morality... but SPOILERS! haha. Loved watching. Excited for you to keep going. AND CALEB! Great job at not spoiling! I'm wishing you strength in the days and weeks to come... lol.

Oh yeah that was my comment about circling back to Rogue One eventually. I can not express how awesome it was to get that mention at the start of the video. That was really cool. Apparently there's a 3 year time jump between "A New Hope" and "Empire Strikes Back" so these characters have been around each other for a while now, and they've worked their way up the ranks of the rebellion. I love the implication that Han, Leia, and Chewie actually had dinner with Darth Vader. Vader says, "We would be honored if you would join us" then it shows them walking towards the table and the scene ends. So in my head they had a very awkward sit down meal with Vader and nothing will convince me otherwise.

If I get cancelled for keeping the secret, I’m fine with it. It’s so rare to see an honest to God “I had no idea!” reaction too, the going from “Well, of course.” to “Wait, WHAT?!?!?” at light speed was fantastic. The real question left now is the age old question for all Star Wars fans - is Empire better than the original Star Wars? Let the debate commence in the mage tower! Oh, and if we don’t see Return of the Jedi by day after Thanksgiving, I for one would be very surprised. I know obsession when I see it, after all. Welcome to the Dark Side. We have cookies.

You should definetly watch the underrated 2003 show too. No doubt the revivals a good show, but it's never been my favourite. I'll always prefer the 03 because of the art style and slick animation, as well as the fact that it was so damn cool at the age that I was at, and it still is today. I'll give the new show this it gave all the characters a bit more depth, but I think that wasn't what the creators for the OG were looking to do, their main priority was action.. and it worked. That being said, I believe they were both done well, and are very different to compare. At the end of the day though, I like the 2003 Clone Wars far better. Honestly, I'm still hurt from that big let down of a movie in 08, was expecting more top quality similar to the show, and instead we got.. that. Never completely got over it, unfortunately😂You could call it our generations Phantom Menace.

Thanks for putting the next one out so soon! Was not expecting that at all. Haven't watched it yet, but you might notice that Mark Hamill's face looks slightly different. Unfortunately he was involved in a terrible car accident which happened right after the 1st movie wrapped, he was hurt very badly around the face (fractured nose and cheekbone), even thought that he might have to quit acting completely. Luke being attacked by a Wampa in the opening scenes was meant to explain why he looked a little different in the sequel. But as we both know he's gone on to become an icon!

Robot Chicken agrees with you.

With the big reveal of Luke's parentage, Darth Vader's hologram chat comes off very differently now. When the Emperor says that he (The Emperor) believes Luke is Vader's son, Darth Vader is probably thinking in his head, "Crap! The Emperor found out. This is bad!" Vader says to the emperor "he's just a boy..." as if Vader is almost pleading for his son's life. When that line of argument fails Vader convinces the Emperor that Luke can be turned to their side. That whole scene hits different with the reveal at the end. Also Meg, I'll give you another reason to like Vader, he seems to have a good working relationship with Admiral Piett, who was promoted from Captain at the start of the movie. Whenever he speaks with Admiral Piett Vader seems a little more respectful compared with how he talks to everybody else. At the end of the movie when the Millennium Falcon escapes Admiral Piett has that horrified look on his face, he's like, "Well Darth Vader is about to kill me." But Vader walks right by and leaves the room. The common fan theory is that Vader likes Piett and knows that anybody who he replaces him with would not be as competent, so Vader cuts Piett slack that he wouldn't give to other imperial officers. Just a fan theory, but I like it.

Awesome reaction!!! Vader is evil, at least that's my theory. He isn't putting it on, but I think the Emperor is even MORE evil and quite possibly a cruel master to Vader since he's the one who supposedly turned him. So I think Vader found some comfort in finding his son and hoped that their combined strength would defeat the Emperor and have him be in charge. Of course, this would just switch one tyrant for another. I personally took Vader sparing Piett as a scene meant to show that in that moment, he wasn't thinking about anyone or anything other than Luke, and oh my God... the little moment where he watches the Falcon jump into lightspeed and then turns around, but not before giving the cosmos one more glance, to make sure they're gone (and by extent Luke, since he was on it) really humanizes him. Also great call on Caleb's part to watch ESB quickly since the big reveal is so widespread by now.

Brandon Gibbs

Now this one has even more dramatic thrills and I know it must've been quite a shock for you finding out Vader actually IS Luke's father but Han Solo was betrayed by his old friend Lando and has been frozen in carbonite and was taken to Jabba back on Tatooine. Now they must go there and get him back! Anyway Meg I know you're all confused right now but all will be made clear when you see the next one called RETURN OF THE JEDI!!!

Considered the zenith of all nine films, and a twist revelation forever seared into the public consciousness. Episodes 1-3 are Anakin Skywalker's story, which you'll get to. But even before then Vader is a fascinating villain thanks to the depth this film gives him. Naturally the Galactic Empire would give you colonizer vibes- all the officers are Brits in order to capture the apprehension many felt towards the British Empire. Complete with impractical uniforms, many foolish commanders and a powerful navy. Props to the costuming department for creating a gallery of bounty hunters visually-interesting enough to get their own background stories.

The questions you're asking are definitely the right ones. I think what makes star wars unique is what it has to say about heroism. The Jedi aren't just any swashbuckling hero it is a lot more complex than that. Your questions about the dark and the light are also right. You will come to learn more about it in the next movie and the prequels and sequels as well as the animated stuff.

John Mills

the special edition edits/additions stick out like sore thumbs. this was the masterpiece of the OT and the changes are not needed.

Geoffrey Linehan

About Yoda singing. It’s from a you tube channel that purposely put music lyrics in to match lip movements of dialogue. It’s for humor.

Geoffrey Linehan

I suspect Darth killed the lieutenants on his ship because it was a projection of his hatred towards himself. At the end, he’s too despondent about his own failure with Luke to torture any subordinate.

My Dinner with Vader https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywSOt773ic4 I'm nearing the end of this commentary now, and it's been amazing going on this journey again with someone new, thank you! Recently I've felt like Disney has completely ruined Star Wars for me, but I'm glad that's not been the case, the ❤️ is still there. There is sooooo much lore to this franchise, books, comics, video games, shows. So try not to feel overwhelmed by it all, be careful Meg haha. Myself I'd recommend the Dark Empire comic series, and the Thrawn Trilogy which both take place a few years after ROTJ. Both of which you can enjoy at your leisure, the latter I'll probably send you a link to soon. It's also nice to see somebody be sympathetic to Lando for a fuckin' change ha.

Chryss Guiler

No, I think we should wait three years like we did in 1980!

Chryss Guiler

As I recall, the original title of Episode VI was going to be Revenge of the Jedi. I think George Lucas changed it because the Jedi don't take revenge.
