I'd like to preface this with saying: I'm okay!! I took a LONG nap with Bumi after we recreated the "Tell your sister you were right" scene a few times. Yuna said she wouldn't participate because she absolutely was NOT Leia and would only accept the role of Yoda, as she is YunaYoda. She is technically my emotional support animal on paper, but also prefers to fall asleep when I'm crying 🤣I also realized that a huge reason I love Darth Vader as a character so much, is because traditional villains typically have easy motivations: wealth, power, control, etc. But the whole "tell your sister you were right" scene is so moving because it's not "tell *THE WORLD* you were right." it leads me to believe Anakin was a family man. When it came down to it, he only cared about what his children thought of him (and maybe his lover?), even if the entire galaxy considered him a horrible villain and celebrated his death. I know, I know I have the prequels to watch, and I am so excited for them. I will never get over that scene, truthfully, the more I think about it the more heartbroken and amazed I feel.

I also realized when I stopped recording that "Return of the Jedi" is a reference to Anakin, isn't it? Are you kidding me? Excuse me while I go cry forever.

I’m so excited to watch this

FearTheTREMOR

Yep Darth Vader is very 3 dimensional. The reasoning for a different lightsaber color is a specific lore thing about how lightsabers are made. I won't tell you here in case you don't want to know, but it doesn't mean much in terms of the story. Just that Luke constructed a new one, unique to him, distinct from his father's. The prequels really flesh out a lot, and again I would highly, highly recommend watching the Clone Wars TV show chronologically after the second prequel movie, Attack of The Clones. It's a long show, keep that in mind. So of course you don't need to if that is a lot to pile on. But it's so important to star wars that it's essentially another movie. But next up is The Phantom Menace! Excited for you to peer into the past of the Jedi, before the rise of the Empire 🙌 ❤️

Brandon Dodge

Honestly I'd recommend watching The Clone Wars after Revenge of The Sith, it kinda feels like it was made with people who watched it in mind.

FearTheTREMOR

Nah I disagree. It's better to watch chronologically what happens, then to watch RoTS just before the ending of the show. All the juice from the show is then in your head when you watch the last prequel. Having the ending already in mind unnecessarily ruins it I think when we are talking about someone more new to Star Wars.

Naw

*Laughs in Prequels and Clone Wars Season Seven*

FireBall_IA

That's when it came out as well, after RoTS

FearTheTREMOR

Yeah but that's release order, not always the best way when chronological order exists 🤷‍♂️

Anna Kyruin

There are a lot of things in the original trilogy that people pick on, like Chewbacca not getting a medal at the ceremony in ep4, but what gets me is Luke burning Vader's corpse without his sister there to say goodbye to her dad.

Chess Red Eagle

So I won't go into TOO much as I know you will continue watching other Star Wars media but in defense of Obi-Wan, he TRULY believes that if a jedi is corrupted by the dark side the jedi effectively died and was replaced by something evil that just wears their face and has their memories. Star Wars as a whole tends to treat falling to the Dark Side like the various zombie viruses. The person dies and is effectively replaced by another entity completely separate from the person they once were. That's why he described it the way he did to Luke. Because that is his truth.

Brandon Gibbs

Yeah I kinda figured you would go all emotional over this one Meg. Luke was the only one who still believed there was still good in his father Vader and he was right, still it cannot justify all the bad unforgivable things he's done. The galaxy will always remember him as evil Darth Vader. Also a green lightsaber means Jedi consular, a Jedi who preferred to reflect on the mysteries of the force and fight the dark side at it's heart.

Naw

.......poor Caleb...😅

LankyRambo

I definitely second a Clone Wars (and Rebels > Obi Wan > Mandalorian > Ahsoka) watch-throughs after the prequels! Hahaha, so much Star Wars, but its so good and can be so emotional!

Chess Red Eagle

Loved your reaction to Vader's redemption and burial and seeing all three force ghosts at the end. It's a fantastic ending to a legendary trilogy. To answer a few questions, Jabba is basically a Mafia crimelord. He controls the underbelly of Tatooine. The Dark Side is...tricky. ULTIMATELY, and this gets expanded in MANY supplemental material, the goal of the dark side and the Sith as a whole is just have ultimate power. Traditionally they seek it by always fighting each other so that a stronger and stronger Sith is always in charge. If Luke had struck down the Emperor, or Vader, in anger, it likely would have corrupted him and turned him to the dark side and so the power lives on. And at this time, blue and green were just colors that Lucas liked for the Jedi and red for the Sith. Eventually it did come to be defined WHY the colors are as they are. Blue generally means a Jedi more attuned to the physical aspect of the force and are really good fighters. Green are the more spiritually attuned ones to the force. They have the strongest connection to it and typically have the strongest force powers, like Yoda being able to easily lift the X-Wing while Luke struggled with it but was much stronger PHYSICALLY than Vader.

Man, the ending of ROTJ always makes me cry. The level of compassion in Luke, to never give up on his father, to throw down his weapon in front of his mortal enemy and declare, 'I'm not going to fight anyone, I will not give in.' And then Vader's redemption, the body language of David Prowse was so amazing, you could see Anakin Skywalker gradually returning. 'No... No!'. 'Return of the Jedi', Anakin Skywalker finds the light in him and destroys the Sith: himself, or more so Darth Vader and the Emperor. I think that Yoda and Obi-wan didn't want to lose Luke the same way they lost Anakin. The light side, as showcased by Luke, is not devoid of emotion; it embraces peace, compassion, and empathy, in contrast to the dark side, which relies on anger, fear, and uncertainty, feelings that are easily manipulated. I think that Vader was basically enslaved by the dark side and by the Emperor, unable to break free, his constant "you don't know the power of the dark side" may have multiple meanings, "you don't know what has ensnared me" or "you don't know how appealing this power is". It is obvious that giving into anger, into hate, you would achieve more power, but limiting yourself to NOT giving into the dark side takes strength. It takes strength to resist.

First of all, so glad Caleb was there to hug you. Wish Bumi and Yuna had dropped in to cuddle too. I still feel like the world’s proudest parent. What I have loved and carried for so long is now safe in your hands and loved and treasured as much as I have. Vader is just such a great character, it’s such a great story, I get emotional with the landing platform scene, Anakin’s redemption and passing and final scenes on Endor. It’s so amazing. You have so much more ahead - the prequels, the Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, The sequels, Rogue One, Solo, the Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor and so much more. I hope truly that all you feel now remains true as you go ahead. But I’m so grateful that you gave it a chance and now the Force is with you. Keep it safe for me, please.

Raztaban

Luke's Lightsaber is green because they couldn't get the blue to work against the blue sky for the sequence on Tatooine (with the 1980s special effects tech).

DaftBasterd

I really love when Vader says, "It's too late for me, son", because he sounds so deeply sad about it, not hateful or resentful, but it sounds much more like he's crying out for help, wanting Luke to say exactly what he DID say, "there's still good in you Father, I know it". It was the perfect response every time and I love the specificity of the dialogue. Can't wait for the prequels!

Frankie H

When the Ewoks are trying to eat Han, Luke, and Chewie, Meg says, "Have stormtrooper for dinner instead." That's funny because most of the evidence implies that those Ewoks ate lots of those stormtroopers after the battle. The Empire was very xenophobic. So aliens are 2nd class citizens in the Empire. This explains why there are so many aliens in the rebellion. They're fighting back. Especially the squid guys, the Mon Calimari. They were some of the biggest supporters of the rebels. I especially love Admiral Akbar, and that he is the leader of the rebel military, and he's an alien. I really thought that was a cool idea.

Geoffrey Linehan

There’s an interesting deleted scene at the end of Darth telling him that the Emperor is arriving soon. Look for it on Youtube. https://youtu.be/_ayT0EZwbks?si=BTj_muop_XRUUn6B Also, look for the original Jabba palace song scene as seen in 1983. It’s very different — and I think fits better. https://youtu.be/2w25pcTIFlQ?si=1FXZFoEJKB-HhVXh There’s a different final movie scene in the 1983 version. You see a much older Anakin. https://youtu.be/TvXm5HuR72k?si=Zv6GeueQxISqByEC

Geoffrey Linehan

You don’t know the power of the dark side, I interpreted to mean that Darth is saying the dark side is too controlling. He has no self-will. He must obey his master. This would have been the first time 1980s audiences would have seen Jabba on screen. Luke’s saber was changed to green in post production when it was recognized that it would not show up well against the blue sky. I’ve learned from the ROTJ discussion on the Retroblasting channel that Lucas originally intended to have chapters 7-9 involve Luke seeking this other Skywalker. I read in the three volume book series about the archives and notes on the making of Star Wars that Lucas had always considered Luke and Leia to be twins, whether biological or not. The Retroblasting host mentioned that Lucas wanted to wrap up the missing Skywalker thread. So, he made Leia Luke’s sister.

RX2904

And this is why newbies should watch in release order. It's a beautiful journey to find out that in the end it was Anakin's story all along, but you have to watch the OG trilogy first to know that. Only after that, with that love for the characters in your heart, you explore the origins of Anakin and see the prequels. If you watch in chronological order you begin with Anakin being the protagonist and rob yourself of that journey.

Mage Reacts

I love that he chose green because he likes it lmao. But so cool that they added meaning to the colors after the fact.

Mage Reacts

You are so right, and I love Luke's idea/portrayal of the light side. He knew it so well that he sensed it in his father when no one else did. 😭

Mage Reacts

LMAO! Sometimes it's as simple as that 🤣

Mage Reacts

Oooo I might have to do this today, thank you!

Martin Li

My favorite of the OG trilogy, though I understand why some feel it was too kid-friendly compared to Episode 5. That's been an eternal meta-conflict within the series really; the balance between the dark serious stuff and the need for some kid-friendly aspects in our space opera. Jabba and the Emperor are both more cartoonishly villainous than Vader, but they're both popular enough to prove their value across the years. The Ewoks are not well-liked by some either, especially since the original plan was to have them be Wookiees like Chewbacca only to have their names reversed and their bodies slimmed down to be cuter. Vader's 'No!' is a special edition that I felt was unnecessary, preferring when he was just silent. Still, love the finale. I was young watching it for the first time in theatres, and rarely have I felt such deep satisfaction as when that cackling jerkass Emperor had all his perfect plans undone by Luke's faith and selflessness, a father's love for his son... and Ewoks. IRL, the reason for the green lightsaber is that the blue didn't blend well with the sky of the Tatooine sets. In-verse, it's to represent the Jedi becoming new, their order reborn from its ashes with Luke. Returned. As for how Vader fell to the dark side... that's the Prequel's story.

Geoffrey Linehan

I know there’s no dialogue, but when Darth heaves the Emperor, I imagine him thinking, “You #%%^%<. You ruined my life!”

Geoffrey Linehan

It’s more than just, “Luke, you were right.” It was, “Tell your sister you were right.” That’s him reassuring him despite what Leia may have believed. Also, here’s how I interpret the point of “feelings”. The Dark Side of the Force is fueled by anger and rage. If you focus on your true self, you are calm and see the truth instinctively with your own feelings.

Chryss Guiler

I agree with you, Brandon, watch this saga in release order. When we heard that the prequels were going to be made, we were thrilled because then we got to see how Anakin turned into Darth Vader. I watched the Clone Wars 2008 just last year and I wondered how they were going to handle Anakin's turn to the dark side of the force, and I think they did a really good job.

Chryss Guiler

Is it written somewhere that the colors of the lightsabers have different meanings? I've never seen that. What does a purple lightsaber mean?

FearTheTREMOR

No I agree with watching the actual saga of movies in release order yes, but Clone Wars is best watched chronologically between Episodes 2 and 3.

Chess Red Eagle

It's been in a lot of books and comics. I don't know when it first started. Purple is red and blue mixed together as the user is generally a powerful warrior that walks the edge between using aggression of the dark side but still staying on the side of light.

Dragonfly Dan

Great reaction Meg! I saw the first movie 3 times in the theater when I was a freshman in college, before it was named A New Hope. I would have seen it more times but couldn't afford it. You tend to run ahead of the show a bit, but you are running in the right direction. Your early observation about the Dark side being just the messy parts of being human and maybe not all evil is very interesting. You'll see more of the orthodox Jedi philosophy in the prequels. It will be interesting to see your reactions. Thanks for letting us tag along on your journey! (Looking forward to Caleb's hilarious edits on YT too!)

Chryss Guiler

I really wish George Lucas had not done the special editions of the original trilogy. I know he wanted to put things in that he didn't have the technology for when he did the original movies, but I don't think anything was added that I can recall that was worth it. If he had added special effects that helped the story or made things more clear perhaps, that might have been good. But what was the point of a Bantha herd on Tatooine in episode 6? Did it add anything to the story?

Geoffrey Linehan

Most of them were unnecessary. Not only unnecessary, but it damages the marvel of his creation because audiences would then be puzzled when they learn that there was cgi added. They won’t be able to be astounded by the effects which were amazing at the time. In some cases, the alterations screw up the rationale of the original scenes, as with Han and Greedo shooting simultaneously, and the jazz music in Jabba’s palace when the original music was more somber. It fit the mood better.

Chryss Guiler

Couldn't have said it better, RX2904. Here's to you!

Chryss Guiler

Yes, I did not like the Ewoks when the movie came out in 1983. (I'm not a teddy bear person.) But in watching it as the years have gone by I've come to realize that the Ewoks were portrayed as a real people, with their own culture. I still cringe a little bit, though.

Martin Li

Would you have preferred they stuck with the original plan of having the natives be Wookiees?

Casey

Loved your reaction! This and Empire are my favorite movies in the saga! And you were wondering about cosplay of Leia’s costume in Jabba’s palace, a lot of people do cosplay that look. They just call it Huttslayer Leia, because she’s a badass that choked that vile slug 😎 Can’t wait for more Star Wars reactions!

Casey

Oh, and George Lucas didn’t know that Luke and Leia would be siblings at first. In fact, when he did first come up with the idea that Luke would have a sister, the original plan was to have another trilogy where Luke finds his sister by the second movie.

Tayyib Majumder

In the end all of the emperor and yoda and obi wan were all wrong. Luke's compassion and to not give in to hate he proved all of them wrong and in doing so he became the best Jedi ever. Yoda says, "A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defence". And after Luke cuts Vader's hand away he realises they could be one and the same if he strikes him down in hate and anger he will become what the emperor wants. But this time he throws his lightsaber away the most precious item of a Jedi and refuses to fight and end the cycle of violence. It's beautiful what George has to say about heroism, a lot of times the hero must kill the villain and save the day but Luke doesn't participate and through his compassion and love it saves him and his father.

Unstablebeast

can i just say i love when meg gets a new hyperfixation, first batman/dc, then assasins creed, now star wars, and every time im happy to see her experience it all. now if we could just get her hyperfixated on the yakuza series like i got a few years ago lol

Methampheminist

Nope, clone wars between AOTC and ROTS isn't true to the release order. Release order is the best order for someones first time watching.

FearTheTREMOR

Can't agree. The events make ROTS even better and enhances the experience. Don't wanna spoil of course, but CW gives context needed that otherwise ROTS is lesser for it. Thats why chronological is perfect. Events make sense, leading right back into episode 3. Release is too fast when CW exists.

Mage Reacts

Oh trust me, I would fall hard for Yakuza!!!
