This gave me so much excitement and so much existential dread

If the protomolecule had to make you into an archetype, what would you be? I think mine would be the Entertainer :D

Ahhh, the wonderful world of "WTF"-Reactor-Faces at the Expanse endings esp. in S3 🙂

I'm all aboard the simulation train!

You will indeed love the books. In much of the writing you experience what's going on in the character's heads -- even the protomolocule's!!

So you grew up being a "helper," Meg? Mr. Rogers would be proud! It's interesting to hear your appreciation of Anna... I feel much the same about her, and back when the show was first airing, AV Club's Zack Handlen, who was writing The Expanse episode reviews and recaps for the site at the time, spent the first three paragraphs of his review of this episode praising the character. "There aren’t enough characters like Anna Volovodov on TV," Handlen wrote, "Her kindness and warmth would normally relegate her to a backseat position, the sort of passive figure that other characters aspire to be more like while they galavant around having adventures. But she has also has an intense passion for discovery that drives her to stay on board the Prince..." "She’s ... capable of being both deeply empathetic and kind, and also a little selfish—albeit in a completely defensible and entirely relatable way," he adds later. "She’s also optimistic, and while that optimism doesn’t always yield positive results, it’s a relief to see someone whose faith and hope legitimately does drive them to be a better person." Sorry to spend so much of my comment quoting someone else, but I couldn't have said it better myself. The funny thing, though, is that Anna is actually a somewhat controversial character, apparently. While I would venture that most people like her immensely, there is a loud contingent of the fanbase who appear to despise her, for reasons passing understanding. They speak of her being sanctimonious and unrealistically competent, neither of which I get at *all*. And they talk about Elizabeth Mitchell's performance being "cringeworthy," which I am convinced is a word people use to criticize things they have no actual specific complaints about. That's weird, though, right? I don't get it. I often wonder if it isn't because people have a problem with religious characters being gay, but they know they'll get a lot of criticism if they say that, so they make up other stuff to be "bothered" by. Oh, well. I totally agree with you, so the haters can all go [insert Belter insult and hand gesture here] as far as I'm concerned. I like to think of myself as well-rounded and multi-faceted, but if I were forced by some freaky events like this to be reduced to a single archetype, I think it would probably be that of an Engineer. Like Naomi, I have a compulsion to fix whatever is broken and set right whatever is wrong. And also like Naomi, my efforts in that regard are not always successful. But I'd keep trying, because also like a prototypical engineer, I can be stubbornly persistent, often against all reason 🙂. Still enjoying your reactions tremendously. Keep them up! And happy almost-birthday. My birthday is coming up about 10 or so days after yours. Alas, I will be a good deal more than 29. But I try to maintain some level of youthful exuberance, even if my body disagrees!

Your reaction to Ashford talking about seeing his "only child burn" was pure gold and so empathetic! Many reactors and Screaming Firehawks love TV series Ashford as their favorite! I am so excited for the end of this season! So much wonderment to come! And a very Happy Birthday to you!! you are wise beyond your years and it has been such a pleasure going through my favorite show of all time with you! So much more amazing TV to come!

Ironically, I think Simu Liu's Martian character is one of the more level-headed Martians we meet. He's actually much more level headed than even Bobbie was back when she was first introduced in Season 2. He tries to hear out Holden (who objectively does sound kind of crazy) and attempts to negotiate with him. He's also pretty sympathetic to Holden seemingly "cracking." Throughout the episode he also tries to mellow out the other two Martians that are under his command. Which is what makes it all the more tragic that he's the one that somewhat panics in the end and throws the grenade at the Protomolecule structure. As far as why Simu Liu played the role, a majority of The Expanse's supporting cast are regulars of the Canadian film scene. It's funny because I can now always tell when a show is filmed in Canada, because two or three Expanse supporting actors will inevitably show up each episode. The Canadian acting scene seems to be pretty close knit. At this point Simu Liu was mostly an up and coming working Canadian actor, most well known for Kim's Convenience. He filmed this episode in between seasons of that show. I've always liked to think that Simu Liu's character here was the son of Theresa Yao, the Captain of the Donnager back in Season 1. Captain Yao was played by Jean Yoon, Simu Liu's onscreen mother in Kim's Convenience. Two very memorable MCRN characters, in short-lived roles.

Great job Meg!!! Looking forward to the last few episodes of this season.
