Nice reaction !! I also can’t wait for March 3rd your aot reaction. I’m a manga reader and let me tell you girls the first episode of part 3 is 10 times sadder than the episode we left off on last year.

Goob

It’s never outright confirmed but most assume Thorfinn’s small stature is a cause similar to Levi’s, malnourishment.

Fish Smell Bad

No, they are not the same woman. The second one has freckles and a different facial structure.

my boys! little did i know when i started vinland saga that the little angry boy would become my favourite main character form an anime and one of my favourite characters altogether. einar is a wholesome character who deserves everything good in this world 😭

@Jay Craig An old friend of mine suffered from this, I had to stop talking to them because they kept ruining my experience.

I personally don’t think Ketil is being manipulative. He just seems like a farmer who buys slaves as workers for his farm, like how he only buys Einar because he’s worked on a farm. That sounds horrible, but like you mentioned given the times, that’s the most common way to obtain workers. And while the whole clearing the woods for freedom task seems impossible, given how much Thorfinn was able to do by himself, I could see the 2 of them getting it done in that 3 year time frame Ketil mentions. I could be completely wrong and Milena could be right though lol. Will have to see as the season goes on

Eren Yeager

You probably missed it but the man with Ketil (Pater) said he was a former slave who got his freedom through the same way

ian

I can't imagine any Western media depicting slavery this way but it was not completely black and white with how all slave owners treated their slaves. Its basically slavery treated like indentured servitude. Its hard to accept how people could be so inhumane at different time periods but I think all our morality is completely relative. I'm sure 100 years from now if all of our meat is lab grown people are gonna look back at factory farming and not be able to understand why 99% of the human population just accepts it and eats meat every day.

I am Japanese, like the author, and it is said that malnutrition during childhood is the cause in Japan as well. In addition, Levi and Mikasa are considered by the official setting to have more developed muscles and heavier weight than usual as a characteristic of the Ackermann clan. Incidentally, the reason why Al (the body) of Fullmetal Alchemist did not die behind the door was because he shared the nutrition that Ed ingested, which is why Ed was smaller than his age. That is the reason why Ed grew bigger in a short period of time after regaining his body.

when i saw the episode the first time i didn't think in the master being manipulative but you left me thinking about that possibility now xd and i also thought the woman with the son was the crush of Einar, but not, the crush of Einar hasn't freckles. i like the way you think about the development of Thorfinn and what you expect from now, and (i'm sorry my spam is coming) i have to say this but this is why i think you would love MONSTER Well, I'm so excited for the next one.✨

The Spartacus series dealt with slavery in a very similar manner. To some extend even the series Rome portrayed it the same. The movie The Northman, again, has a similar depiction. Slaves were very expensive. This fact alone was why the slave owners in general took good care of them. Abusing a slave is like keying your own car. You can do it because it's your car but it's a counterproductive thing to do.

I have a question. I read a bunch of the manga and is it me or is the tone of the anime way more serious than the source material? At least for this season. It's almost like a completely different show. Almost. Does anyone else get the same impression?

You are right. Einar's past is not depicted in the manga, his comic moves are omitted and more serious scenes are presented. I don't think this is a bad alteration considering the weight of the theme. However, some may be dissatisfied.

Izaya

Thorfinn dropped the sword at last season's last scene, its a good thing he doesn't want to fight. If he has any intention of becoming a true warrior like his father the first step is to let go of the sword. He shouldn't come back to the battlefield. This is development

Oh yes, Mappa has written many humorous scenes more seriously and also portrayed them more seriously. Actually, in some scenes Einar should have been drawn simpering like Edward in FMAB and walked a bit funny. For example, the scene in the first episode when he steals food as he runs away from the slaveholders would have been such a scene. And especially with a later episode, I noticed how a rather lighthearted scene became much more somber. But the director of the adaptation said he wanted to do a few things differently to give the story a darker tone and better visualize the trauma of the characters.

Well I'm looking forward to Mappa failing at making Bug Eyes a somber character.

You spoilered a name! But yes, they can't make him somber. That would be like taking the humor out of Thorkell.

@0rr Malus I remember you shitting on the anime every week saying you've stopped watching in the first 10 episodes & saying you genuinely couldn't understand how people can watch/like this show & LM shouldn't watch it, it's too barbaric but things seemed to have changed for you now & you also read the manga? wow you're a fan now I guess, I would have never thought 🤣

Very true. I figured Levi because of his flashback with Kenny. He seemed to be a very starved and frail boy. So I figured that was the source of his height. Thank you for the information!

I still don't like the anime. It's pretty tone deaf. It elevates the tragic parts while also keeping the goofy parts which makes it seem like 2 completely different style anime playing at once. It makes sense now knowing what MAPPA did. The manga author had his own story. The anime director had his own story as well. Unfortunately they did not mix. Stories and characters can be changed completely by altering a very small thing. I now stand 110% with what I previously said about the anime but now I blame MAPPA for the mess. Reminds me of the original JoJo anime from the 90's. Imagine someone trying to turn JoJo into a grimdark moody story.

I mean come on Malus. Vinlands humour and goofyness is as tame as it gets for an anime. Comparing it to Jojo where characters punch frogs, have meme breathing superpowers and take out machine guns and grenades out of their back pockets is just ridiculous. This arc deals with trauma. I don't see how it being serious can be a bad thing.

I'm reading the manga right now. But I did start where this season starts so there might have been a change in tone from how it began. Comparing the first season to where I'm at in the manga it's like night and day. It borders on a satire. I find it way funnier than JoJo.

dude how are you still here, weren't you the one commenting on every Vinland reaction sayin they should drop it? now you're dropping awful opinions. mappa is doing what is should do with aot, keep the source material but add depth to it. Another L take from Orr
