the hole might leads to a nest? or something but we have heard noises, theres ‘something’ for sure better be ready for whats to come

Hyde, World’s Best Shoggoth

Idk man. The urge to have a knife is strong. Getting lost isn’t as bad as being injured 🗡️

Lizzy Lue

Tommorow is the Ides of March, you know what that means. 🗡🗡🗡

Fisher

i’ve switching away from knife onto wall and here’s the main reason why: torches can go out. Arthur may need to douse it to hide or it may get blown out. in that case it’s better to have a free hand to be able to feel his way through and he may not be afforded the time to put away his knife in his belt, which took him a little bit to do in 204 as we heard. i’ve seen some arguments that the navigation choice is obsolete because it’s not like they’ll be in darkness because they have the torch no matter what we pick but i urge people to consider what would be better in the event that we lose that light.

Fisher

another point i’m putting in here: if Arthur chooses the dagger, he’s likely not going to stick to the wall as well even if that would be logical. otherwise then it’d feel like he gets to do both options at once. or maybe he’ll try to but will end up losing it. he’s probably going to view the dagger as enough protection to justify moving away from it. and in that scenario, if the torch goes out, he and John will be in the dark with neither of them knowing where the wall is with no way to orient themselves, possibly in a situation where they also can’t use the lighter or have the time to try to re-light the torch - remember the inside of the crack is described as being “wet,” so, things may be harder to stay lit inside it. 1/3

Fisher

Arthur had to rub his lighter against the wood of the windmill’s floor since it got soaked from the rain, so it’s not a guaranteed alternate option if the torch goes out. we don’t know anything about the layout of this place and there could be hazards for him to stumble into if he isn’t able to feel his way, and the possibility for John to become panicked if they find themselves in the dark without their bearings i feel is pretty high given how shaky he’s been the entire episode. at least if Arthur keeps close to a wall he’ll be able to navigate by touch. 2/3

Fisher

and if something does come to attack them, then once again i’ll add that Arthur has the dagger at his belt and pulling it out if necessary wouldn’t be super hard for him. whereas if he’s holding the knife when he goes in and needs to have a free hand, it would take him a minute to stick it back in his belt as he doesn’t have a sheathe or anything to easily tuck it into. we can hear him fumble with securing it, and though it doesn’t take a huge amount of time, those seconds could be too valuable to risk and may end up in the worst case with him needing to decide to leave the dagger behind if he otherwise can’t stuff it back in his bag. 3/3

Fisher

or maybe he will simply find a scary guy and stab it i don’t know i just work here

Dipity

The knife could not have helped with the wraith or the lighthouse fog or the thing in the lake in season 1. It wouldn't have helped with the electric worm or the moss man or (likely) the gug in season 2. It didn't help with the mine beast in Addison or the bugs that got Oscar's arm or scratch. There are a thousand things that Could be in this hole that want to hurt us but only a scant few would need to worry even a little bit about a knife. I would prefer to find our way through quickly, without losing our way, than to rely on the comfort of the knife.

SavageIvyy

I'm sticking with knife. This isn't just a normal steak knife, it's Kaynes. It won't be normal and we don't know what it fully does yet. Even with Arthur sticking to the safe route of following the wall that hasn't always worked out in the past, and what exactly are we working back towards? A collapsed ladder? Also I have faith in Owlexander

SavageIvyy

I'm feeling like it wasn't useful before because it wasn't meant to be useful before outside of Arthur getting back to reality. But we're armpit deep in Kaynes fuckery now and it's going to be relevant

Dipity

I definitely get that argument! And I agree the knife is probably gonna have some new relevance this season but I don't think that will make it automatically Useful in every scenario.

Teakettle

So, I am voting wall, for a number of reasons. I won't lie that my first reasoning for wall was purely a gut feeling of not wanting to lose my way in a claustrophobic place (I am claustrophobic in real life) but there are other good reasons 1- We have got turned around before (in the cave with moss man) and that's when John could see. There is precedent for John not being able to find his way out of caves 2- If the torch goes out we are distinctively screwed 3- I don't want to give John a knife right now (and he might need to be the one wielding it because he can see). John has not earned sharp object privilege after the stunt he pulled. 4-Also I'll go down trying to be friendly we maybe shouldn't be friendly with but I don't want to provoke hostility having a weapon drawn.

Eve Jarvis

We can keep it at 50/50

Daniil Yarrow

Have you considered how cool Arthur will look holding the ritual dagger and a torch?

Cosmic.Codex

We have a history if getting lost in places like this

Potat

do you really want to touch a slimy fleshy mouth's wall. don't you want to stab something

Laura A Moore

A Knife gives us something to protect us with while we go in the cave, something definite. I don't trust that we won't lose the torch somewhere in there, and I'd rather see what we need to stab than run

Teakettle

We are keeping the torch irrespectively. The options are to have the knife or our hand on the wall

Daniil Yarrow

Yeah I flipped, NO ties. Plus the arguments for wall in the discord were too convincing. I can’t go for dagger for the bit any more

Jones

Dagger propaganda inbound: My two cents are that the knife option was "unlocked" by last vote forcing inventory management. If we'd voted to go into the hole immediately then Arthur would have decided on his own and the only reason they're considering holding the knife is because they were reminded of its existence. This might mean that touching the wall is fine if it was what they were going to do by default, but it could also mean we're getting a chance to do something differently. The main thing that changed between last vote and now is that Arthur's hand is actively bleeding. I'd like to avoid giving the wall-mouth a taste for Arthur's blood if possible. Also, this part placed an emphasis on the tools Arthur and John have at their disposal and I think it's time to start actively using them.

Layali

I personally wouldn’t touch the wall of a thing whose entrance looked like a mouth. I’d assume I’m in the throat, and the wall will eat/melt me. + I don’t know if ‘not getting lost’ matters as much anymore. Not getting lost, yes, but being able to go back…not really. There’s nothing to really go back to: we can’t go back up stairs, and we can’t go back outside bc of an unnatural storm. But I rly wish we could’ve seen what was on the upper floor…but then again if we keep the knife on our belt it should still be easy to get to when needed, right? So maybe we should keep a hand on the wall. I’m sure if it’s gonna melt our hand we’ll find out quick enough to keep the hand. Though honestly Arthur has enough body horror going on. No need for more. I’d feel heartbroken for him if he lost any more appendages, got any worse scars, etc. This is such a hard choice!! I mean just like…emotionally speaking having just parsed through our bag deciding what to keep and what to lose makes me feel like I should keep the knife on hand. But I have to say, if I were there instead of Arthur, with all the horror stories I’ve heard of humans getting lost so easily in the wild, just because they went for a bathroom break and took a wrong turn…I think getting lost is a bigger threat to humanity than any wild animal. So in that case, I’d keep my hand on the wall (after gingerly testing it out with a finger), and the knife on my belt… BUT if I had Arthur’s memories and expectations of a ‘battle’, I’d also think, well, once I encounter something I’m gonna have to take my hand off the wall, and be disoriented, anyways…so I’d just like carve landmarks at every path instead. So in the end! I think…hold onto the knife.

Fisher

remember: Arthur once said in Season 2 that holding a hand against the wall is the only way to make it out a maze!

SoapCarver

The best upside that I can think of for not holding the knife is if something jumps Arthur and it goes spiraling into the darkness. Perhaps having it sheathed, but on our person, is the best course of action.

SeerOfTime

My logic--taken directly from one of my good friends who does not listen to Malevolent--is that the torch, itself, can double as a weapon, allowing Arthur to keep one hand on the wall and not become turned around. Monsters, and even animals, probably aren't a huge fan of fire. There is a case to be made, however, for this torch going out.

SavageIvyy

But do we wanna risk the torch in any way? If the torch goes out or breaks in a conflict, that's a problem. Knives are made for stabby stabby. And im not keen on smearing Arthur's wound blood on the flesh wall

SeerOfTime

All good points! I honestly don't have strong opinions one way or the other; the fact this crevice may be a living creature is on my mind, as well, which may have me shying away from touching the wall.

Fisher

Arthur mentions there’s an active air current coming through the cave. I think this torch has a high chance of going out. In that case it would be better to still have a way to navigate if we stick close to a wall.

Bit

Knife voters consider: if we get attacked and try to strike back with our tiny knife, we might end up dropping the torch in the scuffle (the hole is damp). I don't think we can win a fight when John can't see anything and the maybe-monster can. We've won most of our fights by running and using our environment. We do NOT want to be running around in a pitch black cavern with no clue what's around us (aughhh my worst nightmare).

Fisher

trying to think about the facts here and why they lead me to believe chosing the wall is better based on things we know to be true already. like that torches can go out. the lighter can’t be reliable because it got soaked. the cavern is wet, our stuff could get wet, we could easily lose our light source. and in that case i think that being already near a wall we can use to navigate without sight is the smartest option.

Layali

ok, you've convinced me - I was thinking exactly of that line while typing out my thoughts. But I misremembered it! You writing out that line though clarified things for me! Cos I was remembering it like so: 'if you don't want to be lost in a maze then keep a hand on the wall' and I was thinking 'well there's no point in going back so what does it matter?' But like you said - to even think of MAKING IT OUT, you need to know where you're going - you need to keep your sense of direction, so you don't go around in circles, or go back and forth! So the thing that makes it possible to go back to the beginning makes it possible to reach the end, but I was focusing on the first half of that sentence. So thanks!! I'll vote for the wall. I guess I just felt like inevitably he'll take his hand off the wall at some confrontation, and then the whole choice would've been pointless. But tbh, running away, slash n dash, is always the best strategy for Arthur & co. I guess this is just a decision we'll have to make as blindly as Arthur and John. Maybe our priorities when making this choice shouldn't be what obstacles we'll encounter mid-way through the maze, but our goal from even entering it: which is presumably to find its end.

Layali

I was voting for knife, until another commentator (Fisher) mentioned that 'Arthur once said in Season 2 that holding a hand against the wall is the only way to make it out a maze!' I think our priorities when making this choice shouldn't be what obstacles we'll encounter mid-way through the maze, but our goal from even entering it: which is presumably to find it's end. So to even think of MAKING IT OUT, you need to know where you're going - you need to keep your sense of direction, so you don't go around in circles, or go back and forth! So the thing that makes it possible to go back to the beginning makes it possible to reach the end. Making our decision based on what's best for if we encounter something aggressive isn't the best, because we're really not well-prepared either way, and we'd be making the decision as blindly as Arthur n John. So instead make the decision based on our end goal! By the by, what happens if it's a tie?

Bit

Bad things ALWAYS happen when it’s a tie. Like, Harlan specifically makes it the worst case scenario to punish us for indecision

Fisher

ties are bad, but having a tie this early on isn’t something to be concerned about! unless stated by Harlan specifically, the poll is open until Sunday night, so we’ve got a few days

Jones

Dagger propaganda 2: Electric Boogaloo: Addressing some different arguments I've seen against dagger: 1) Arthur could hit any monsters with the torch instead: Technically he could, just like he could technically put his elbow against the wall or have John memorize the turns they take if they're holding the knife, but these kind of invalidate the vote. I think it's one or the other, if we vote wall and need to fight we lose, and if we vote knife and need to remember where we went we get lost. 2) Arthur said putting his hand against the wall is the only way to make it out of a maze: but IS it a maze? The entrance has been described as mouth like, and if we're going full magic school bus, the path from mouth to stomach is pretty straight. (Though to be honest I'm willing to bet it's not a straight path at all, but we don't actually know that. They can't see past the entrance and the hazards could be something entirely different) 3) The torch could go out in a scuffle: it could also go out a ton of other ways, like having to run from a monster instead of transforming into Stabby McStabface. If the torch does go out, yes they'd be more lost than if they had had their hand on the wall, but I'm not really sure what the benefit of knowing the way back out of the mouth is. If they run from a monster they'll have to take their hand off the wall and use the turns they memorized to backtrack to the exit, and then they're still trapped in the basement, and any monster could just follow them out. I think that unless there's a ladder hidden in the wall, it's a one way trip. I think the main advantage of wall is that it will help them navigate much better if it has twists and turns, which fair enough, but my hands itch to stab. Plus I still really don't want Arthur's blood on the weird wet walls of the not-mouth.

Isi

It's the Ides of March where Caesar was stabbed multiple times with a knife. It's also Pi(e) Day, referencing a baked good that you also cut with, that's right! A Knife! The universe has converged in such a beautiful way that you can't not vote knife!! Do it for the memes!!!

Alexi

the daggers already on our hip for easy access to be drawn with our free hand on the wall for sure!

Daniil Yarrow

My friends I have flipped to side wall, they will be safer that way, and potentially be able to feel wall vibrations if something is coming and give themselves enough time to draw the blade

Fjord

HOLD FAST WALL TRUTHERS

caleb owens

its a mouth, a beast. i think its a living maze. vast for miles. you cant kill it. the whole of the thing lives. the knife as strong as it is wont kill the beast. its better to know the way out if we have to leave

Erik

What immediate danger *just* inflicted serious physical damage on Arthur? That's right — the perilous *environment*. Time and time again, Arthur has found out the hard way that navigating an unknown space in the dark *will* get him killed. It's a lesson easily re-learned by anyone of any age who attempts to do so. It's a prime cause of accidental injury for (even sober) adults. Picture yourself having inattentively arrived somewhere you've never been before as the lights suddenly go out. This is a situation where normal sober adults will risk hurting themselves badly — on the corners of furniture, small elevations, even unexpectedly thick carpet edges (never mind stairwells). It makes sense in every way that Arthur should risk permanent injury from doing anything but methodically crawling on his stomach in *any* pitch black uncharted space. It makes sense in-universe, IRL, even narratively — as any situation wherein John is prevented from informing us of what Arthur's eyes can see, cannot last long (per definition).
