Pasted from the chapter comments: If the sound came from within the mist, that means John can't accurately see the origin point. At best they could run right by it and at worst they could run right into it. Not to mention Arthur has a nack for that loud breathing and Yorick isn't exactly quiet. The thing is clearly attracted to sound so theoretically just hiding somewhere quietly should keep them safe.

Ok, so hiding didn't often work in the past. However, I do believe Yorick knows more than he is letting on and we would be best served listening to him for now, Maybe stay skeptical about him in general but I do believe he doesn't quite want us dead, at least not yet anyway

Hide! Then they should be safe. And maybe they'll be able to see what's emerging from the fog. Running coul prove fatal. They could get lost or just simply run into whatever waits in the fog.

Also John’s instruct us most often to run (correct or not) and he doesn’t know any more about what’s going on than Arthur does, whereas yorick might actually know what’s coming at them. So hide it is.

The owl is a bad sign. That is exactly who Malam tried to warn Arther about. Also, if the fog is so thick that John can see very little beyond them, it’s probably best to hide. Running could likely send them right into the arms of something sinister.

I think we’re safe listening to Yorick for the time being. Likely until the Hand is completed. I’ve said before that I trust him but let’s be real all bets are off once he gets what he wants. But for now, hide!
