Seriously. It's seems pretty obvious that Harlan threw in the "alternate timeline" thing in as a way to say "we aren't gonna sweat the historical details here, don't worry about it" and our collective response is to ask about the made up historical details.

I don't believe it would have made much difference which question was chosen. I think Harlan wanted our guys going in blind, so any question asked would have elicited a non-answer. We are given only the illusion of control so that events unfold as was planned even before we asked a question.
