Pls vote common room the friar makes a good point.

Layali

It would be the funniest thing if Barnabas hadn’t killed Gerard. With all that drinking…he went off to take a piss, came back to dead Gerry, knew about the passage so assumed Friar & Warin did it, and is now off to hunt down medieval Bonnie & Clyde, drunk off his ass.

Layali

I’m not srs btw. Although…Evrard did leave Barnabas alone for a while in the study. We take it to implicate Barnabas, but it also implicates Evrard, master of the house, keeper of the black stone, he-of-unknown-motives :p.

Common room has more exits to escape, if needed. Friar's room only has the door and the tunnel. I wouldn't want to be chased through a tunnel.

Quinn

I’d say go through the common room. Whether or not Barnabas knows about the passage, we have a chance to sneak up behind him regardless — and then we won’t risk him waiting outside the friar’s room to pounce on us. Also, there is more space and more than one exit in the common room, versus trapping ourselves in a sealed off room and/or getting corralled into a tight hallway with only one exit.

Quinn

My thoughts exactly! We do NOT want to be corralled into that hall 😭

Layali

How would Barnabas grab Gerard’s dagger to kill him with, and yet his body is found in a peaceful + unaware pose, reading a book? Besides why would B be so devoted to the same murder method? Just grab a candelabra and go to town on him, or a chair or whatever. ofc Barnabas is a current threat no matter what actually happened.

Alexi

he doesnt know they went to the friars room at all. he wont look for them there, not this quickly

blacklightRIOT

bruh ima be real im not sold on barney being what we need to worry about here lmfao

Jellybean

secret tunneeeellll... secret tunnellll.... through the castle.... secret secret secret secret tunnel..!!!

Queen

if you’re interested in very long discussion join the discord! we have pages and pages of info. i combed through part 48 to examine barnabus and i gotta say it just looks so obvious he and evrard are working together. vote common room yall

Alexi

he would not be looking for them at the friars room, they said they were going to talk to the witch

Nicky

It’s very likely there is more than one secret passage in this place and Barnabus has been here a week. Plenty of time to explore and find them. Going through the main areas leaves Arthur and the Friar open to being spied on and ambushed from other secret spots / hiding places they don’t know about

Sophie

I would like to add that the analysis Queen made was very thorough and clearly deserves to be read.

Layali

If Barnabas knows about other secret paths + is seeking us out, and knows we’re headed to Alia - why would he take the common path? Why do we assume he’d walk from the study to Alia the normal way? So then why would taking the common room path have us behind him, and not him behind us? Have us just fully exposed? If you want to kill a Goliath, isn’t it better to be sneaky about it? I think the common room path, while sounding like common sense, could end up with BARNABAS sneaking up behind us. While the secret path has two known exits we can accommodate for, the common room has many more we can’t calculate for. For the secret path, he could be standing at the other end. For the common room, he could be standing at any door. He could be swinging from the rafters and drop on our heads like some cultish Batman for all we know.

Layali

The method the two want to take is to sneak up on Barnabas. And since we’re in his domain right now, I think it’s easier to sneak up on him through one contained secret path, rather than by walking through the whole house and every room with all the other secret paths they might contain (and which might themselves contain our angry scotsman). It’s not that I think going through the secret path is ideal, I just think if we want to sneak up on him, that’s the most aligned choice to that goal. It’s not that I think the secret path is hidden from him, it’s that it’s the most contained, isolated. Besides, we already told B we would be back soon from Alia, so if I were him…why would I head to Alia and kill them? I’d just hide and wait where I knew they’d come back - because they said they would be back soon! And he knows the witch won’t talk to them, so they’ll be back very quick indeed! Esp the prince who seems so considerate of poor Gerard, and would be worried for him.

5 bucks evrard knifed the first dude to get the murder ball rolling WHY ISNT ANYONE ASKING WHY HE "NEEDS" TO SHOW ONE OF THEM THE STONE ???? HELLO ????????

Thaelia

True. At least with the secret passage, there are only two ways he can come at us, from the front or behind. And presumably the Friar’s door is still locked.

HD

The Friar's door is locked. They need to take the Secret Passage at the very least to unlock that door to use the passage later.

Lettie Black

Barnabas was already able to hide out of sight in the hall and catch Arthur by surprise after he hid the ring and left the common room. At least in the secret passage, they’ll be able to see him coming if he’s there.

Thaelia

I’m a little torn on this one, but I'm going for the secret passage. While it’s pretty much a guarantee after a week of exploring the castle that Barnabas knows about the secret passage, that doesn’t mean it’s going to be the first place he looks for us. Presumably the Friar’s door is locked so he’d have to break it down before confronting us that way, unless he doubles back and tries to get at us from the passage exit in the common area, which to be fair is possible. Being out in the open in the common area has a lot of risks. Barnabas could come at us from any direction, and there could be another secret passage/hiding place that he’s discovered during his week in the castle that he’ll use to get the drop on us. However, in the secret passage we can potentially hide until we choose to reveal ourselves and only have to worry about two possible way Barnabas could come at us from. (I’ll admit that only leaves us very limited re: potential exits if we have to run though!) On the other hand: do we want to have this fight in the tight quarters of the passage, or out in the open? Out in the open give Arthur more room to maneuver and end things as quickly as possible, and for the Friar to potentially assist or at the very least not get in the way. But the risk of a surprise attack is way higher.

Layali

If Barnabas has killed both Langward and Gerard, how did he do it? By sneaking up on them and slitting their throats. I don’t want to go through the common room and walk all the way to Alia’s hoping to sneak up on him. We’d be exposed instead. He could sneak up on us - esp if he is the killer as that is his MO. He could be hidden in another secret path and spy on us. If he’d already been to Alia and saw we’re not there he could have hidden away to spy on us, since form his perspective the hunt has already started and the way he hunts is sneaky and ambushy. Then there’s the possibility he never went to Alia, and has instead hidden and waited for us to come back to the common room WE SAID we’d be going back to. And now once we leave through it he’ll spot us and ambush us.

Layali

What did we gain from choosing to go with Friar, rather than Barnabas and Gerard? Knowledge and access to the secret path! Choosing the common room makes literally the entire past chapter nearly pointless ( we gained a tool then threw it away), especially bc the Friar’s door is now locked! So now we can’t even use the secret room in the future, if we don’t go back through the path now and unlock the Friar’s door. And Friar is so suspicious in his reasoning. He’s like ‘let’s go run out into the open when we’ve got a perfectly serviceable secret path right behind us’! How many times has he lied? Twice, and every time he’s lied about going or wanting to go into the secret path! Last chapter was literally all about him lying about wanting to lock his doors and wait till morning when he really wanted to run to the secret path! Why would Barnabas be waiting at the friars door anyway? I think he’s lying. I think he wants to keep the secret path to himself. I think he’s banking on us dying soon (like as soon as we leave the library room and expose ourselves) and he’s gonna peace out and run back to the secret path. Please remember how Friar was sooo persuasive about hiding in his room, brought up so many ‘good’ points, even persisted lying when we forced our way into his room and punched him to the floor! The only reason we knew he was lying was bc of John noticing! And what was his lie about?? The secret path! The point is - his argument rn to leave the library and leave the SECRET path behind, might not have been made in good faith! He’s already proven to be persuasive and a liar! This guy is a coward! Why would he, when faced between a secret path and a common path through a bazillion rooms, choose the latter?

Layali

If we choose the common room path, aren’t we throwing away the only thing we gained from choosing Friar last chapter, rather than Barnabas and Gerard? The ONLY thing we gained from going with Friar is finding out about this secret path, and now we won’t take it? And even worse, leave one of its two entrances locked??? So we can’t even use it easily in the future?

Layali

Why are we assuming the lying and cowardly Friar’s argument is done in good faith? The easiest way to tell if a good liar is lying, is if it’s against their nature. And cowardly Friar who feels powerless…wants to abandon his one and only tool?

HD

The passage becomes more and more risky the longer it remains unused. Right now it is a clear, safe path to get through the castle. The common room is too exposed. Plus, there might be something to discover by spying on the common room instead of walking through it.

Fisher

I find it very worrying that BJ literally tells us “The choice is not obvious” and many of the arguments for the common room route are that it’s obviously correct because of the fact it’s more open. vote secret passage

Fisher

another BIG BIG BIG thing i’ve noticed is people advocating for the common room because Arthur would have more freedom of movement and ways to escape. but *so would Barnabus.* who has a much more intimate understanding of this place. and also, we’ve got Arthur here literally saying he doesn’t think he’s going to make it much longer. he was dizzy standing after sitting and resting for an hour, he’s shivering, he’s weak and only getting weaker. so why would we want to put him in a situation where he’d be forced to run the heck around? if they aren’t successful in sneaking up on Barnabus and get jumped by him, having more places he can try to run to is going to be the opposite of helpful to him.

blacklightRIOT

bro everybody doing paragraphs and debating the best option im just goin on vibes. all vibes homie. no thoughts just vibes

lenore

Pretty sure we locked the friars door so he can't be waiting for us in their. Also he doesn't know we went into the passage to begin with I see no downsides

Marina Bennett

Voting for the common room means we’d have to trust the friar’s judgement. I don’t.
