Sensational writing and positively sublime acting here, Harlan, holy shit. The pain and defeat in Arthur’s voice is palpable. Then, Oscar’s letter being washed away allowing John to inspire and reinvigorate Arthur through their shared love of art and poetry was absolutely crushing (in the best way). What a perfect way to conclude the letter and push on. John and Arthur’s bond is soul crushingly beautiful — as is the writing. Thank you for your incredible work and dedication to this story

The way I interpreted john "reading" the poem is that he made it up. Oscar's letter washed away a while ago and that phrase (in the fell clutch of circumstance) is too specific.
