I’m voting retreat because 1) getting trapped is never smart 2) the books he knocked off the shelf immediately give him away 3) there are other routes to explore (the grocer, research, confront whoever just walked in) and we can always check this room later.

I'm voting retreat. Marie does not move fast; especially up stairs. They would have time to beat a hasty retreat and this way they won't potentially get trapped.

John is protesting for good reason. Neither hiding from nor confronting Marie become easier or safer *inside* her secret eldritch passageway (about which we know nothing). Anything that can be said or done inside of it is safer outside of it. Besides, I don't expect a pursuer to expect *us* to still be hidden in the room with the opened secret door. I mean, who could resist the temptation of a secret passageway!? Anyone would assume we must have went inside, merely from seeing it open. That goes for the butcher as well as Marie. All the better for us then if we haven't.
