I propose leaving the mess of books and the ajar secret doorway as-is, but hiding out-of-sight somewhere else in the room... To run upstairs and play dumb about the strewn-about books is bad. To run into the secret passage to hide is even worse. But simply observing Marie's reaction upon entering from some mundane, unexpected side angle vantage point would reveal a ton about her internal state and her intents towards us. If she pulls a knife and chases after us, we shut the passage behind her. If she flees in panic at seeing it open, we know to fear whatever is lurking in there instead. If she inspects the dust, we know the dust matters. Etc. Either way, covering up our intrusion now seems out of the picture.
