Sorry random innocent people but oscar is my newest blorbo. Im voting protect oscar and search for a new host

Maddi

No question we can’t risk being stuck with this stone

Isi

As much as I want to protect Oscar I still think it's worth it to try to solve the problem for good than actively choose to pass the problem on to someone else. The part that gets me is John has been trying to process some stuff with all his questions of what makes someone deserving of death and when it's okay to do otherwise morally wrong things, and I fear that this is a case of taking on the role of judge jury and executioner by deciding what random person we may not even know "deserves" this fate is going to give him the wrong idea.

I am 100% convinced this week. We are an investigator-it's our job to investigate. May end badly, but if we don't even try to fix this what are we actually doing? I'm for investigating and looking into Scratch

Alasdair Thanisch

We've only had Scratch's version of how this works and no time to stop and think. Definitely think we should look into it further. Repercussions might be that we have to pass it off to some random person, but there might be something we can do with more information. If we lose Oscar or ourself, there might not be anything anyone can do.

But isn't that what the research option does, give us some time to stop and think instead of running around trying to find a suitable host?

Amy

I’m voting look into Scratch. I don’t want to risk hurting an innocent person (or Oscar), and worst comes to worst, we head back to the hospital and pass the stone off to someone on their deathbed. That way, Scratch will still be in a weakened body and it’ll be easier to get him later.

As others noted, Arthur is an investigator, so that path makes to most sense to me. Also, what would John learn/take from either choice, especially since he is really grappling with morality right now. Do we set the example of passing arbitrary judgement on others to escape consequences of our own actions Or Do we set the example of trying hardest to solve/fix things, even if there’s a risk of failure

Nicky

One more thought: The way the poll is worded, it’s not a guarantee that Oscar gets the stone if researching doesn’t work out. And even if he does get it, we aren’t likely to fully lose him immediately - history of hosts being themselves when awake and it taking time for Scratch to keep them asleep more long term

Fisher

Here is why I think that finding another host is a Bad Idea: I know some people have mentioned the Butcher or Larson as candidates but I think both of those options arent gonna work if we go with Arthur trying to find another host. Larson’s clearly the final boss, and if we just go and find him right now then we’d be totally screwing any semblance of a plan that Arthur was cooking up that involved waiting for Noel’s help - he told him to call him back next morning after he had time to do some digging - and also makes the whole thing about getting Daniel’s ring totally worthless. I don’t think theres any way for him get to Larson in time and I think overall its a bad idea. And the Butcher, who I think would be a more accessible option, still wouldnt be very easy to get to. And giving Scratch a body as strong and capable as the Butcher’s would be bad. The most likely thing I think Arthur would do is try and find someone else he could hand it off to, and I think that scenario would be a horrible place to put both he and John in mentally. I recall after Oscar shared his story John questioned Arthur about killing Uncle and if it was “deserved” and the first name he mentions when he suggests Arthur find another host is Larson. I think feeding that idea of John’s could steer him down an unpleasant thought pattern that would probably lead to some very significant consequences. Not only that but Arthur would be expending way more energy physically stressing himself out while searching for somebody, which I think could make him passing out somewhere way more likely than if he’s with Oscar actively discussing plans and looking through the book.

Fisher

Why I think looking for another host is a BAD IDEA right now continued. If we choose to go and find some other host it is, in a way, the “easier” of the two options, aside from the possible time (and of course mental toll) spent searching. But after that, its no longer their problem and they could wipe their hands of it, because their agreement to find/save Hattie would be fulfilled, and do they *really* have time to go on a goose chase to defeat Scratch for real this time afterwards? I don’t think they do, no matter how badly they might wish to do something more about the situation. It would be basically placing the duty to fix things onto someone else - probably Oscar, lbr - while they get to move on freely. Whereas putting in the time to sit down with Oscar and try to find a solution together is more effort, and more personal, because Arthur would be focused on setting right the mistake that HE made by releasing Scratch and taking the blame himself. Especially so if it ends up not being a simple fix, and Oscar becomes the new host - something that I think OSCAR HIMSELF would prefer, given his priestly morals, than the burden of Scratch being placed on an unlucky stranger - But Arthur would have tried his best to do what he could, even if that means accepting his role in how things shake out for Oscar and the blame for letting it get to this point in the first place. And I think that would be a better message for John to internalize right now while he’s so obviously struggling with thoughts of morality in the face of difficult choices. Take responsibility and do your best to fix things VS Offload the problem onto someone else and wipe your hands of it.

Fisher

FINAL POINT: I know how many people feel really attached to Oscar and their gut call is to protect him at all costs but I urge those people to consider what decision Oscar himself would prefer. He clearly holds a lot of guilt over how things have worked out for Hattie and Marie - who he helped cover up her husbands murder, which was something I totally forgot - and his strong sense of justice, clear desire to help, and priestly moral code would dictate that he be the one to bear the burden of the curse instead. Which would not kill him! I know some people seem concerned for his safety in that regard, but remember that Oscar will not be totally doomed in this scenario. If we choose to look into the book and find something useful then, even if it isn’t an outright way to defeat Scratch, Oscar can take that knowledge and apply it as a way to contain Scratch temporarily until further action can be taken. He’s already helped do it before. If we drop Scratch on some poor soul then no matter how much they “deserve” it for being a bad person, they’d still have 0 knowledge on how to contain Scratch, who would then have free reign to terrorize like he’s doing now. So while we might save Oscar from this fate, it would be an exponentially more worse scenario for literally the entire population of the city.

Megs

How funny would it be to spend all night running after Larson to plant the stone on him, risking life and limb in the process, only to have the solution be on page 1 of the book?

Flamia

So glad to see the poll leaning into looking for Scratch instead of condemning another soul to being a host for that creature. There's killing, there's deserving worse than death, and then there's.... well, that.
