I TRUST OUR GOLDEN BOY!

I’m gonna pick to trust John. He might have a plan. It’s been made pretty clear at this point that he won’t tell Arthur what’s going on - maybe he CAN’T, the deal with Kayne might literally prevent John from doing so. And based on the Kayne scene in S3, John clearly feels very guilty about the deal and he made it under extreme duress. And if you love someone, sometimes you just need to trust them.

K.M.

Okay. LOTS OF THEORIZING HERE: Assuming Kayne is Nyarlathotep, and if you listened to CoC game 2 there are a lot of parallels in what’s happening. In game 2 Nyarlathotep was looking for the Black Stone. But the Black Stone is a blind spot - he *cannot* find it. This ties in to episode 20, where Kayne tells Arthur that “there’s a time and place I can’t quite see.” I believe this is Arthur finding the stone. If the item they’re stealing is the stone, it will hide them from Kayne. I believe this vote isn’t going to prevent ANY of that, it is simply to see what page John and Arthur are on with each other. (Would John actually tell Arthur? Is he *able*? Will he lash out and they go into this fighting? Hard to know.) For now, I’m voting trust, because, much like Arthur said: “I need to trust in something”

Monster Energie

I don't think John can explain even if he wanted to

Fisher

Here is one of my points for why I think we should trust John here: It’s obviously something that he either cannot tell Arthur due to being bond by a part of Kayne’s deal, or he is convinced leaving Arthur in the dark is only way to achieve what he’s been tasked with - or, potentially, to defy it, which he would not want to let Arthur in on until the exact right moment. Considering I bet that Arthur’s participation in whatever this is is key, and if John has a plan to defy Kayne, he has to be cautious about how much information he shares with him because certainly Kayne is listening and would know when John goes against their deal. Think about what we have here. An item - most certainly the Black Stone - of eldritch power. What happened the last time they encountered such an item? What could John have learned from that experience? He has already been pondering the woman - who I believe to be Lilith, an entity who tends to oppose Nyarlathotep, who I believe is involved - and I don’t think it’s a huge reach to suggest that John has a wacky plan brewing. After all, he’s learned from the best!

Maddi

I’m very conflicted but Arthur needs to find out about the deal sooner or later and this close to the finale I worry we might not get another chance. I’d much rather him confront John now than get blindsided when they’re in the middle of fighting the order

Brisk

He already suspects something is going on so he's not going in "blindly" it's more about whether or not he trusts John knows what he's doing and I think he does

Fisher

But why would John suddenly tell him about the deal now? He hasn’t yet any of the other obvious moments he could have. There’s something keeping him from saying it, and I don’t think that suddenly confronting him now would make him open up.

Nicky

John’s found a roundabout way to share some things so far. Asking for more could help him further develop creativity and problem solving to spill any other potentially relevant details that it would help Arthur to be aware of without coming 100% “clean” about the deal itself / anything that would get heads popped. Maybe John is brewing a secret plan, but is that wise considering his memory lapses and that we don’t know what’s causing it? They could get to the cult meeting, something trigger John’s memory issues and then Arthur’s all “ok, what’s the plan” and John doesn’t have a clue

Brisk

So far John's been pretty up front about plan details, he just is avoiding elaboration on why the plan is the plan. With what Arthur knows so far I think he could handle things if John gets a bit hazy

HakureiRyuu

I don't know what it is they're trying to steal, but I think the deal is to give the object to Kayne. still, I agree that in all likelihood John physically cannot tell Arthur what is going on, and trying to press him on it will just lead to needless friction. besides, with Kayne as the big bad of this story, I'm okay with the plot going in a direction in which he gets what he wants, because I think even then there would still be a chance to win.

Megs

If I were Arthur, personally I would confront John, but I think it’s more narratively satisfying for him to trust John so that’s how I’m voting!

I've been super on the fence for this vote so I'm gonna post my reasoning for both sides. Thoughts for trusting: - John might not be able to tell us any new or pertinent information but this could affect the tone of the relationship going into the last episode of the season and that is a dangerous thing to play lightly with - John may try to give us more answers than he is allowed to give which could either get Kayne's attention early or cause us some kind of harm - this season has had a lot to say about truth and lies and faith and doubt and I have typically come down on the side of Truth and Faith which I would want to be reflected at the end of the season as well - this just feels better, narratively. idk how to words it,, but it just feels Right. Trust is a heart vote - if we're going to end up at the stone no matter what, then I would like us to be on the same page and working together as smoothly as possible - maybe John has a plan - there's a very good theory that kayne can't see the exact time and place of the Black Stone which makes me think that it might be safer for us to talk or ask questions when we get there - I want to put my faith in John so badly. I know that he hasn't been the most reliable recently but I really really want to I want to trust him

Dipity

Thoughts for confronting: - it doesn't necessarily have to be a violent/angry confrontation. Arthur has been remarkably gentle with John this season and the tone from the end of the last chapter leans that way - our last vote was all about how we shouldn't walk into a situation blind (lol) when we have a potential source of information right there and we need as much info as possible to survive this - while I'd love the believe that John has a plan, it's just as likely that he's just trying to fulfill the deal and be done with it, like he was aiming for with scratch - a confrontation may get us more information but at least won't Lose us information - we can have faith in John but still ask questions - If there's anything he absolutely can't tell us then he probably still won't say it but we Might get a direct confirmation that he's sworn to silence on certain things whereas right now it's speculation - John lying to us and trying to kill oscar was all him, not the deal, I love him and want to give him our faith but I worry about doing that Too much

Dipity

All that being said, I'm currently on confront but that was literally the result of a coin flip so I may change as more arguments and reasoning come up over the weekend

DuckDuckDuck

Sometimes I make choices not because they’re necessarily the wisest choice but instead when they’re the best choice for the story. After the progression of this last season, choosing to trust John, for better or for worse, just seems like the right direction for the story. Also, Arthur sees John as a friend and a partner, so I think he would ultimately trust him.

Fisher

I’m going with the option to put faith in John because I think that dealing with Scratch has given him some sort of idea that he cannot say to Arthur outloud due to Kayne no doubt being able to listen in. It’s what I’ve wanted to happen for a long time now: John learns from Arthur, Arthur teaches John, and Arthur didn’t give and fought for another way even though John was against him. Coupled with the fact that he tells Arthur he spent the night thinking about the mysterious woman, I suspect that he might be cooking something up. He even says right here that he isn’t exactly asking for Arthur’s trust, he’s asking for faith, which has been reoccurring throughout this season as a major theme. Arthur isn’t going into this blind. He knows there is something John is hiding from him. He even suspects Kayne’s involvement. Arthur isn’t exactly being tricked here. He’s being asked by John to have faith in him despite this, after being as brazenly open as he ever has been about this - as he *can* be, most likely, and I think that’s something Arthur wants to do.

Fisher

This vote reminds me very much of the vote to either keep the stone or leave it with Oscar, and I was all for leaving it because I was so concerned that it would go wrong if Arthur had it on him that I neglected to think about the importance of showing John that you can’t just give up, which is what I hope he’s internalized.

SeerOfTime

There are a LOT of great thoughts in this comment section. I truly understand why it might be beneficial to vote either way; I've never been so conflicted in my entire life. On one hand, putting our trust in John would probably mean the absolute WORLD to him, even if going cold-turkey into a minefield of cultists has the VERY high potential to blow up in our faces, especially considering John's memory issues. But he may have a plan and, perhaps, telling Arthur about it isn’t the best call. On the other hand, pressing John for more answers may very well cause a fight and create even more unnecessary friction between the two of them, and that's also not something we need going into a big finale. (And it is possible a fight wouldn't occur, given how patient and understanding Arthur has been this season. I'm SO proud of him. Sgdjdbdbd) Then again, what is really the harm of prodding for more answers? John still might not tell us anything useful and, as others have mentioned, is this even a deal he is allowed to TALK about? We have no idea. I have a feeling I'll be bouncing back and forth on these choices all week, but, for now, I'm placing my trust in John. 🙏

Teakettle

I am voting for forcing a confrontation, not because I don't love John, I do, but I don't think that John is a rational actor right now. Add to this meta knowledge of what we can assume Kayne wants, and walking into this blind feels like a very bad idea

One of the things that stuck with me about this podcast is how much trust Arthur puts in John when it really counts, even perhaps before it's deserved. Near the season 1 finale he says he trusts that John has changed enough to not "abandon" him, to which John says he shouldn't, it'll be the death of him. In the season 2 finale when facing the King, Arthur reiterates this trust, even when previously that season he broke that trust in a major way. It's also worth noting that when speaking to the King, Arthur defends his feelings about John by saying "I need to trust in something." Season 3 ends with the whole "Do you trust me" exchange, beginning with Arthur asking John during the final battle because Arthur had a plan he couldn't say aloud, and then of course John asking Arthur to trust him which sets their course to New York to eventually culminate in this moment, creating a lovely symmetry as he asks for his trust "one more time." But season 4 has been a challenge to Arthur's trust in John. John has clearly been hiding information, forgetting people, outright lying, and resorting to old fashioned manipulation. This has been one of the factors leading Arthur to putting increased trust in others such as Oscar and Noel. By all accounts Arthur has been given every reason to not trust John, perhaps finally learning what John warned him of back in season 1; if it doesn't lead to his own death, it would certainly lead to others' deaths like how he literally tried to get Oscar killed. BUT PERHAPS FAITH IS A BETTER WORD. This of course brings to mind the confrontation with Daniel, a situation where Arthur knew Daniel had no reason to trust him, to have faith in him, to realize that there are things Daniel can't know, but asks it of him anyway. And this turns into a powerful and healing moment for their relationship. This is, beat for beat, the same situation John is in now. He knows he hasn't earned Arthur's trust; he finally even admitted he's been having problems forgetting people. He knows there are things he's aware of that he can't tell Arthur and even says as much. And despite everything, he still asks for faith. And goddamn it, I cannot deny the delicious narrative potential of Arthur continuing to trust John when it matters most. If nothing else, they will be united in being reluctant as hell going through with this: John because of a deal he's trapped in, and Arthur because he knows John is hiding things. But this also feels like a reversal of the Bedrock, when Arthur was in a bad way and needed John's support to help him kill Uncle, even though John didn't understand why this was so important. But it was important, and Arthur needed that support more than John could have known before agreeing. I think John needs this support more than we currently know. And goddamn it, I cannot deny the twisted irony of Arthur "fuck cultists, fuck religion" Lester putting faith in his funky little head god despite everything.

Patreon is refusing to let my vote go through, but I'm here for trusting John 💛

Misraa

Voting to trust John. I don't think confronting him will give Arthur anymore meaningful information. John has been very carefully picking his words and is clearly limited on what he can reveal. Pushing him may just make him frustrated and upset Arthur isn't trusting him, worse he may break a part of the deal or get Kayne's attention if he does say too much. Arthur and John have grown so much, it feels narratively right to give him this trust. They've only gotten as far as they have by trusting in each other and working together. Arthur has asked for John's trust in the past and has stated over and over he trusts in John, even when sometimes it seems like the wrong thing logically. Emotionally though he needs John and someone he can put his faith in. Hopefully John has learned from their fight with the creature in the mines (not being able to reveal a full plan to the other, having faith even when not knowing the full plan) and their dealing with Scratch (not giving up and taking the easy way out of a deal) and John does have a plan to get out of this deal or at least minimize the repercussions.

Try to do it in browser on the computer instead of the app or mobile!

1) I really want to let John play out his scheme, I want to see it come to fruition cause I can't imagine it won't be fun to listen to. >:D 2) it seems like the choice is either Arthur breaking John's trust now for certain, or John breaking Arthur's trust later BUT with the chance that Arthur's trust'd be actually well placed in case John is actually making a good decision here (and we just don't know it)

PrettyBoyDevito

i say vote trust john we already know john is withholding information from arthur. we've been in this situation before and he didn't reveal anything then, so why would he now? john would likely only get upset that arthur is going back on his word (that he JUST gave during their previous fight) about how arthur would begin trusting him. look, tbh i do think that john is gonna betray arthur. however, i also think it would be way more narratively in interesting if arthur give all of his trust to john now only for it to totally blow up in his face later. i want to see the drama!!

Danii

I think Trusting John is the way to go because I think if John COULD tell Arthur, he would. At this point? Absolutely. But I bet Kayne insisted he can't tell him why. That's what'll get the most drama and the most enjoyable 'show' and it'll make John squirm the most and make Arthur have the best reactions.

lana

i say we trust john for no other reason than that i support women’s rights AND women’s wrongs <3

Raven Fritz

GUYS I just realized that Nolan, the detective, is the same person as Adam, the guy that was in Arthur's Coma dream. They sound alike and both of them said "Shuffle off this mortal coil, what you've never heard Hamlet before." Its too much of a coincidence.

Erik

I vote trust John, despite him actively being up to something (even by his own admission). For the very simple reason that he tells Arthur *that* he plans something, while omitting *what* exactly. He forewarns of the existence of a plan to the benefit of Arthur, but omits all details about the plan to the detriment of anyone listening in.
