Hello All!

Jayne...what on Serenity are you playing at?! I am so glad that Mal saw right through his BS and pulled him up on it in private. Gave him a scare but he deserved that for what he did! Simon really came out of his shell in this episode. Proven yet again how intelligent he is and how good he is in his field too. River being so proud of her brother warmed my heart and it looks as though her future is bright too???

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Always love the River-centric episodes as she's my favorite character. I mean, I guess technically this is more a Jayne episode, as he's the one with an arc here, but still...

AC10

I hope you are feeling better now. So excited to watch this. Ohh.. yea going by the intro not feeling better. I'm so sorry. Sending you best wishes. This has to be my favorite episode so far. I don't feel like there was a 60 second part of it that was week. The whole thing start to finish was great.

DM DC

Sending many well-wishes! Really fun reaction. So much fun to be on this journey with you. This episode is just sooo good! A good ol fashioned heist, with a bit of a twist. What happened to River with what little info they gave us this episode just sounds so terrible beyond imagining. I feel so bad for her. Just wanna give her a great big bear hug. The Two by Two Hands of Blue guys (not sure their title) sort of give me the Gentalman vibes from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. In my opinion the creepiest foe she faced in that show. These two guys from Firefly give me those same vibes.

Audra Foxgrove

One little thing that I wanted to touch on was you mentioning river and how you were sort of relating or empathizing with her struggles by thinking of times where your emotions can be messed with because of your brain chemicals and hormones. When Simon describes it as her feeling everything and being unable to NOT feel everything, for me it triggers a different thread of relatability. This is one that has changed over the years drastically for me because I always empathized with river about this but I honestly can’t recall what my emotional touch stone was for it before. Now that I am a mother to a young child with special needs, I automatically have this relation in my head with my daughter and her struggles. Not only her struggles with her disabilities, but even with hard times with severe tantrums when she was a toddler and the idea of a little person with big feelings that they physically are not able to control yet. It’s actually so heartbreaking if you really think about it and put yourself in River’s shoes: you are an adult (or nearly— you’re a teen), fully autonomous, intelligent person, and yet the world around you is constantly dangerous and terrifying and confusing. Your feelings are intense and changeable, and make no sense to anyone least of all you. And of course there’s clearly much more that we don’t know yet…

I haven't commented much on these reactions just because I'm less invested than Buffy or Angel, but I'm still enjoying your Firefly journey!

MAL: Could've gotten off with Shepherd Book at the Bathgate Abbey. This episode brothers me because I would have expected there to be more characters of Chinese ancestry on the Core Worlds, but their not on Ariel, either.

Robert

Sorry to hear about Grayson, this might sound horrid, but kids have pretty strong recuperative powers, so he'll bounce back pretty quick. You need to focus on you. Mal said near the beginning that the shepherd got dropped at a monastery. The whole episode was very good. The heist that Simon planned out was incredible. Even Mal stated that he had a decent criminal mind. I loved that Jayne uttered his lines. He put a lot of work into memorizing them, he was going to say them. In the hospital we got to see Simon in his element, cool, authoritative, totally in charge. When he saved that man in recovery, even Jayne was impressed The two men represented the dark side of the alliance. Think of them as black ops. Also we get a glimpse into what was done to River. They killed her ability to "table"(?) her thoughts so that she processes information all at one. In the last episode the engine exploded, but River seemed to know it was going to happen. She noticed something that probably everyone else noticed, but just disregarded.

Michele

I liked this episode, partly because we got some more information about River and what was done with her. She's a mystery that I need solved! It was also nice to see that the gang came out ahead with all that loot. So they shouldn't be hurting for money for a while. I was feeling the same as you regarding Mal. Glad to see more layers to him and see that he considers River and the doctor as part of the crew now and to be protected. That's a huge risk for him, but it does show that he must have a really good core to him, even if he has to push it aside now and then.

Polly

Always enjoy a good heist story. Lucky for the crew it wasn't Kaylee's or Zoe's time of the month, or they'd have been in the back of the boat crying and eating ice cream instead of doing their jobs.

Brian Dworak

Great episode! As Polly said, I too enjoy a sneaky heist story. I was rather tense at points, as if I was watching it for the first time. I will say, though, I would much prefer doing what Kaylee was doing. My grandfather, Bruno, was a welder for many years and even built a large garage/workplace in the backyard. Let's put it this way: you could park four cars in it and still have plenty of space to work. My heart was racing during the scene where Simon was saving that patient and made me flash back to September 17, 2021 when I was brought back to life at the hospital. It had a positive effect on me because I was always afraid of death, but I'm not anymore. That was oddly personal... The Blue Hands dudes gave me vibes of The Gentlemen in Buffy S4E10. I don't know if you've seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the death of the doctor reminded me of a scene from that film - no spoilers. Mal was pretty extreme with Jayne, but as Lucifer might say, "You need to be punished, mercenary douche". During your outro you made an excellent point about the scene with Jayne asking Mal to make something up to tell the crew instead of the truth because he didn't want their last memory of him to be a negative one. I was nodding my head the whole time. Your discussion of not being able to fully control things with your body at certain times was also excellent and relatable. There are times when I have panic attacks, and lately it's usually when I can't find my phone, even though I know it's in the house. However, even after I find it and know everything is fine, my mind is back to normal but my body is not; heart racing, hands shaking, breathing quickly. It's a very odd feeling. I'm going to put some information that I found interesting about the ambulance ship down below from The Firefly and Serenity Database. If interested, check it out. Thanks Dak! Clear! The only vehicle of this type featured to date in the television series in the episode "Ariel" is based on the Mil Mi-24 "Hind" Russian helicopter. The full-size ambulance ship prop was originally a mockup Puma owned by Air Hollywood, modified to look like the Mi-24, who later sold it to Mark Thompson's Aviation Warehouse. Firefly production designer Carey Meyer rented the prop for the episode and the crew modified and repainted it for its new role. After filming the episode, the prop was returned to the warehouse, who later sold it to the El Dorado Aircraft Supply Co. Ltd. El Dorado kept it in a scrapyard in the Mojave Desert, where it would stay for years until being found and bought by the "Ariel Ambulance Rescue Group" on May 6, 2006. It was later restored and displayed (along with props from Serenity donated by The Prop Store of London) at many conventions and has been signed by Firefly crew members including Tim Minear, Jane Espensen, Loni Peristere, and Jewel Staite. The body-carriers used to carry the "dead" Simon and River into the hospital are actually modern automobile rooftop cargo boxes made by Thule.

i saw someone once make an interesting observation that jayne's actions here seem to stem directly from the events of jaynestown; him being a "good" person got an innocent kid killed and if you recall, it really upset him when he and mal were talking at the end. this episode, he tries to go back to his duplicitous ways and not only does it backfire on him, he also feels like shit about it and he finds he actually what the others think of him. ugh, imagine the development we could've gotten if we'd had even just a full season, or even 2 seasons! re: the similarities of hormones to river's situation, i am firmly of the belief that PMS doesn't make us more out of control emotional but rather less willing to deal with bullshit lol

Julian Welton

I think one thing some people misunderstand about this episode is that Mal WAS going to kill Jayne, he wasn't just trying to scare him. Mal is not the kind of guy to let a liability like that stay on the team and certainly not the kind to let someone who betrayed his crew/family go free. What saved Jayne was his guilt and remorse. Him asking Mal not to tell the others meant he regretted what he did and that he does actually care about the crew. That's why Mal decided to give him another chance.

Shaun Houghton

Chinese? Really, Chinese? Not Asian, but specifically Chinese. I would suggest your expectations borders the ludicrous and irrelevant.

Eric Hunter

It is said somewhere that China and basically NATO were the powers that organized the evacuation of Earth That Was, and the crew curses in Chinese, so yes.

AC10

I agree 100%. In a previous episode Jayne told Mal to his face he didn't turn him into the Alliance because "The money wasn't good enough." Now this episode his reason for turning in the Doc and River was "The money was too good." Mal can only assume the money will soon be good enough for him too. Then Jayne flipped the script. For the very first time he showed regret and basically with his dying breath asked Mal to lie to the others so he is not remembered as a traitor to the crew. I feel like that is all Mal needs to give anyone a further chance.

AC10

I didn't know that about the ambulance chopperish thingy. Thanks for sharing. Also... I Thought Those Body Caskets Looked Familiar!!!! Never had one myself but I helped install a few years ago!!! *Also... I myself grew up in my dad's shop turning wrenches and building stuff... Usually from the pieces left after I wrecked other stuff... My whole life revolved around my dad's shop. Learned almost everything important about life there. A a young age to boot. I will always love characters like Kaylee for this reason.... There are so few shows I find with characters I can relate to so strongly right out the gate.

AC10

About the engine thing... Yes. I've been building and repairing engines my entire life. I was born into it. Any mechanical thing has a certain "sound" and "vibration" and even "smell" to it that can tell someone experienced enough everything they need to know about how it's functioning. With my experience if a car engine is overheating, or starving for fuel or air or oil I can usually tell just by standing beside it and observing. Because I have years and years of experience. River is Exceptional!! at this kinda thing.... Even with almost no previous experience. She has been on this ship a while. She knows how the engine sounds and feels when it's operating normally. I imagine as soon as that changed... It would be similar to someone SLAMMING their hand down on a table right next to her. It would be so Obviously LOUD of a change to her that she couldn't help but notice... Immediately!!

AC10

It's ok... I'm obsessed enough with Firefly for the both of us... Hehehe

Shaun Houghton

Still a few rooms in a large hospital in a large city, during a night shift, gives you squat to make any judgements on. The whole Chinese thing is still a ridiculously narrow focus.

DakaraJayne

Same & I think Simon surprised me at how well thought out the entire plan was. Quite impressive. Haha yeah, women can’t have their time of the months AND do a job…way too much for us 😜 I’m defo more of a chocolate gal myself.

Eric Hunter

I am not suggesting that it has to bother you. But in reality, the Earth is roughly 1/3 "Asian", and 1/3 "White". For people who value consistent world-building and representation there should be more "Asians" on the Core Worlds, and therefore in "Ariel".

Ian

Really good episode this Mal is so forgiving the mark of a great captain 👌

Nicholas Corgan

3:20 River after slashing Jayne: “He looks better in red” Jayne’s shirt has the Blue Sun Corporation’s logo on it. If the show continued, this company would have been involved with the experiments on River.
