Hello All!

Really emotional one this episode, Sharing how it all started and how it is now. Serenity is a character within itself and Mal and the crew love it dearly. Not only for the ship getting them from A to B but also bringing everyone on board closer together too.

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

OMG!! You Better Have Rested!!! 😉

DB

Did I just see you sing the intro song despite being sick? Careful, one might think you like it now 😉

AC10

😬😬😬

Michele

I could hardly tell that you were sick. I hope you feel better soon. This is a pretty important episode, in my opinion. I liked getting to know how everyone came together to be on the ship and in the Team. Mal seems pretty good at recognizing potential. And pretty lucky and having these people even come into his life. I'm glad we got to see glimpses of how Mal really feels. He likes having each of them on the ship and in the Team. You could tell. He may seem aloof, but he obviously wants these people around him. May even need them. He knows that he has to be the Bad Guy at times, though. And he's accepted that. So that's why he puts on that aloof persona, I think.

I love shows that do episodes like this. The entire layout/feel is so very different than what we have seen so far. And I Love It!!! So many othe r shows structure every episode the exact same. These episodes that make us feel something completely different while watching I think make the season so much better overall. (When done well of course).

Josee (Griffe)

Inara says she always loved Serinity, and you can clearly see Mal does too. Love at first sight, for the both of them. (for the ship, of course)

Ian

Great episode this it was so great seeing how they became the crew we see today . Special mention to the music in this one it was fantastic 🤩 hope your nose isn't too sore from all the nose blowing dak and you get better very very soon 🫂💙

(speaking about the fire) " Is that how it would travel... Surely not." Well yes and no. Yes if a fire broke out in any spaceship and they vented the sections of the ship with the fire to the vacuum of space Yes it would put out the fire. No it would not look like this.... Except Maybe if the fire was fueled by liquid fuel from the engine compartment... Them maybe. When venting to space the liquid that was fueling it would be sucked out to space but I imagine every step of the way it would dissipate. Meaning the flame ball would start big and get smaller quickly as it moved down the corridor to the open aft door and probably be non existent before it reached the door.. So no it would not look exactly like this "Technically" But it would absolutely put out the fire so I'm ok with it. (I'm a space tech nerd in case you can't tell lol).

DM DC

I wish you well. You look great though. The opening song seems to be really growing on ya hehe. I really like this song. It's great. This episode is such a wonderful episode. It's another favorite of mine. I love seeing how he got the others to be apart of his crew. It's also just a nice look into each character, including Mal. I always liked how he comes across as a sort of father figure to Kaylee. At least that's how I always seen it. But he's always so sweet to Kaylee. It's true he can be a bit of a jerk at times, but he's definitely fair, and loyal to his crew. Great react, sooo looking forward to more! But take some rest and take care.

One thing I love about Mal in this episode (and I honestly can’t remember if this is something I noticed originally, or was pointed out to me), but when the crisis hits he is such a consummate leader, and not only is he a good leader, he morphs his leadership style depending on who he’s interacting with. For instance, in the moment he walks out to the hallway and speaks to Kaylee outside the med bay. He speaks to her in a calm, soft tone, asking her What does she know? what can she do? He encourages her, he says they are going to get out of it, and then he sends her on her way with a mission calmly & supportive like a big brother or father. Then he walks in he sees what’s happening with Zoe and Wash. He knows he needs Wash up on the bridge. He first just tells Wash calmly that he needs him up there and Wash doesn’t respond. He tells him again and Wash by his response clearly is too emotional to think logically. In this moment you can see Mal register this and understand it without judgment. He pauses, breathes and looks down. Then he looks back up and becomes incredibly firm, pulls Wash away, and tells him to get his ass up to the bridge right fucking now and Wash does. When he goes up to the bridge to talk to Wash, he doesn’t start with aggression. All he does is ask if he did what he could but when Wash responds in a way that lets him know that he is probably not actually thinking clearly still, he starts fighting with him and pointing out possibilities of things that Wash could do until they come up with something that Wash realizes in that moment he had been overlooking. There’s just something about Mal in this episode that I think is incredible on every level.

i think this is my favorite episode, and i think it's because everyone is at their most raw and straightforward. mal's softspoken gentle guiding of kaylee is precious, all the first meetings (kaylee is a legend), that jayne even prepared a suit so hopefully mal could survive longer, the fact that that heartwarming "she'll be with you for life" monologue was actually about an entirely different ship. it's all just so sweet. also an interesting point: mal didn't start disrespecting inara and calling her a whore until she said she supported unification; seems to me that it's less her job he has a problem with and more her political views and her job is just a convenient target, at least initially

This episode was written by the amazing Tim Minear, who also wrote Angel S2ep2, "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been", where you get flashbacks of Angel staying in the Hyperion Hotel in the 1950's, and the gang preparing to move into it in the present day. The cutting between distant past, recent past, and the present here echoes what was done in Angel. An important detail in Out of Gas is the lighting. In the present day scenes where Mal is alone and shot, the lighting is cold and blue, in the recent past where the crew is together, the light is warm, and much more normal. The distant past where Mal is first seeing Serenity, and meeting the crew, the light is very warm and golden. It clues you in as to where you are.

Hope you get better. You just need some rest. You look and sound great. Yes fire would behave that way, sort of. Fire is mostly a super just a heated gas that feeds on available oxygen, so when the ship vented atmosphere, the fire followed the oxygen. However, as someone else already posted, the fire would have been getting smaller as it reached space. This episode was very good as it showed how the crew met each other, it also displayed the bond that they all developed.

Polly

I don't understand why Zoe always addresses Mal as 'sir'. He was a NCO when they were in the military together.

Audra Foxgrove

I always assumed it was because of the moment we see him take command in the war flashback at the beginning of the pilot, but I admit to not understanding military stuff very well in the real world, let alone in fiction.

Oliver

Imo it is a sign of respect, also it is in the 26th century! We don't use accolades in the same way as people did in Shakespeare's time. (And we also don't use as many mandarin swear words...) 😉

PlaidGriffin

I don’t believe she called him ‘sir’ in the army flashback when he was a sergeant, but she shows proper respect to her superior - Captain - on Serenity. Any junior officer on any ship would refer to the captain as sir…and Zoe does have deep respect for Mal’s leadership, but as pointed out by Dak, she is open and honest when she disagrees with him, but still shows that respect. Just my take on it.

Brian Dworak

I'm praying you feel better soon, but you look great as always. The opening music made me think I was about to hear: "It's been seven hours and 15 days Since you took your love away" R.I.P. Sinéad O'Connor This is the highest rated episode of Firefly and deservedly so. It's very emotional on several levels and you almost forget to blink. Seeing the flashbacks was fun and interesting (that pornstache was something, eh?) and they did a really good job de-ageing them. Inara looked particularly alluring. Regarding the cancellation of the series for those of us that were fans, yes it was a huge disappointment. Now add in that years later we found out they were aired out of order. Fuming. I always forget Stephen Flynn (Captain Sash) is in this episode. Last thing I saw him in was Bosch: Legacy a couple of years ago. If you haven't watched Bosch it's worth your time, but possibly not for the channel, as I don't know how many people have watched it. Then again, since you do the full episodes that can be their first time watching and hang out with you at the same time. Win-win. The salesman at the end reminded me of Boss Hogg from The Dukes of Hazzard and I always thought that was on purpose. I feel like I'm doing 65 in a 35 zone with how fast these are coming at me. I really hope when you have the slot open you decide to choose Fringe. Thanks Dak!

When he has to pull Wash away from Zoe, you can also see that everyone else in the crew is taken aback a bit, even Jayne. So it is definitely not like he resorts to "hands on" very often. This specific situation just required it.

AC10

OMG... omg omg omg I started my Patreon reaction journey about 2.5 years ago (best decision ever) and this is the 1st EVER mention of The Dukes of Hazzard!!! My life is this much more complete now. Thank you 🙏

AC10

This is interesting. I never noticed this before. Imma have to look back and see when she first called him Sir. If it was as the Captain of the ship then that would make sense.

AC10

Yet another small detail that makes this show so freekin good. Small details like this mean so much to us the viewer... But can cost a lot in production. Someone cared enough to make this happen. And was robbed when the show was cancelled.

AC10

Humm... Never heard this before. See... This is why I love this community so much. I love this show. Re-watched it many times and never saw this. Now imma look for it next time.

AC10

Could not agree more. This is the sign of a "Great Leader". Every person under a leaders command is an individual human. No matter how much training they have when shit hits the fan they will all react a little different. A Great Leader will recognize this and act accordingly.

Polly

She was calling him 'sir' in the Battle of Serenity Valley, and in this episode she was calling him 'sir' before he even bought the Firefly, so, before he was the captain of anything.

Mitch M

Because it's a different army, time, and culture. There's no reason that a rebel force in the far future would use the same rules of the US army from centuries before.

Ms. Chuck Terry

Still my favorite episode. And I’ve seen it a zillion times. Kaylee is what I’d call earthy. She takes pleasure in pleasure. From the strawberry in Ep 1, to the fancy dress and classical music in Ep 4, to a straightforward approach to sex. She’s sweet, but not innocent. She’s the heart of this ship and the heart of this family.
