Hello All!

This one hurt my heart, there was an ache in my chest that lingered. Peter and Elizabeth broke me. I hope they get more time together. Loved the episode, like I always do, even if I feared I was watching the wrong one at the start haha. It all made sense in the end!

Much love

ABSOLUTELY FERAL WITH MY NEED TO HIT PLAY

DB

Redverse let's go!

Mirko Paskota

Apparently, the original idea (at the start of Fringe, they had a clear plan) was for the leader of the 3-strong team in alternate universe to be John Scott. Anna and Mark (who played J Scott) got together between the pilot and season 1, married very quickly, HOWEVER, marriage failed; they separated approx 8 months later and divorced the following year. None of the actors knew the original plans, and the showrunners thought that it may be uncomfortable for Anna to play scenes with Mark, and hence - introducing agent Lincoln Lee...

I can now comment on something I said previously would be a spoiler: remember the episode where Newton takes 3 bits of Walter's brain from brains of 3 people, to connect them to Walter's brain and get the information on HOW to open a door between universes? At the end, he gives Olivia a sequence in which antidotes need to be injected for Walter to survive. He could have easily lied and led to Walter's death. Why didn't he? Walternate wants a revenge on Walter, and simply killing him is not enough. What he needs is for Walter to see with his own eyes that Peter chooses of his own free will to go back to his original universe. (I mean, let's face it, Newton and Walternate could have easily disabled that motel CCTV...)

This is where my colour theory obsession comes in. So in S1 finale there's a shot of Peter driving to the beach house that we see through a red stained glass window. That's establishing Peter's redverse origin. But he's predominantly dressed in blue/cool tones in most of the episodes. And while it could be a wardrobe department's choice for the actor (Josh does look fabulous in blue!), I think it's also on purpose to indicate Peter's allegiance to the blueverse. When Walternate steps into Peter's hotel room in the previous episode, he's literally stepping through a blue door into a room dominated by blue colour - the lamp, that painting of a frozen lake (!) above the bed, Peter clad in blue from head to toe. (Peter wearing blue laying on warm toned covers, like he's supposed to belong but is on the outside instead, clashing with the universe he's supposed to be in - peak cinema, brilliant set dressing, chefs kiss, etc.) And here we have Peter wearing black, an appropriate colour for someone who's mourning a loss of an entire world he thinks he won't ever go back to. And I know it's not an easy feat but I'm gonna play devil's advocate and defend Walternate a bit. I think he's an incredibly bitter man with way too much power who spent 25 years obsessing over a very traumatic event. He is our Walter just with all of his brain intact and no mental institution experience. But I admit it's really tough to empathise with him because we're also confronted with Elizabeth's reaction to Peter. She's so loving and caring. She doesn't vilify her blueverse counterpart instead of opting to actually getting to know her son. Meanwhile Walternate gives him a task to do, one that would turn his lost son into a world destroying weapon. I think his badly processed grief just made him vengeful. Olivia is such a classic beauty as a blond but I find her stunning with dark hair. It's very symbolic - our Olivia wears no make-up make-up, she's very discreet, she tries to blend in as much as possible. Bolivia has a certain edge that she's not afraid to show to the world. She wants to be noticed. Olivia's reflected in blueverse's cool palette. Bolivia is all warm tones of redverse. (Someone correct me but I remember fandom using Bolivia/Fauxlivia as nicknames for her, right?) Oh one last thing - in the S2 premiere Peter was drinking in a bar because Olivia was gone. Here Olivia is doing the same. My little shipper heart can't get enough of such parallels :) ETA: Holy crap, I either have nothing to say or go for ridiculously long comments. Apparently there's no in between lol Sorry!

Love this episode, the way it drops you in at the deep end! We've heard about the alternate universe for some time and now we are here complete with an alive Charlie and a red-headed Olivia. So many great scenes including the reveal that our Olivia has crossed into the Au is WTF, whilst the scenes between Peter & Elizabeth are thoroughly heartbreaking! And then we also get to meet our alternate characters, I bet the actors had a great time acting as there alts!

Gary Marshall

Iirc it started as Bolivia but then changed to Fauxlivia which I liked better.

Oh boy i couldn’t wait for you to react to this one!! My favourite opening scene of any Fringe episodes and your reaction did not disappoint XD, loved the mixture of surprise and disbelief on your face and as the scene went on the fear that you had skipped an episode. That sequence of emotions that everyone who watches the show for the first goes through is what makes it my favourite, after so many episodes of teasing us with the other side and what it looks like and especially what the alternate version of “our” characters look like BAM! They throw us right in the middle of it, no preamble no easing into it just straight up in the middle of the day to day operations of the Fringe division (which is actually named like that on the this side), sooooo good. Now, i could spend the entire comment talking about the little differences between the universes which are so cool and create a fantastic feeling of world building but the comment would be way too long so i will comment only on the major ones and leave it to others to point out the many many little ones in the comments. The major differences are for one obviously the characters, when i watched the show for the first time i also didn’t expect the characters to be so massively different from our own (except for Walter, i figured he would be drastically different because of what happens with Peter) but man especially when it comes to Olivia we are talking almost polar opposites and Anna does such a fantastic job to show us that, from the mannerism to the tone of the voice to the vibe in general, if their faces didn’t look the same you would never guess that she is a variant of our Olivia and i won’t go too deep on the why that is because the show will expand on it very well imo so i’ll leave it at that, i also won’t use the “official”name/nickname that the Fringe fandom uses to identify this version of Olivia because the show hasn’t reveal it yet (unless someone else mentions it in the comments), so in the meantime i’ll just refer to her as Alt-livia. Charlie is back! And with worms/arachnids/something inside him? It’s so good that they brought the actor back because he has such a specific presence that fits the show perfectly, also Broyles and Astrid are here too! Astrid in particular doesn’t seem like our own at all, again with all of this variants i won’t expand too much because of spoilers. Lincoln is our main new character introduction, not much to say about him yet especially since it did not end up well for him, but he isn’t dead it seems, one of the other differences on this side is that medicine seems to be more advanced (Olivia was taking about a nanite regeneration chamber) and it look like he will survive the burns. Ok i said i wouldn’t talk about the difference for too long and i’ve already written half a poem about it, to get back to the actual episode i wanna highlight my two favourite scenes, the first is the encounter between Peter and Elizabeth, so emotional and so good, i liked your analysis of their conversation a lot and i think you were on point, the second is the conversation between Walter and the cortexiphan subjects and in general all of his interactions with them, it’s such a great microcosm of how much Walter has changed and how much regret and guilt he has about the way he treated them, just so so good. I won’t go too deep on Walternate because there is going to be a lot to talk about him and Alt-livia in the next episode so i’ll reserve it for that comment section tomorrow. Loved your reaction as always, especially on this first scene XD. P.S. I do have to say one thing that i was never thrilled about is the fact they reintroduced the cortexiphan subjects and in the same episode the kill all of them, i do see what they were trying to do especially considering Walter’s words “this is the day for which you were created” so after they fulfill their “destiny” they get killed, almost like soldiers in a war between universes (like it was mentioned in the ZFT) and that for sure makes them tragic characters but i do feel like they were partly wasted and that they could have done more with them. P.S.S. With all of the stuff there is to talk about i almost forgot to mention the introduction of the supposedly world ending machine and the fact that Peter seems to be the one to use it and also that the observers did not want Peter to go back to the other side under any circumstances, mmm…. well i won’t comment on any of that sorry you’re gonna have to find out on your own. XD

christian chirico

Love all of the color stuff you mentioned, it’s something that i had noticed in my rewatches, especially the one in the season 1 finale with the glass but i hadn’t noticed all of the stuff with the clothes, great insight! Gosh i love discovering/uncovering new things about this this show with each rewatch or reaction.

Mirko Paskota

So, Walternate is quite happy to sacrifice his own son in order to destroy our world. Revenge at all costs!

FedeM

The way you described our Olivia compared to her alternate version GAVE ME CHILLS, Dak! you are so on point all the time! A few extra random thoughts: 1. Nick is definitely hot, I've been shamelessly thirsting on him since this show first aired. Sorry to see him go 2. I feel you there... what I wouldn't give to hug my mom again (even her alternate version). The whole scene hits me every time because of Joshua's acting. He looks like he cannot believe his eyes and just wants to run to her 3. Idc it's his aternate version - having Charlie again in any form on our screen is a privilege 4. Loved your reaction and cannot wait for the next!!

DB

Love that P.S.! It touches on an issue I had earlier in S2. The narrative that 1. these people are disposable and only serve one purpose, and 2. that their trauma made them special thus absolving Walter. It makes me really uncomfortable to hear that.

christian chirico

Yeah i have to agree, like i said i think they were mostly going for the tragic route of them paying once again for the consequences of other people’s actions and it sort of works but i do feel like they didn’t fully earn it and i was also i little bit uncomfortable with the way they all seemed to be mostly fine with Walter considering what was done to them, it felt like the show was really pushing us to absolve him which is weird because i do think that overall the show does a good enough job of condemning Walter’s actions and showing us the consequences of them while still making us feel empathetic towards him because he is trying to atone he has also been “punished” for them, but in this specific case i don’t think they managed it fully and it just ends up feeling partly incomplete. Also yes Nick’s line to Walter about “making them special” is very borderline, again i get what they were going for but they were a little too messy in terms of writing.

Katie

I haven't seen anyone else comment on this so I'm just adding some differences in the redverse that you might not have noticed or just find interesting from this episode: - Their Statue of Liberty is still copper-coloured. This is likely because they have the technology to combat oxidation. - The states in America are different. Texas is split into North and South, there is just one Dakota, Kansas and Oklahoma are merged, and half of California is gone. Hawaii and Alaska aren't US states. - The West Wing is on season 11 but here it ended on season 7 (love that show!!!) - Cabbage Patch dolls as still really popular for some reason. I might keep looking for all these differences going forward cause I've never researched it before to see what I've missed on a rewatch.

Neumann

Gd I also love color theory in media but it’s often not as intentional and present as it is in fringe. I also love when wardrobe is intentional and just ugh, perfection! God this show is so good

Neumann

Me: *loves the post episode discussions* Also me, forgetting we’re not actually watching together: ENOUGH TALK, NEXT EPISODE! Lol

Gary Marshall

tt's all these small changes that help sell this alternate universe like the Martin Luther King Jr $20 bills and the silver dollar coin with Richard Nixon's face on, which either means that Watergate didn't take place or that no one found out about it!

Katie

My headcanon is that no one found out about it
